It's entirely possible that MLB never wanted it in the game to begin with. But things are legal by default. You can do pretty much anything unless the contract (or the law) says you can't. So MLB probably just didn't predict such features ever becoming real. Then by the time it happened in the early 2000's, it was too late for MLB to ban it, because they were already in the middle of a multi-year contract agreement. They had to wait until the contract expired (2005 for EA, not sure of the year for competitors), before they could add in new prohibitions.

EA didn't have an exclusive license back then did they? There were a bunch or different games across multiple platforms that all had the license, correct? They pretty much just had to pay a fee and that was that. With that said, I am sure back then they really didn't pay attention to all the little things in those games like they do now that there is only one game out there. An example is didn't one game "illegally" add real prospects to the game that weren't part of the MLBPA?

Sports in general aren't as loved as they used to be, it's now more habitual. I think a lot less people truly love sports than 30 years ago, and it has to do with all of this nitpicking going on, along with cheaters both individually and by organizations. Video games shouldn't go the same way but are seemingly following suit. People are starting to lose the love for sports video games because the league's higher-ups are too friggin tight-assed about what can be done in them. As a poster mentioned earlier, video games ultimately are FANTASY. That's why games like Super Mega Baseball are so refreshing and fun... and easy to love.

No idea if they ever had an exclusive one or not, but that doesn't mean they had no contract at all.

You still have to enter a mutually binding agreement to even acquire the right to produce an MLB video game. Think of it like a lease agreement to an apartment. You can sign a lease for as long or as short a period of time that you want, but once you sign it, you're locked in. But your landlord is locked in too. He can't create new rules, or raise the rent, unless those rules/increases are already outlined in the agreement you signed.

If your landlord suddenly decides he doesn't want people under the age of 20 living in his apartment, he has to wait until your entire lease ends, then include it in his new offer for a new lease, assuming you still want to live there.

I know this. My point, did MLB really pay attention to what was going in the games back then?

Right, but if you and the landlord mutually come to terms on a change, even on a lease, it's mended accordingly. If SCEA felt that adding a particular aspect to their game would garner a significant profit, then it's worth a shot at tackling it w/ MLB. I'd normally assume that they've already done so but the way those involved in San Diego like posts denouncing the possibly for an owner mode without a heads up that yes, they've tried... it just seems like there just fine and dandy w/ "taking it"
