This is a really important part of your story that you omitted from you first post.

There are buildings here where if you miss the elevator down, you could possibly have to wait at least another 5 minutes to catch another one. If someone has a bus to catch, that can make a huge difference.

You should have at least let the person know why you were closing the door.

You can see which floors are pressed beforehand so you know if people are getting off before it stops, and also seeing which floor those people press when they get on.

To be fair, the door close button was pressed before anyone on that floor was even visible.

        That doesn't change anything.

The right thing to do would be to just tell the person the elevator was full.

I do agree with Dub though, there isn't a way to predict how the other person will react. Just feels wrong to me to just close the door on someone.

Right. I just had a funny visual in my head of you closing the door on the person outside and someone inside just being like "...hey, wtf?" if they were about to get off.

              Re: Off-Topic

The elevator question is really going to divide people based on those who are really concerned with COVID and those who aren't. I'm in the latter category and wouldn't care if the elevator was jam packed. On a more general level, I'm the sort of person who assesses the reasonableness of "rules" on a case by case basis and acts according to what I think best (with the possible "punishments" in mind of course). I think at least half of people are in this group.

Even if you're all about the COVID rules (which I follow because they generally don't bother me that much anyway), you've got to consider the fact that each establishment is making up rules as they go and most of them can be "broken" a moderate amount without it really making a discernible distance. For example...is 4 people on the elevator really that different than 3? Are the 3 people on there even 6 feet apart to begin with? Does any of it even matter for a 10 second elevator ride? I, myself, think not.

Another example is at the grocery store, they have the one-way aisles. Nobody follows this anymore. I try to, but sometimes break it because, c'mon. It makes no difference.

Anyway, came in here to post something else. What do you guys think of Biden potentially cancelling a particular amount of federal student loans? I'm torn on it. My main hesitance is that it's very unfair to the people who paid their student loans over the past 10-20 years and won't get anything from it. They should get a mortgage credit up to the full per-person amount of loan forgiveness, but this will never happen because they'll have a hard enough time getting enough Republicans to support the $10K/person forgiveness.

I still have roughly $10K of federal loans myself at the moment, so I would benefit, but I just wish they would decide something sooner rather than later. I'm obviously not going to pay them during this national forbearance period if they end up going away.

It's a good thing for others, so I'm 100% fine with it. I don't get upset about others receiving assistance. Even if I had to pay back my loans.

The "I struggled so others have to struggle too" mindset is complete garbage IMO.

That's not really what I find unfair, it's more about two people who have similar debt and income levels, and one of them is very financially disciplined and makes some sacrifices to make their payments, while the other person spends on unnecessary luxuries and somehow thinks they can't manage to make their payments.

I have a friend with similar debt and income to me, and she thinks she'll never have her loans paid off. Meanwhile though, she takes expensive dance classes, goes on international vacations, etc. I wouldn't judge people for this unless and until the government cancels person B's loans while person A, who was more financially responsible and paid their loans off, gets nothing. That I have a problem with (at least for this sort of scenario). Person A should get a mortgage or tax credit.

                      I like your idea too.

I won’t really get into the discussion about what others do with their money.

Ideally, though, massive debt for going to college is not created in the first place. The amount of money that would be required for this kind of program is a routine budget adjustment for some government departments. The money is there, but cutting things like defense budget even a little is a big political no-no, due to several factors that we probably shouldn’t get into.

Yea, I won't go too deep into it myself but given where we are currently, I would start with finding a way fund interest free loans. That would have to be through the government though so that hits in other areas as well but interest is the main killer in the student loans.
