Meh, they are just following the rules by fining these guys. Players know what the result will be. If they did a domestic abuse awareness month they would be totally fine with guys wearing purple.

Although I'm sure this won't stop columnists and opinion makers from declaring (pointlessly) that Goodell needs to be fired, for the 900th time.

League: "Oh no you don't. Promoting is our job....so give us $8800, please"

I don't have a problem with the fines as long as the funds actually do go to charity.

It is a win win in my view. The player can wear something to get awareness out, then money from the fine goes to charity.

I think it would be nice for the NFL to donate all fines to charities of each player's choice though.

Of course this depends on where the funds actually go.

Well, if you wanna argue that the rule should be changed, then that's cool. But then you have to allow everyone to wear what they want, in support of whatever cause they want to support. You won't be able to pick and choose which cause is okay and which isn't.

Fines do go to charities, but not ones that are the players choice or their personal charity. They go to charities of the NFL's choosing.

Again, my biggest gripe isn't the fines, do the crime do the time. Players know they face fines for these "uniform infractions" but rather the fact that the NFL chooses to go with the maximum they can. They could easily show some humility in the case of Cameron or Gay and recognize what they are doing and why and say we will impost 50% or 25% or hell even 75% of the max. Again we are talking about pocket change here, so its about the principles and appearance for me.

We'll use William Gay's personal tragedy to help pull us out of the Ray Rice domestic violence scandal our lax policies have created but, his wearing purple cleats to push awareness of that same issues we are gonna hit him with the max fine we can.
