Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Not counting 06-07 season, last time Juventus finished below Torino was 90-91 season.
So close, and the board only gave me 4M for transfers and my depth is weak so I'll probably have to rely on loans. I could just sell Belotti but he's the main reason why I picked Torino.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
So, i finally picked up FM18. Was on sale für only 18€ and i thought i'd give it a try. I never player Football Manager before, Only the demos. And i barely even touched them, because there was so much stuff going on, i simply couldn't handle it. I only played the FIFA Manager from EA Sports and Bright Future for many, many years. That game was more simplistic and easier to pick up, hence why i probably was always overchallenged with the Football Manager from SEGA.
Finished my first season a couple of days ago. Playing with Schalke. Became 5th, which may sound good, but i feel we are definitely worse than the table shows. I think i lost 13 or 14 times, won 15 and drew the rest. Basically a rolllercoaster-ride; and i had to let the save rest when i lost a game i felt like a should'nt lose and i almost quit the game entirely a couple of times. But i always came back and somehow finished the season.
I really like the game, but i also hate it at the same time. I just feel so overwhelmed with everything. There is so much to do and so much to adjust with tactics and all that. When i lose, i feel so defeated. You spend all that time working out the perfect tactic. It works at first, but then you suddenly lose 0:3 to a poor mid-table team and ask yourself, why that just happened. Most of the time i don't know why. I almost decided to just download an OP tactic and just let it roll - but then, where is the fun in that?
I don't know if some of you feels like i do sometimes. It's weird.Comment

That being said, there's also now data analysts where you can see where your team got beaten or broken down, and if you're into that sort of data you normally look at fixing it, or just understanding that your box-to-box midfielder decided to be a stay-in-the-centre-circle midfielder that day.
Also note, in no way are you required to do everything that the game allows you to do, most modern day managers don't. My assistant manager takes care of most training, and nearly all of the press conferences(mostly because I'm tired of them).
Finally, speaking as someone who has done a lot of it this year, don't be afraid to fail. Not everything is gonna work, sometimes the best laid plans come unraveled unexpectedly, and in the game such as life, the rug can be pulled from under you quite quickly.Support Local Sports

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
One thing I wished we had the option to do was instead of creating a character, we could use an existing manager as our avatar in the game world.
It kills a bit of the immersion for me if I want to do a specific team save and the current manager gets fired.

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
First thing is first, and it took me FM12 and FM13 to get it through my thick skull - there is no such thing as a perfect tactic(unless you are using ones that exploit the match engine), beyond that over the course of time, you're gonna lose a lot to teams you should never lose to. In one of my title winning seasons with Arsenal, my two losses came to 19th placed West Brom and 18th placed Crystal Palace. My 80 game without a loss streak came to a close against a recently promoted, soon to be relegated with only one win(against me) Fremad Amager team. It's frustrating for sure, but sometimes you just shrug your shoulders and move on.

Thanks for the heads up!
I know that it's a learning process, but it's still so frustrating to work out a tactic for a long time, thinking it would perfectly work, just to lose in devastating fashion. Sometimes i motivates me to figure out what went wrong and how it went wrong, but unfortunately, most of the time, it drags me down and i don't touch the game until like the next day. Maybe i get so angry because Schalke is the team i support and i obviously share a strong bond with this club. Nevertheless, i'm gonna look into the data analyst a bit more and see if i can figure something out during my second season. One thing i saw already was that my assistant coach and my fitness coach were not up to par with the rest of the Bundesliga. So i got rid of both of them and brought in better replacements and i hope it will have a positive effect on the players and the results.
I hope you guys don't mind me if i ask a couple of beginner questions over the time being. I try to figure out the most to myself, but that's just a small chunk of the whole.
First question is for player roles: i see a lot of videos, where in some formations a player does not play in the role that fits him the best. Let's say there is a striker whose best role is to be a defensive striker (all green). But in that certain formation he gets used as a false nine (red). I understand that i don't need the player to have it full green, but i don't understand why it is okay to let the player play in a role that he doesn't like to play or doesn't understand how to play. Would i not create a formation and tactic where everyone tries to play their role that they are best suited for? How much difference does it make? What affect does it have on his performance?Comment

Regarding player roles, I rarely pay attention to what the game believes is their best role. I've seen players do well in roles they shouldn't and others who were poor in a role they should be good at(according to the game).
It's going to come down to how that player and the role fit into your tactic. For me, as long as the player is competent at a given position, he can fill any role(whether he's effective, is another story). If you look at a player's attributes and you have a feeling he'd be good in a certain role, just give it a try. Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
The biggest difference between this and last season was the EL. This led to more injuries, to the point where I was limping to the finish line.
The same issue is there as last time, I just don't see a path with Ingolstadt to the top. I'm slowly upgrading the facilities, and got a stadium addition approved, but at the end of the day, Ingolstadt is a small market team. I applied to jobs at Gladbach, Inter and Schalke, but got turned down. My guess it is the reputation. I might come back to this save eventually, but I think I'll try something else first.Last edited by rdnk; 07-07-2018, 03:17 PM.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
First Premier League season is in the books, and thankfully we finished 13th and are staying up.
-Made another dream run in the FA Cup, this time making it to the semifinal in which I lost to West Ham. I've been getting some insanely lucky FA Cup draws.
-Ben Brereton won the European Golden Boy award and scored 18 league goals. I'd really like to hang onto him but I'm afraid a bigger club is going to take him. His value is up to $30M right now.
-I signed some random 17 year old striker, Mohamed Hamdy, from an Egyptian league side in January and I think he's going to be a monster. He already has 28 senior caps for Egypt with 20 goals, including I think 6 in the Africa Cup of Nations.
-Liverpool got Kasper Dolberg and he is a goal scoring robot. Chelsea won the league by 1 point over United and lost the Champions League final to Atletico. City righted the ship with Ancelotti and snuck into 4th.Attached FilesLast edited by BunnyHardaway; 07-07-2018, 10:12 PM.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Finished my first season with Sampdoria in Italy, and things went much better than expected!
We were predicted by the media to finish 12th, so a Europa League spot was a great result! It's a good thing too, because the financial situation at the club is NOT great. The club had fallen on hard times in the last few years (maybe why the job was open!), finishing 14th, 16th, and 16th.
I shook things up a bit when I came in before the season, selling a few players, and buying a couple more. But, my entire midfield is on loan, and are going to have to go back to their parent clubs this summer. I will have to replace those guys, which will be interesting.
This season was pretty fun though, here was my form after the new year:
15 match unbeaten streak! Before that run I was hanging around mid-table, but towards the end of this run, I pushed myself into a Europa League spot, and was able to retain it.
I actually went back through my career and looked to see if I have had a run better than this, and I haven't. My previous best unbeaten run was 10 matches with Platanias last year.
I checked back in on my previous club, because I always like to think that I left the club in a better place than I found it, and they've continued the good work I did there, Platanias once again qualified for the Europa League! Many of the players I brought there were integral to their success, so it will be interesting if I get drawn against them in the EL with Sampdoria!University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

Also, I love some of the stuff that happens in long term saves. I want to live in this timeline.
