if he plays well at Everton, don't be surprised if he transfers after the World Cup.follow me on twitter: www.twitter.com/eton_riflesComment

Re: The Transfer Thread
Galaxy won't let him transfer permanently. His new contract states that he's free to seek short term loans only.Comment

Re: The Transfer Thread
I hope to God that if Donovan excels at Everton for a month. He doesn't go back to LA saying some crap like he has accomplished something overseas. If Landon is to ever be taken seriously he is going to have to prove himself in Europe for more than a couple of months."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. If you pay any attention at all to US Soccer/MLS, you should know by now that that is not Donovan's character AT ALL.Comment

Re: The Transfer Thread
All I'm saying is that if he is ever to be taken seriously by most Football fans outside of the U.S. he is going to have to play overseas. That's about all there is to it."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: The Transfer Thread
His two stints with Bayer, yes. That horrific performance in a Champions League game against Liverpool right before he jetted back to MLS' cozy confines a second time particularly resonates.
But to be fair, I wouldn't lump his time with Bayern last year in the same 'flop' category. The deck was hopelessly stacked against him. He was brought in at Klinsmann's behest, but the Bayern board wanted nothing to do with him, and acted accordingly: the same week Donovan began training in Munich, Bayern announced that they had just signed Ivica Olic from Hamburg and thus had no interest in purchasing any further attacking players. So Landon arrived only to be told, in essence, that there's no way in hell you're getting bought, and, frankly, we have no real incentive to give you much playing time or any sort of chance to make an impression. Most of the fragmented accounts of how he performed in training were generally positive, actually. He just got little-to-no time on the pitch when it counted, for reasons that had little to do with skill or performance.
As for how the loan to Everton will work out, I think Landon's in a vastly better position than he was last year to turn the stint into something positive. For one, he's not as desperate to get out of the LA zoo, since the situation with the Gals has stabilized dramatically. He's also signed a nice extension with the club, and, on a personal level, has had time to cope with his marital issues. This is me reading into things a bit, but I get the impression his desperate desire to go to Europe last winter was motivated partly by the marital stuff, a la Thierry Henry's move away from 'Merry' ol' England to Barcelona (bonus points if you catch the pun).
In sum, Landon's going to have two prominent chances to put himself in the shop window over the next 6+ months and, if things go well, I could easily see him moving on somewhere permanently following the World Cup. He has much more leverage and control of his own situation now than he did 12 months ago, and I think that makes this flirtation with Europe more likely to be successful.Comment

Re: The Transfer Thread
^connoll, that's a pretty good assessment. For my greedy self sake, I hope he doesn't do too well overseas...... At least not before he gives the LA Galaxy another MLS Cup.
On another note, most people don't dig the MLS but here in LA its a pretty big deal. We had the 2nd highest attendance last season and outdrew many MLB and NBA teams on a per game avg. The MLS also outdraws many of the "big" leagues overseas as well. So its looking good for soccer in the US. Hopefully that is a reason that Donovan signed a 4 year deal to stay here.Comment
