They were just at an impasse. Definitely could've and arguably should've called his bluff, but if he signed that QO this summer, with the potential to leave after a year, the decision was made for them.

Side note, but I really hate the overdramatic statements from the FO, about how these lunatics charging $200 to watch the worst team in the league thought it would be a disservice to the fans to give KP a max. This entire team is a disservice to the fans. Nobody's trying to hear that ****. So disingenuous, reminds me of Hal saying how badly the Yankees let the fans down and then he goes shopping off the dollar menu all offseason. Bring on the lockouts.
I was going to say they should’ve still held on to him until then but if this was the best offer they would receive, then I guess it makes sense to jump on that offer.

Forgetting all the side stuff, I really don't even see this being a massive loss for the Knicks. Dude missed half of last year, all of this year.. Yes he's a "unicorn" and the potential for someone like him is sky-high without question, but people have been acting like the guy is already some proven star, which realistically he's not.

We kinda had this argument back a year or so ago, something about him and Devin Booker and the Porzingis-hype consensus thought was that he was a much better player than Booker.. I wasn't sure that was true then, or now. It's not like the Knicks just lost Anthony Davis for Dennis Smith. They lost a fringe All-Star with a torn ACL in exchange for a player that could be better for all we know, loads of cap space and flexibility, and apparently saved themselves from a massive headache as well.

Yeah, he's a bit overrated. Some of our fanbase knew, some were in denial, some thought he was great. Even when healthy he's what, the 25-30th best player in the league? He's unique and has some insane highlights so I think that causes some people to overrate him.

The history for guys of his height staying healthy throughout their career is bleak. Even when he's healthy he's worn down by the end of every season. He's 7'3" and a career 43% shooter who's a poor rebounder and reluctant to play the five. If he's healthy he's a good #2 on a top team. In the stacked West he might not be a perennial All-Star.

The one thing I will say is that he never played in a system or with a playmaker who created easy looks for him; he had to work on everything. The Knicks stuck him on the elbow and had him iso a ton against defenders who are 6'8 and much quicker than him. Now whether that was KP's preference or the team's system is TBD but if that's how he wants to play then it's not ideal long term.

And he may end up healthy and see steady improvement and become that top 10 player people envision him to be, that will be great for Dallas or whoever he plays for at that point. I just don't think it's a huge loss for the Knicks as of right now, and if they are able to land a star with this CAP space I don't think it will be something people look back on as a horrible trade.

From Stefan Bondy, of the Daily News:

Kyrie Irving has shifted from his commitment to re-signing with the Celtics: “I don’t owe anybody ****.”

Also said the Celtics are still in the lead.

On the same night in which Doncic learned he did not make the NBA All-Star team, the Mavericks acquired a reigning All-Star in Porzingis and, according to a league source, now will set their sights on a summer addition of a 28-year-old center who on Thursday became an All-Star himself.

He is 7-foot Orlando center Nikola Vucevic. He will become an unrestricted free agent at season's end. And one of his agents is Bill Duffy, who also represents Doncic.
Getting ahead of ourselves but rumors like this are icing on the cake for Knicks fans. Dallas looking at centers and KP refusing to play the 5 is a problem long term.

Him staying at the 4 is ridiculous. He's 7'3" matched up against small stretch 4s. It was a problem in New York: staying in front of guys, taking him out of PnR defensive situations and dragging him away from the rim as he stayed glued to a shooter.
