And was it just a councelor? or an actual psychologist or psychiatrist?

A councelor shouldn't be giving you a diagnosis like that, or even suggesting you have something like that without the consult of a psychiatrist.

I began showing signs of it in first grade with involuntary head movements, facial tics, etc. and my symptoms have stayed pretty consistent in the time since (I do not experience the stereotypical vocal outbursts; my issues are far less severe than that). I can control my symptoms to a certain degree, but only for a limited stretch of time.

I'm pretty certain that the tics were a catalyst for much of the anxiety I felt while growing up. I played basketball in high school and had a few friends but I just never felt comfortable in most social situations. I lacked confidence in myself and did not feel very comfortable in my own skin.

Over the past few years, really in the time since I met my girlfriend (who will be my wife, at some point), I have developed a sense of confidence and comfort with myself that I never quite thought I would possess. I think that a lot of it just comes with getting older and the resulting maturity that allows for a greater understanding of oneself.

I just graduated from college on Saturday and I feel that I have finally put most of my issues behind me. I still have my anxieties like most individuals do, but the change in how I view myself really has made a world of difference.
Both of my older brothers have TS. Strangely, my sister and I do not, but needless to say, it was a huge part of my life. My mom was...let's just say extremely involved...with our local organization for almost 20 years because of it.

It's amazing that for all of the problems they had as kids and still have today, the cool guys they have turned into. Nowadays everyone knows about Tourette Syndrome--it's definitely a part of our collective pop culture. However, when my oldest brother (who is now 39) had it as a kid, NO ONE knew what the heck his deal was. My parents had to go to specialist after specialist for years, and even when they found out what he had, the treatments were completely experimental. To this day my brother refuses to take any medication that isn't aspirin because of all the problems he had with side effects.

A couple of friends that have gotten married met through eHarmony. If I was single and looking, I would definitely be on that site or something similar.

I met my first girlfriend in a yahoo chat room back when the internet started to just become popular (think You've Got Mail...). We dated for about a year and a half during high school. My wife still gives me crap that I met someone in a chat room...can't say that I blame her!

Of course, my wife can't talk either. We met in college and she was still dating someone back home. We fooled around for a couple of months, even once right before her boyfriend was coming in for a visit. That Sunday night she drops the bomb on me that they "got engaged" over the weekend. Of course I knew it was BS on both of their parts. I think he knew his days were numbered, so he went for the ol' Hail Mary, and she felt guilty telling him the truth and saying no. A couple of weeks later we were fooling around again, and a few weeks after that, we were officially a couple and have been inseperable ever since.

It's not even that.

A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) can diagnose just as well as a Ph.D., M.D., or PsyD., but if they're diagnosing after only one session there is reason for suspicion.

You're right, I just don't trust an LPC to diagnose and treat a major personality disorder like NPD. Just my opinion though.

And yeah, if its just one session that counselor should be fired.

Re: Deepest, darkest secrets you're willing to share about yourself

I'll go ahead and share here as well.

- Most people don't know this, but I tried to kill myself in the 8th grade, I'm currently twenty.

- Also I really don't care about my life, I could die tomorrow and not really care.

- I feel like there is no hope for humanity, and that a zombie apocalypse is literally the answer to everyone's problems.

This might scare a few people away, but I had to put it somewhere. It's never good to bottle up your emotions and I've done it for 6/7 years.

Re: Deepest, darkest secrets you're willing to share about yourself

I'm immensely jealous of the attention and love that my 2 best friends get from the rest of the school. I always feel like I'm "just there." I feel under appreciated and it feels like people don't really care about me, they just care about them. Actually, it pisses me off. Glad I'm graduating Saturday.

Really? I died yesterday, and I definitely care.
