It’s unacceptable, but it’s clear that reputations dictate so much. Whether it’s a player who is seen to get booked often not getting any leeway, or a player that is seen as going down easy not getting calls when they’re fouled, I truly think certain players get away with clear fouls because they have a reputation of fouling as part of their natural game.

Example: Xhaka quickly got a reputation for being clumsy and a card magnet, which often means he’ll be booked far earlier than other players who have committed the same fouls s

Fernandinho is the opposite. He’s built a reputation as a player who fouls, but if every time he fouls play is stopped he’d be booked constantly. So, they just don’t book him.

Does that make sense? He’s literally allowed to get away with more because it’s accepted that it’s just what he does.

Basically, English officials rely heavily on reputation or perceived reputation.

If Sheff Utd lose they are officially relegated on the same day Norwich are promoted.

I understand a "cup keeper" but only if the keeper is good enough. I just don't think Steffen is a good enough keeper for Man City at this stage in his career. I remember when Poch benched Vorm for Lloris in a semi-final and some of the fans were split on it but at the end of the day, I would rather play the best XI if available and try winning when you're that close to the final.

If Arsenal win, I think the relegation battle is over. Fulham cannot afford to drop any points after Newcastle's win.

Absolutely, especially with Fulham having already played a game more than Burnley and Brighton. They have faltered at the wrong time. After winning at Anfield it looked like they could actually do it. 4 losses on the spin since.

As usual, when an official feels like intervening and feels like making an impact, they do.

VAR in England is 100% down to how someone is feeling that day. Do they feel like taking a closer look, or can they not be bothered?

I haven't been watching nearly as many matches the last month, and honestly, nonsense like that is part of it. They're just stripping the life out of the game. Ugh.

Offside before the penalty? Penalty given for Fulham.

As much as I loathe Fulham and their entire pointless existence, I honestly do not care about this game.

There are only two matches left in Arsenal's season—possibly three depending on how those to go.

Like most bad things in recent times, I 100% blame VAR on the media. If the media didn't focus on every bad call or 50/50 call so hard the last few seasons before VAR was put in, I don't think we would have VAR now.

I remember the year before VAR, every podcast or radio show you listened to only talked about "X was an inch offside, VAR would correct that" instead of talking about the other 89 minutes of the game. That became the main focus and now look where we are two years later? Still talking about "X being inches offside"

Go back to when the game was "simple" and let us enjoy it.

/rant over... rant also can be carried over to the MLB!

To me it's all about discussing what happened in a match versus why it happened, because discussing what happened is easy and anyone can do it. Same reason I hate the idea of "the only thing that matters is the scoreboard durrr" because it essentially dismisses nuance and discussion about why and how and instead only focuses on what.

It's why certain podcasts and pundits, to me, are pointless. They're nothing but match reports discussing what happened and what people think of it, instead of discussing why things happened, how they happened, etc.

One of the reasons I enjoy The Athletic—they don't do match reports, but instead dive further in-depth. Also why I listen to certain podcasts over others and why essentially all post-match punditry is garbage.

As for MLB, yes. Although, my viewing break from the EPL especially has basically been watching baseball and even their replays are refreshing compared to VAR.
