If any of you have ever moved long distance before, did you do a short term rental first or did you somehow buy a house sight unseen?

Re: Off-Topic
I've done about 4 long-distance moves (cross-country), and I always rented first before buying - and in 3/4 cases, I never ended up buying at all (which was a good thing). Unless you're already pretty familiar with the area or have a good idea of where you want to be, my personal opinion would be to never rush into buying a house.Comment

Re: Off-Topic
Ever have something happen in front of you, or see something happen that you don't register the gravity of until later?
Was on I-95 and while I didn't see it happen, went past an accident in another lane where a Jeep was flipped and the front end of a van was totaled. Thankfully the people involved seemed to be alright, standing around waiting for the police/EMTs. Only a bit down the road did it hit me how bad that accident actually was, if that makes sense.Last edited by LambertandHam; 06-08-2021, 07:44 AM.Comment

he wasn't seemingly too terribly injured but the boss called an ambulance to be safe and told him not to get up till the paramedic arrived. an hour goes by and the ambulance still hasn't gotten there, so we call again. finally after almost an hour and a half later an ambulance gets on scene. they take the guy off to be x-rayed out an abundance of caution.
fast-forward the next day, the guy is completely alright and back to work even, but the reason the ambulance was delayed, it was actually a second ambulance that finally made it to our work the previous day. the first ambulance got into a wreck less than a mile from our plant and one of the paramedics was killed in the wreck. young guy in his twenties.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: Off-Topic
Yikes to the above story. Terrible.
I was playing golf one time and a medivac helicopter happened to be flying overhead. For whatever reason, I happened to point it out to my pops (just a mundane "oh look, a medivac flight") right as it was flying over us, and literally as I was pointing it out, the back end of the helicopter went "BOOM" and the back tail rotor splintered and started falling to the ground. It took a while for it to register what happened - it took a second to realize that anything was even abnormal, to be honest - and then we all came to our senses and ran for cover under the trees. We were playing with a young couple and part of the tail blade came down and stuck right into the ground in the middle of the fairway about 50 yards or so away from them (insert joke here about how it's a good thing it hit there, as no one is ever in the middle of the fairway). That would have been really, really ugly if it hit someone, though....
After we all came out of our collective stupors, we ran over to the other parts of the course where we saw/heard debris fall and golfers all over were pointing out debris. A huge part of the engine block landed on a tree, and split the tree clear in half. Astoundingly, no one was hurt on the course and all the debris landed away from people. Thank heavens for that.
I think I read later that the medivac flight actually crashed and there were fatalities - which I suppose isn't surprising, but at the time it happened, the helicopter seemed to just continue in a straight line flight as if nothing happened (which is probably one of the reasons we didn't react initially).
To this day, it's the most surreal thing that's ever happened to me. This was way before cell phones and everyone having pocket camcorders, otherwise that would have been a million-hit YouTube video. I sometimes think back on that and wonder, "did that really happen?". But it did. Crazy.Comment

Re: Off-Topic
Apparently tonight is one of if not the biggest lottery in Canada ever. It's no Powerball jackpot, but any lottery win is a lottery win.
Obviously like most, I'm in the "It doesn't need to be the jackpot, the secondary prize would have me set for life too" crowd, so here's hoping [emoji1696].
Although, if I do win the Jackpot, OS would be set for life too, and someone here may or may not win a PS5, just putting it out there...Comment

the odds of finding a ps5 are on par w/a lottery win
if I won say, $300 million in a lottery I think I'd bankroll a developer to custom-make the baseball video game I want.
incidentally, since Alabama is one of 4 or 5 states to not have a lottery, I drive 65 miles over to Georgia once a month to get a month's worth of drawings for myself and 9 other co-workers. we all go $20 in which is like $4 a week for all of us. the odds of winning maybe almost non-existant but those odds are a lot better than winning by not playing lol
with my luck, if I ever hit the lottery, I'd probably be 90 years oldLast edited by Caulfield; 06-08-2021, 07:29 PM.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

these two items are appropriately coupled:

I know people say money changes you, but I feel like I'd just live a similar life, except with more money and more free time/no job.
I'm still not gonna go and dine out at some restaurant where a starter salad/soup starts at $30, or (when able to) fly around the world.
The most expensive purchase minus a house would probably be season tickets.Comment
