From today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel USA Health Section of Coronavirus

Can UV radiation from the sun kill the virus?

Experts have advised against using concentrated UV light to prevent or treat the coronavirus and do not recommend going in the sunlight to kill the virus. Only levels of concentration of UV light much higher than what is found in sunlight can kill viruses, experts note, and the levels that are able to kill viruses can irritate human skin and should be avoided.

Neither sunlight nor UV light is listed as a preventive measure by theWorld Health Organization or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I read briefly today that Dr. Fauci could see sports leagues re-starting in some capacity without in-person fan attendance and also with heavy duty testing (weekly testing) of the players. I didn't see the whole interview so I'm not sure if that's taking the good Doc out of context, but perhaps a good sign? Seems to give some legs to the MLB rumors we'd been hearing about previously.

Nothing different from isolate the players in a hotel and play in empty stadiums. As long as all employees, bus drivers, hotel staff, etc are isolated and tested, there isn't any reason to stop them.

Basically the same as you not coming in contact with anyone while isolating at home. You just have to control the people the players come in contact with and test everyone.

It just costs a lot of money and players' union may say no to it.

That **** won’t work and it won’t be that simple either.

Speaking in regards to the NBA, can’t speak to MLB.

I'm assuming this would only be able to happen after tests are made widely available to everyone. I can't really get on the "restart the sports entertainment economy" wagon if we're giving preferential treatment of testing (and on a regular basis at that) to athletes for the sake of bringing sports back.

That's a fair point. But, as a cynical counterpoint, we've also seen that certain privileged classes of people will have more access to testing anyway, so we might as well have sports as part of the deal. I agree that it wouldn't be right to take tests out of Joe Schmoe's hands to put it into John Q. Athlete's hands.

Not sure I would have gone with John Q as the stand-in for the athletes in this scenario, but I understand your point.

The other problem is, with 20-30 million unemployed, and no one knowing how long this will last, I don’t think there is going to be much revenue for them to generate. Lack of advertising is killing off small newspapers, and I don’t think MLB and the networks will find much more.

Think about this. According to epidemiologists, 90% of the COVID-19 deaths in America so far might have been prevented if social distancing policies had been put into effect two weeks earlier. And 60% if just one week earlier.

                  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/14/o...e=articleShare

And if we come back to soon, take the wrong chances, it we will be back right here. And, that will drain more money from the economy.

I saw, I think Dr. Gottlieb on Face the Nation, but it might have been another of the doctors we see on TV a lot, say that one myth is that 30-40% of us will have antibodies. He said it is more like 2-3%. We are all going to need vaccines, and and it is still very unclear if there is a real immunity or not.

So WWE in Florida and MLB in the desert are, right now, way bigger threats to our health than the money they can generate, in my opinion.

That is a fantasy world. How many players and staff are you trusting to not break quarantine, and for how long?

It’s really the height of stupidity that MLB has let the discussion go this far. Their plan is to isolate every single player from their family for months on end. That is just flat out dumb.

This is a plot from a horror or disaster flick.

And I can’t even imagine how expensive. But I guess disposable income is about to break wide open, right?

A lot of speculation in numbers like this. I’m sure some other source could make “models” say the exact opposite.

How will they break quarantine if they are all isolated in a hotel? Staff and players all travel most of the year, it's less actual travel for the teams, they just won't be able to go home. It's easy to lock down a few hotels and no one having cars to go anywhere makes it even easier.

Hotel staff aren't working and generally don't make much. You offer the ones who want to work to stay onsite and pay them for 24hrs/7 days for all summer. It's a good deal for a lot of people.

Obviously you wouldn't do it, but it's up to the league to determine if they want to pay the money required to keep people quarantined and the players unions to decide if they want to support it or not. The MLBPA is probably the most open to it as they do it already every spring and most of them grew up doing the same thing in travel leagues.

Whichever league acts first is going to have all eyes on them on TV. Most shows couldn't complete filming for this season, so stuff was put on hold to leave episodes for May. Unless summer shows were already shot, they won't be broadcast. That is going to leave the normally travel heavy summer with people at home with nothing to watch. Being the only thing on will increase as revenue from $0 and may grow the fanbase.

They aren't going to do this because they just want sports to be played, they will do it because they are losing a lot of money right now and increasing expenses on people while lowering the cost for flying will probably not cost them much overall. They will obviously lose ticket revenue, but that is already gone for the year.

                          From the article:

There is no need to rely on the hypothetical calculations that we have described. The recent divergence of epidemics in Kentucky and Tennessee shows that even a few days’ difference in action can have a big effect. Kentucky’s social distancing measure was issued March 26; Tennessee waited until the last minute of March 31. As Kentucky moved to full statewide measures in reducing infection growth, Tennessee was usually less than a week behind. But as of Friday, the result was stark: Kentucky had 1,693 confirmed cases (379 per million population); Tennessee had 4,862 (712 per million).

I doubt any model will show that social distancing would increase death rates, or allowing people to interact as they were would decrease death rates.

I don’t know if my business is going to survive. Almost all reservations have been cancelled up to November.

We were doing fantastic and making money, now I have no idea what to do of if I should move my family to the states. And if I can even get a job there with the economy up in the air.
