Yeah, the passing game in APF and even the older ESPN titles were very good. In fact, its the very first thing you notice when you play the game. It makes playing QB very rewarding and fun. I hope an EA rep can comment on this.

This style of passing is another piece to the large puzzle of making Madden more like real football.

In madden, a timing pattern is simply called an interception.

Re: Will Madden 10 Support Route Based Passing / Timed Passing Patterns

They said in a NCAA blog that their is finally a pocket, so maybe they are addressing the passing mechanics as well. The timed passing in APF2K8 is what makes it so fun, that and you can actually read players body movement (which you can't in Madden).

For example, if you have a guy making a slant to the left, and you see a defender running right, you should be able to throw the ball for a clean completion, but what you'll see in Madden '09 is the defender that is running in a completely different direction, stop after he passes the receiver, jump up in the air, magically slide the opposite direction back towards the receiver, and make an interception. It's completely inhuman, and appears to be a left over of the Zone Warp bug from '08.

They have talked about addressing speed issues with all positions in their blogs, and turning with receivers / halfbcks (examples at least were these positions, not sure if it's going to be applied to all positions). So hopefully those fixes will address the instant directional changes by the defenses, instant stops, and the crazy superman float interception effectively allowing us to read both receivers and defenders body movements when passing.

Re: Will Madden 10 Support Route Based Passing / Timed Passing Patterns

Yes, good topic, Valdarez. IMO, though, procedural awareness must be part of this discussion as well. The issue of warping psychic defenders has plagued Madden passing for a bit, and for this kind of passing game to work, players must not be able to react to balls they can't see or to cover unrealistic amounts of ground once the ball is in the air. This is important for DBs, but especially LBs, who routinely make maddening plays on the ball that destroy true route concepts.

The other issue here is that it takes real football knowledge and sound strategy to operate a true timing-based passing system, and the general user base for Madden is likely not going to be willing and/or able to learn the principles and execute them consistently.

Even in APF, which you bring up in the original post, fails to punish poor user throws consistently. The number of dropped picks in that game is astounding. Madden would likely have to implement some similar kind of "cheat" to forgive poor user choices in the passing game.
