1st Round Scores, Highlights & Notes:

South Region:

(1) Michigan 94 – (16) Oral Roberts 61
Easy win for Michigan, Latrelle Quarus had 22 points and 6 steals. Senior Center Nate Tinsley had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

(8) Indiana 73 – (9) Miami 69
A back and forth game that Indiana was able to pull out at the end with some clutch shots from Sr. SF Jonnie Welch, who had 27 points in the game. Miami’s Fr. C Taurean Rhodes had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in the loss.

(5) Florida 88 – (12) Rice 59
The Gators make this one look easy, Jr. PF Leroy Williams-King continues to dominate (24 points, 9 rebounds) while Fr. SF Clarence Shaw is continuing to increase his draft stock with is play (21 points).

(4) FIU 67 – (13) UIC 60
FIU holds off UIC, Sr. PF Omar Toole leads all scorers with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

(6) Oregon 75 – (11) Davidson 64
Oregon Jr. PG Jacody Barkley dishes out 12 assists and scores 17 points in the win.

(3) Cincinnati 79 – (14) Bethune Cookman 63
Cincinnati So. PG Chris Hunter has a huge night, with 32 points and 6 assists.

(7) Iowa 74 – (10) Louisville 70
Iowa’s So. Center Jameer Brackins grabs 12 rebounds and blocks 4 shots; and teammate Sr. SF Mason Declerq scores 21 points, including the go ahead 3pt shot with just 12 seconds remaining.

(2) Xavier 83 – (15) San Diego State 66
Xavier Sr. center Derek Benson Jr. dominates the paint against SD State. He scored 18 points, had 16 rebounds and 5 blocks.

West Region

(1) Gonzaga 82 – (16) South Alabama 57
Gonzaga’s starters were able to rest for most of the 2nd half in this blow-out. Sr. PG Aaron Poole had 13 points and 5 assists in limited minutes.

(9) Missouri 79 – (8) St. Mary’s 65
Missouri Fr. PF Roscoe Boss; had a big game to help the Tigers win. He posted a career high in points with 29, and also had 12 rebounds.

(5) West Virginia 86 – (12) Radford 60
West Virginia PF Briante Catchings is one of the premier shot blockers in the country, and tonight he put on a show with 7 blocks! So. PG TJ Fogg had a good game as well, 17 points and 7 assists.

(4) Michigan State 78 – (13) Yale 53
Michigan State was led by Jr. SF Ezrah White who had 19 points, while Fr. Center James Kirkland had 12 points and 9 rebounds.

(6) UNLV 80 – (11) Florida Gulf Coast 70
UNLV pulls away in 2nd half to advance, JJ Walker and Chris Bridges combine for 45 points.

(3) Arizona 93 – (14) Tennessee Tech 64
Arizona’s Fr. PG Corey Appling shreds the Tennessee Tech defense. Appling put up an astonishing 44 points. This puts him in a tie for 14th for most points ever scored in a single NCAA tournament game. The last player to score 44 or more points was Glenn Robinson in 1994.

(10) Buffalo 69 – (7) Virginia 68
Buffalo scores a big upset over Virginia on a last second shot by Sr. PG Sylvester Hairston. Trailing 68-66 with time running out, Hairston hoists up a 3pt shot over Virginia’s Larry Wanamaker for the winning bucket as time expires.

(2) UCLA 101 – (15) Holy Cross 61
UCLA’s Fr. PG Donovan Lockett returns from injury and UCLA goes back to the 2-PG starting line-up, pushing SG Jayshaun Parks back into a reserve role. PG’s Noah Van Exel and Lockett combine for 24 points and 18 assists, and Fr. PF Kyle Galloway scores a team high 24 points in the blowout victory.

East Region

(1) Villanova 90 – (16) Texas Southern 58
Villanova cruises by Texas Southern, SG Dustin O’Keady scored 25 points and hits 5 3pt shots in the win.

(9) NC State 66 – (8) Utah 64
NC State Fr. PF Jarron Okoye has his best game of the year, scoring 16 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking 4 shots, including the game tying layup attempt by Utah’s SG Marcel Stevens. It’s been a rough year for Okoye, but this game shows that the talent is there.

(5) UNC 78 – (12) Delaware 72
UNC struggles, but holds on to win a close one against Delaware. Sr. SG Marcus Upshaw was key down the stretch, hitting 2 3pt shots and making all four of his FT’s once Delaware starting fouling to extend the game.

(4) Rhode Island 73 – (13) Ohio 61
So. SF Denton Wayns leads Rhode Island to a victory, scoring 23 points.

(6) Florida State 71 – (11) UMBC 62
Florida State’s Disgruntled SG Jaykwon Owens was nowhere to be seen during this game, he wasn’t on the bench nor the locker room. Florida State was able to win the game, Sr. PG Patrick Bass had 13 points and 7 assists; Jr. center Jacob Swanson had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

(3) Kentucky 86 – (14) Dallas Baptist 69
Kentucky with an easy win over Dallas Baptist. SF Randall Hackett scores a team high 22. PG Juwan Richardson dishes out 11 assists and scores 11 points.

(7) Arkansas 73 – (10) UOP 65
Arkansas knocks off UOP. PG Ty Attles for the Razorbacks leads the team with 17 points and 8 assists. Aiden Pittman scores 16 points in the loss for UOP.

(2) Texas Tech 81 – (15) Sam Houston State 64

Texas Tech still without SF Keshaun Fields takes care of business in their 1st round matchup. PG Jamal Outlaw finished with 26 points and 6 assists; C RJ Andrews had dominate game inside with 12 boards and 5 blocks to go along with his 13 points.

Mid-West Region

(1) Kansas 95 – (16) Sacramento State 68
Kansas moves on after a 1st round blow-out. PG Terrence Braxton finished the game with 22 points and 7 assists, while center Orland Thames scores 16 and grabs 10 boards. FR SF Jaden Sanders chipped in with 12 points and 7 assists.

(9) Purdue 74 – (8) Auburn 71
Purdue holds off Auburn as Auburn SF Keenan Granger misses the tying 3pt shot with just seconds remaining. Purdue’s big men: Roscoe Peeler and Sean Alston combine for 36 points and 25 rebounds.

(5) Texas 77 – (12) Long Beach State 48
The Longhorns breeze through the 1st round. Center Alexander Jones Jr. had a big night, 21 points and 12 rebounds.

(4) Ohio State 69 – (13) Marist 56
Freshman PG Reilly Woods struggles, but Ohio State still wins. Woods had an off night shooting (2-10) and scored just 6 points in the 1st round match-up against Marist.

(11) Loyola 67 – (6) Nevada 61
Loyola with a shocking upset over Nevada. Loyola’s frontcourt were too much for the Wolfpack to handle. Nevada’s Tamir Vaughn had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.
Loyola’s center duo of Justin Givens and Chandler Rabb played very efficiently, combining for 29 points and 20 rebounds.

(3) Duke 85 – (14) Central Conn. State 66
Duke advances in a game that was never close. Sr. SG Jackson Snyder hits 6 3’s (22 points) and Fr. Center Niles Thomas finishes with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

(10) Houston 75 – (7) Fresno State 62
Another upset with Houston knocking off 7-seeded Fresno State. Jr. PG Moses Vincent put a quite the show, with 32 points and 6 assists…he also had 4 steals. Fresno States Jr. SG Drew Reeves finished with 16 points in the loss.

(2) Wichita State 89 – (15) UNCG 67
Wichita State routs UNCG; PG Tyrell Blount puts up 36 points in the victory.

2nd Round Notes, Highlights and Scores

South Region

(1) Michigan 71 – (8) Indiana 65
Michigan hangs on down the stretch in a game that was tied with just 2:31 left to play. Some key stops by their defense, mainly SG Latrelle Quarus who was matched up against Indiana SF Jonnie Welch for the majority of the game. Welch finished with 11 points on just 4-15 shooting.

(5) Florida 83 – (4) FIU 68
Florida rolls past FIU. PF Leroy Williams-King gets the best of Omar Toole in this matchup. Williams-King finished with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Toole finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 1 block.

(6) Oregon 71 – (3) Cincinnati 70
Cincinnati falls apart late, squandering their 6 point lead with just 30 seconds left in the game. Oregon trailing by 6 with the ball, comes down and Sr. SF Curtis Dantley hits a 3pt shot. The clock is down to 23.5 seconds, they inbound to PG Marvin Selden Jr, who misses both free throws. Oregon now down 3 with the clock ticking down gets a back door cut that leads to a wide open lay-up by PF Anton Basden. On the inbound the ball gets tipped away and Oregon’s PG Jacody Barkley comes up with the steal; with just seconds remaining he puts up a contested 15 foot shot, that misses; but Center Antonio Issel gets the put back tip in as time expires.

(7) Iowa 66 – (2) Xavier 63
Iowa’s seniors come up clutch down the stretch for the upset win over 2-seeded Xavier. SF Mason Declerq and PF Scottie Troutman score the team’s final 12 points of the game, with Declerq hitting 2 3’s in the final minute to seal the win. Derek Benson Jr. finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds for Xavier in the loss.

West Region

(1) Gonzaga 73 – (9) Missouri 70
Missouri can’t finish off the come-back, falls just short of upsetting Gonzaga. Gonzaga PG Aaron Poole finished the game with 21 points and 7 assists; PF Adam Sroka finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Missouri PF Roscoe Boss finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

(5) West Virginia 72 – (4) Michigan State 62
West Virginia pulls away late to advance to the sweet 16. PG TJ Fogg finished with 16 points and 9 assists; PF Briante Catchings had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. For Michigan State, SF Ezrah White finished with 19 points; Fr. Center James Kirkland had 14 points and 8 rebounds.

(3) Arizona 86 – (6) UNLV 80
Arizona outdueled UNLV in an up-tempo game that seemed to suit Arizona Fr. PG Corey Appling just fine. Appling finished with 31 points and 5 assists, and Center Joey Noel finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. For UNLV, So. SG JJ Walker finished with 23 points and 2 steals; Fr. PG Sammie Mann had a rough night trying to guard Appling, and didn’t fair to well offensively either, finished with just 7 points and 3 assists.

(2) UCLA 94 – (10) Buffalo 73
UCLA with another offensive outburst, So. SG Jayshaun Parks finishes with 27 points off the bench to lead all scorers; Fr. PF Kyle Galloway finishes with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Sylvester Hairston finishes with 23 points and 6 assists in the loss for Buffalo.

East Region

(1) Villanova 81 – (9) NC State 76
Villanova escapes in a close game with NC State. Sr. SG Dustin O’Keady was limited due to a sore ankle, which paved the way for Fr. SG Emmanuel Kittles to get more playing time, and he delivered with 16 points and 2 steals. Fellow Fr. PF Jalen Porter chipped in with 13 points and 8 rebounds. For the Wolfpack, Fr. PF Jarron Okoye had an impressive game in the loss, he finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

(5) UNC 79 – (4) Rhode Island 71
UNC outlasts Rhode Island in OT. Fr. SF Everson Blackwell led the team with 21 points (7 in OT), and Sr. SG Marcus Upshaw finished with 19 points (3-5 3pt). For Rhode Island So. SF Denton Wayns finished with a team high 22 points.

(3) Kentucky 71 – (6) Florida State 66
Florida State, again playing without SG Jaykwon Owens falls to Kentucky 71-66. Sr. PG Patrick Bass had 14 points and 6 assists in the loss. Kentucky’s So. SF Isaac Anthony led Kentucky in scoring with 20 points. Fr. Center Shakur Young finally had a big game in the tourney with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

(2) Texas Tech 74 – (7) Arkansas 67
Texas Tech still without their star SF Keyshaun Fields, advances to the sweet sixteen. Sr. PF Marshawn Gibbs had a stellar game, leading the team in points (22) and rebounds (12). While Fr. PG Jamal Outlaw finished with 13 points and 7 assists. Arkansas SG Lamar Evans led the Razorbacks in scoring with 21 points.

Mid-West Region

(1) Kansas 75 – (9) Purdue 61
Kansas moves on behind big performance from PG Terrence Braxton. Braxton finished the game with 30 points and 6 assists. PF Xavien Wallace added 15 points and 8 rebounds. For Purdue, center Roscoe Peeler finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks.

(4) Ohio State 73 – (5) Texas 70
Ohio State wins thriller against Texas. Fr. PG Reilly Woods scored the game’s final 6 points, as Ohio State completes comeback win in dramatic fashion. Down 3 with 38 seconds left in the game Woods hits a 3 to tie while being guarded by Denzel Marion. Texas runs down the clock on their possession and Alexander Jones Jr misses a shot from about 8 feet..rebound goes to PF Bradely Kaffka, outlet to Woods who puts up a 27 foot shot to win…nothing but net.

(3) Duke 86 – (11) Loyola 64
Loyola’s run ends early as Duke knocks them out. The Duke big-men were too athletic for the Loyola frontcourt, and they dominated the game. Niles Thomas finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while teammate Justin Denmon finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Loyola Fr. PF Robbie Mourning finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

(2) Wichita State 72 – (10) Houston 61
Houston was no match for Wichita State, as their Cinderella run ends in the 2nd round. PG Tyrell Blount finished with 33 points and 11 assists. Houston PG Moses Vincent finished with 26 points and 8 assists.

Sweet 16, Scores, Notes and Highlights

South Region

(5) Florida 71 – (1) Michigan 64
Florida is the first team to knock off a #1 seed this year, as they take out Michigan. PF Leroy Williams-King continues his stellar play; he finished the game with 22 points and 9 rebounds. For Michigan, SG Latrelle Quarus had 11 points and 3 steals in the loss.

(7) Iowa 69 – (6) Oregon 64

Iowa moves onto the Elite 8 with minor upset over Oregon. Iowa’s seniors led the way, SF Mason Declerq finished with 18 points and PF Scottie Troutman had 16 points and 10 rebounds. For Oregon PG Jacody Barkley finished with 17 points and 7 assists.

West Region

(1) Gonzaga 72 – (5) West Virginia 70
#1 Gonzaga hangs on against West Virginia. PF Adam Sroka finished with 19 points and 7 rebounds. For West Virginia, PG TJ Fogg had 16 points and 8 assists in the loss.

(3) Arizona 84 – (2) UCLA 81
Arizona prevails in the up-tempo game against UCLA. This game was close the entire game (no team led by more than 5). Fr. PG Corey Appling continues his blazing hot streak in the tourney; he finished with 37 points and 7 assists. For UCLA, Fr. PF Kyle Galloway had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

East Region

(1) Villanova 84 – (5) UNC 72
Villanova’s depth ends up being too much for UNC to handle. SG Dustin O’Keady led all scorers with 26. SF Ely Jay pitched in 17 points and 5 rebounds. For UNC, Fr. SF Everson Blackwell finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds; Sr. SG Marcus Upshaw ended with 19 points.

(2) Texas Tech 82 – (3) Kentucky 68
Texas Tech got a boost with the return of So. SF Keshaun Fields, and he was dominant in his return, posting 38 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. PG Jamal Outlaw added 21 points and 5 assists. For Kentucky’s freshman it was a tough night. PG Juwan Richardson finished with 9 points and 4 assists; center Shakur Young had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Mid-West Region

(4) Ohio State 76 – (1) Kansas 72
Another #1 seed falls, as Ohio State takes out Kansas. Kansas PG Terrence Braxton struggled in the loss to Ohio State; the Junior PG had a tournament low 8 points on just 4-14 shooting, and was outplayed by Ohio State’s Fr. PG Reilly Woods, who finished with 22 points and 7 assists.

(2) Wichita State 72 – (3) Duke 70
Wichita State moves on to Elite 8 after a team effort in win over Duke. Most of the year the Shockers have relied on PG Tyrell Blount, but this game required everyone to pitch in. Blount had an off night (13 points, 4 assists) so other players needed to step up, and they did. Sr. center Perry Hardaway had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jr. SF Zachary Nash pitched in with 16 points and 5 rebounds, while the biggest contributor of the night was Fr. SG Elias Kidd, who had a team high 19 points (he only averaged 7.5 during reg. season). For Duke, Sr. SG Jackson Snyder had 17 points, Fr. PF Justin Denmon finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds while Fr. Center Niles Thomas had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
