Sure, I'm not jumping on board with some movement just because of this. It's just my own personal feelings. I get that it's an extremely rare occurrence. Then again people obsess over things that are also extremely rare occurrences statistically all the time.

Is it really that much easier and cheaper to use real guns, though? I'd imagine there are licenses, clearances, insurance costs, the need for (paid) people on set whose specific job it is to maintain and check them constantly, and additional safety protocols and training for everyone involved with actually firing them on set.

And #AlecForPrison is trending on twitter. People just jump all over everything and jump to conclusions w/o checking into and assessing the facts. Someone may befacing jail time for this (the person who was in charge of setting up the prop gun and doing a safety check most likely), but it won't be Baldwin.

I'm also find it strange that they would still be using potentially dangerous props with all they can do with computers and CGI nowadays.

Sorry (not really) to interrupt the string of serious posts but I just watched the Honest Trailer for LeBron's Space Jam, thought it was hilarious and had to share it.

Everyone wants Baldwin to go to jail even though it's came out about the crew yelling "cold gun" before the accident took place. There's also a report about how there were constant misfires and people were worried about gun safety. That accident is 100% on the prop department.

            Someone ****ed up, royally.

By now everyone must be buttressing their positions. I'm sure there is a protocol for how guns are supposed to be handled in US based productions (union rules, regulations). Was protocol followed? Can't be, because we ended with a live round in the chamber. Then who broke protocol?

Union people working on set have their union lawyers, that assistant director that yelled "cold gun" has, I don't know if assistant directors have a union, so I don't who he has. And then there is Alec Baldwin.

Cool. Let’s continue to just make assumptions.

And here I thought I was restraining myself (which I did). Talked about how it is safe to use real guns in movies if protocols are followed. Said someone ****ed up, ok that's kind of an assumption. Then about how everyone must lawyering up, which is just smart in any situation of this kind.

Yup, pretty restrained from where I'm standing. Unless you don't want people talking about the situation at all in which case why have a forum at all?

See, if I wanted to throw "assumptions" around and be irresponsible I would talk about the rumor going around that this might be part of a union negotiation gone wrong. This movie is a extremely low-budget indie production in which apparently they used some non-union crew and rumors flying around are that maybe one of the union-crew people loaded the gun so that it fired and damaged some of the equipment to make a point about hiring non-union people. That's the same contract negotiation that reached a tentative agreement this/last week. Apparently things didn't went as planned, of course.

So yeah, if I really wanted to go all the way I could, but I didn't. But now I guess I did.

                Re: Off-Topic

IN THIS INSTANCE, WERE BLANKS FIRED?

The gun was loaded with live rounds, court records released Friday show. According to the records, the gun was one of three that the film’s armorer had set on a cart outside the wooden structure where a scene was being acted. Assistant director Dave Halls grabbed the gun from the cart and brought it inside to Baldwin, unaware that it was loaded with live rounds, a detective wrote in the search warrant application.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WEAPONS ON SET?

Generally, a weapons master or armorer oversees all weapons that are used on a production. This can mean anything from selecting the correct items for a certain period in history, to taking care of the weapons on set and making sure they are being used safely and properly by actors and stuntpeople. It’s a fairly new position in the history of film production, going back only to the 1980s. Before that, the prop master handled everything. Recently, it’s become more common to enlist specialists.

                ..............................................

WHY WOULD THE GUN HAVE BEEN POINTING AT THE CINEMATOGRAPHER?

We don’t know what happened on the set of “Rust,” but it is fairly common to have a gun pointed at the camera, and by extension the cinematographer, to get a certain angle.

“We’ve all seen the very famous shots in films where you get that dramatic effect of a gun being pointed at you, the audience, and of course, it’s being pointed towards the camera,” explained Steven Hall, a veteran second unit director and cinematographer who has worked on films like “Fury” and “Thor: The Dark World.” “To minimize that, one would put a remote camera in that place, or at least if someone does have to operate the camera, I’m normally protected by safety goggles, a safety visor and often a PERSPEX screen that withstands pretty much anything. Obviously, it wouldn’t withstand a real shot from a gun, but it would certainly withstand a blank.”

                ..................................................

WHY DO PRODUCTIONS EVEN USE REAL GUNFIRE WHEN SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE AVAILABLE?

It is becoming more common to add in gunfire in post-production when working on the visual effects. But visual effects can be expensive and it can be easier, and cheaper, to use props. Also, Dormer says that there can be advantages to using props and blanks, like getting an authentic reaction from an actor.

This was a life altering accident on many levels. All I'm suggesting is maybe understanding how this happened before we start taking judgment.

Why there is a live gun on set is clearly hard to understand and there was likely negligence but we don't know that yet. If you know who to point the finger at for sure, let us know.

What is the reason for having live ammunition at a production? Shouldn’t all ammo be blanks when you’re making a movie?

I understand the costs argument for not wanting to add special effects in place of blanks, but I can’t figure out why you have live ammo mixed around blanks and it’s not completely and totally separated, leaving no room for a mix-up and an accident like this.

From what I’ve seen there’s been a lot of confusion because on set in movie parlance, blanks are considered live rounds because there should never actually be real bullets on set.

That whole thing is just awful. I am by no means an Alec Baldwin fan, but I feel really bad for him. I was reading where the armorer for this movie is like 24 years old and was on a podcast saying she almost didn't take her last job because she wasn't sure if she was ready.
