Oilers' Defense, Goaltending Keeping Them In
EDMONTON, AB -- Despite scoring just 47 goals this season, 2nd worst in the NHL, The Oilers seem to be on point. Their 2.24 goals per game is trailed only by the 4-16-1-0 Columbus Blue Jackets and tied with the 4-12-2-0 Anaheim Ducks. However, Nikolai Khabibulin and his defense have kept them from slipping to under .500, allowing only 49 goals this year, 3rd best in the NHL. Their GAPG is lead only by the Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, and the Washington Capitals. A great story so far this season has been the offensive production of rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. In his first 21 NHL games, Nugent-Hopkins has scored 8 goals and helped on 3 others for a total of 11 points, tied for the team lead with captain Shawn Horcoff. Sadly, their highest paid player in Ryan Smyth, who is making a whopping $6.7MM this year, has scored just 5 points so far. He is on pace for a measly 19 points this year, which is $3.16MM per point. At this stage in his career with a contract expiring at the end of the season, he is most likely a trade deadline candidate, whether or not he can improve his production. He started the season out on the first line and has since been demoted to the third line.
