If the slaves get spawnified they most likely die, which I guess is a better result than having a conversion. So the slave master could lead 4 slaves to get water. It doesn't really make sense to send a scientist with a slave team I don't think, as you can't have odd amounts of slaves.

According to the rules, there is a 75% chance they die

Autumn

So we could have Chubby, Schmidty and three slaves go fetch water.

Hoops and Crimson work on converting.

Darth leads a team of slaves on converting.

Simbo leads a team of Zinto, Shiggles, Mauboy and ? on converting.

Chief, my thought is that we will go collect water tomorrow. I'm assuming, but perhaps wrongly so, that if we get water damage tonight, but collect water tomorrow, we'll be okay.

If we wait and go tomorrow we can collect more water per AP is my hope.

Based on past games, not a great assumption. Amount of water found is pretty variable, and there is the potential for the spawn to sabotage a mission. If they have us at a point where we die of thirst, it is probably worth their while to do so.

I'd be more inclined to send a mission for water tonight.

Autumn

What do you mean tonight? Missions can only be at day.

hoopsguy
06-18-2012, 01:39 PM
I'm thinking today is a free go get water day, with no pressure.

If there is a successful attack on the water module tonight, we will have two days to get enough water for all of us, which will be 15 at the end of the lynch on Day Three. We will need to use man cycles to repair the water module AND also send an away team out for more water, meaning less ability to do any work on anything that gets us off the planet. We also don't have any idea what kind of water levels such a team brings back. What if it's a small amount? And these missions, assuming the Spawn have some ability to target them or sabotage their efforts, will be under sharp attack, because it would be an easy victory for the Spawn if we all start to die off from dehydration.

If we send out a team today, we protect ourselves from having to find out about these things while under pressure, and we build a reserve so that we don't have to be desperate tomorrow. Having a reserve, in fact, might dissuade the Spawn from even making the water module a target.

Welcome to the first spot on my "managing risk well, inclined to trust him now" list. No D1 vote for you.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 01:41 PM
The question is then whether it's better to have slaves fetch water, or convert. They only do half the work, but are less a problem if they get Spawnified. If they get supervised by an engineer they can contribute 3 cycles of work, versus the 4 cycles regular workers could do. If they go on a mission they will only contribute 2 cycles of work, versu the four. And actually if Chubby supervises them converting he can have four more so we could get 5 cycles out of them. So I think it's better to have them comvert if we're willing to risk the away teams getting turned into baddies.

I misspoke - I meant today :)

hoopsguy
06-18-2012, 01:45 PM
We probably want scientists on missions, as they improve chances of success. That modifier is unknown, but we are giving away an edge if we don't have them on the away missions.

Julio Riddols
06-18-2012, 01:47 PM
I think the last things we should convert would be warehouse 4 and 5 and the stuff in building D.

The slave pens can be converted as needed when we lose slaves.

Once we convert a building, the power station supplying that building seems like a logical next step, or converting them at the same time also seems logical.

Julio Riddols
06-18-2012, 01:52 PM
I'm also of the belief that sending slaves to get water (at least for now) is a solid idea, because we need to maintain the facilities we have the best we can while we have the people available to do so. I'm concerned that putting more members of the crew at risk than necessary isn't a good idea until we get further into the game.

I'm thinking the more we maintain things, the less fixing we'll have to do, which will allow us to continue moving forward instead of spinning tires.

JAG
06-18-2012, 01:52 PM
If saldana is going to investigate me anyway, then I think it also makes sense for me to lead the exhibition to get water (since we seem to be leaning this way), which frees up Autumn, LSG, and Packer to perform their role functions and gives us a scan of an away team member to make sure they didn't get converted. I guess that might depend on the timing of when the scan happens though, otherwise maybe Zinto should lead it since he's the officer we can most afford to be converted (sorry Ensign).

Autumn
06-18-2012, 01:55 PM
Okay so I'd now suggest a real water mission, with one of the officers, a scientist, and three volunteers. Have Chubby and an Engineer lead one slave conversion crew, another Engineer lead a regular crew, and the Chief and other engineer work together.

Is it more useful to have LSG reassigning a miner or leading a mission? I can lead one, or I can plan two missions for tomorrow.

JAG could fill in as a conversion worker if we need one with one of his AP. Zinto, Britrock?, Shiggles, Mauboy. It seems like we should probably skip the assignation and have Julio do conversion or mission work. Although we could fill in with slaves on the conversion crew too.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 01:56 PM
Oh right, Zinto can lead a mission too.

JAG
06-18-2012, 02:07 PM
We have enough slaves that we could do an away team of Zinto/JAG (1 of them), Schmidty, and three slaves, with enough slaves leftover for the engineer/Chubby team of slave converters to minimize crew chances for infection on the away team.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 02:09 PM
I think it's better to have Zinto or LSG run the team. Even if we hae a good scan of JAG, there's no reason to risk having him get infected. Not only is he an important role but he's going to be good at it (and certainly better than me), so let's not risk him.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 02:10 PM
Oh and I see that LSG's assigning doesn't take effect until the next day, so a galley master wouldn't be able to protect the water tonight.

Also, three miners would be optimal for a mining mission tomorrow, so maybe we don't want to assign any?

Abe Sargent
06-18-2012, 02:15 PM
I'm leaning towards no vote today, by the way.

Chubby
06-18-2012, 02:21 PM
So it sounds like from BK's response that dehydration would set in right away in the morning if the water plant was attacked tonight. So that makes me think you're right, chief, about needing a reserve right away. As i've said, I'd prefer to do less away missions and produce less chances for spawning, but what can you do.

So we don't have a ton of free people, so I'd suggest that we convert with slaves mostly, and take the few free people on the water mission. Or I suppose we could do it the other way and send hte slaves to get water.

I'm down with whatever you guys think is best. I would point out that I don't think the above scenario is the only one where we'd lose the water plant fwiw

Zinto
06-18-2012, 02:21 PM
I agree that LSG or I should lead the team instead of Jag. There is no reason to risk a conversion of our captain on day one regardless of him being scanned when we have enough people to carry out tasks without him.

Zinto
06-18-2012, 02:23 PM
Has everyone checked in yet? I do not think everyone has.

I'd be up for leading an away mission if needed.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 02:38 PM
We should settle on the Away crew soon so the officer can get the order in. I'm for JAG making final decisions like this so we're funneling important stuff through a soon-to-be vetted source.

I was referring to directly attacking the water supply, my reading is if they go after the power they will knock out our water production as well

Also, three miners would be optimal for a mining mission tomorrow, so maybe we don't want to assign any?

If we get screwed water-wise, we're really going to want a galley master around to distribute water. That seems like a critical role for us moreso than having a +5% chance (or whatever it is) of the mining mission succeeding. Having a medic (can change wounded to healed and has a small chance of replacing a dead doctor) seems pretty useful as well.

Autumn

My suggestion would be

Water Mission
LoneStarGirl
Schmidty
Zinto
2 slaves

Conversion Team
Chubby
CrimsonFox
10 slaves

Conversion Team
Hoopsguy
Darth Vilus

Conversion Team
Simbo Klice
Zinto
Mauboy
Shiggles
Julio Riddols

I'm ignoring all Security guys though I haven't read their roles closely enough to know if that makes sense or not.

Autumn

Water Mission
Zinto
Schmidty

10 slaves

Darth Vilus

Conversion Team
Simbo Klice
Zinto
Mauboy

Security Chief PackerFanatic, I would humbly recommend you advise Sergeant-at-Arms Danny to distribute phasers to all security personell (and only security personnell--outside of officers' needs of course).

Just thought I would bring this up again, in case it needs to be discussed.

Obviously, there is no certainty we wouldn't be giving a phaser to a Spawned member, as there are five security personnel, and that's a large group that could have a Spawn. But in doing our jobs of protecting, it would seem to be a key addition.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 02:45 PM

You have Zinto in two places. Ok, the away team we need to formalize fairly quickly and I say it should be:

Zinto
Schmidty
3 slaves

Please get your orders in. If Schmidty hasn't popped in to PM BK to go on the away mission by 5:30 EST, that will be one of my orders today.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 02:47 PM
I think that would give us 15 cycles of conversion work done.

Autumn

So the word 'conversion' is being used BOTH as a term for the group (Change a building into something else) AND for the spawn? (Change someone into a spawn)

Can we please choose a different word for one or the other?

Chief Rum

We should construct a plan including security personell for being used for converting as well, since with the fence perimeter will certainly hold up through the rest of this day.

Autumn

Oh good, I just read the Security Chief role and realized he can give orders to the security personnel. That solves the problem of organizing protection schemes. I like it.

I'm not sure what to do about that final slot. I guess just leave it empty or have JAG fill it if he ends up having an action point.

I haven't seen too many people use conversion as a term for Spawning actually.

But if we want to be clear, I say we continue to use conversion/converted for the ship process and some variation of "spawned/spawning/spawnified" for being "converted".

I am a little apprehensive about sending the captain off the ship...spawn games are about clearing people and keeping them cleared...we should limit his exposure and not take the random chance...make the spawnlings work for it if they want to turn him... I will save my scan til after we decide if he is going off ship.

Barkeep, am I reading this right?

IT seems to me that the first 3 warehouses are the only things that are not usable until we convert them into something else, correct? Every thing else works right now?

Also, what are our options for these warehouses? Crystal and water storage? Or can we turn them into any building we want? Like a backup anything?

Recommendation to Security Chief Packer fanatic, regarding security schedules.

There are four security personnell besides the Security Chief, although the Sergeant at Arms and Slavemaster have specified roles. I would recommend organizing us into two two-man teams. Each night we will be one team on guard and one team sleeping. You determine which team goes first and what we protect.

Every four cycles (one night for each team), we can changeup the schedules some, if needed, so that the Spawn can't easily take advantage of our patterns.

And chief PF, you yourself would determine your actions randomly, sometimes being on watch with one team or with the other, or a third option altogether.

What do you think?

Okay Chief hoops,

Since the only thing we have that needs converting is the first 3 warehouses, why don't we power through them today so they will be ready. I'm guessing other days we will probably have to worry about other things breaking down. So if we get the jump on the warehouses today and completely convert 1-2 of them today, then we'll have them all ready and won't have to play catchup later when things start breaking.

So is it possible to completely knock out a warehouse in a day? How many of us are required for that to happen?

Autumn
06-18-2012, 03:31 PM
The Chief Engineer and an Engineer will produce 6 cycles of work.

An Engineer, Slave Mastera nd 10 slaves will produce 5 cycles of work

An Engineer and a crew of four will produce 4 cycles of work.

So we may actually want to split this up differently.

CrimsonFox
06-18-2012, 03:32 PM
Let's figure out something though. Each warehouse is 7 cycles of work. Is there a way we can split up the teams to make sure both get done?

So what is a cycle?

Autumn
06-18-2012, 03:33 PM
So what is a cycle?

It's like a man hour.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 03:34 PM
I'm not sure we can knock out two 7 cycle jobs. If we split up the chief engineer and engineer they only do two each. Or I guess we could have the Chief E. do 2 cycles of work, the other Engineer lead a team of slaves for 3 cycles of work. That should do it.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 03:35 PM
So Hoops converts a Warehouse. (2)

CrimsonFox and a team of 6 slaves converts a Warehouse (3)

Darth Vilus, Chubby and a team of 10 slaves converts a Warehouse (5)

Simbo Klice and a team of four players converts a Warehouse (4)

Simbo and Crimson work on one, Darth and HOops work on the other and we just barely make it.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 03:36 PM
Of course this leaves us open to sabotage, but if one of them fakes their work it gives us a good lead at least.

Barkeep49
06-18-2012, 03:37 PM
The team comes back from their water mission. "Considering we didn't have any planning," Zinto explains as the water goes through the filter, "We did well, maybe even pretty well, for ourselves. Definitely could have been better though."

After a few moments of anticipation you learn the team got 23 units of water.

Chief Rum
06-18-2012, 03:37 PM
So what is a cycle?

A cycle is the generic term for a shift (day or night). Each Day has a day cycle and a nigth cycle. So two cycles per Day.

A man-cycle is like Autumn's man-hour. A man-cycle is the work a man does in a cycle. So if converting a warehouse takes 7 man-cycles, then in order for us to convert the warehouse in one day, we would need seven men for that one day. Or if we were doing it at our leisure, it could be done by one man in seven days (presuming sleeping at night).

A quick recap of the limited action so far

CrimsonFox

Basic Game Concepts

The Ship
In this game the Survivors must construct the ship they will use to escape the planet. This will happen by converting Planet Facilities into Ship Modules. The following must be present for the ship to take off:

Power Facilities (at least 4 of the 5)
Water Processing
Cargo Holds 1-3
CrewQuarters
Officers’ Offices

It is optional as to whether the other Planet Facilities are converted. Once a facility is converted into a Ship Module, it provides no benefit, except where noted, until after Lift-Off.

Locations
In this game locations act slightly differently depending on whether they are on the planet and or are part of the ship. Work must be done to convert planet facilities into Ship Modules.

Locations

Warehouses 1-5 Warehouses 1-3 are full of already harvested Crystlium and have been sealed and may not be accessed by the Survivors. Their conversion is required for lift-off. Warehouses 4 & 5 can can hold either Crystlium or Water. They both begin the game empty but can each hold up to 40 units of either water or Crystlium (or any combination of the two). Their conversion is optional for lift-off.

Slave Pens 1-5 Their conversion is optional for lift-off.
Power Facilities 1-5 Conversion of at least 4 of the facilities are required for lift-off. The ship may not lift-off (see Lift-Off below) unless the Power Facilities are undamaged. Once the ship has lifted-off the Power Facilities may not be damaged.
Water Plant Their conversion is required for lift-off.
Security Headquarters Conversion is optional, but the Brig and the Armory will not function on the ship without it.
Armory Conversion is optional, but the Security HQ must be converted for the Armory to function.
Brig No work may be done to convert the brig while there is anyone inside of it.
Crew Quarters Their conversion is required for lift-off.
Medical Facilities Their conversion is optional for lift-off.
Scientists’ Lab Their conversion is optional for lift-off.
Officers’ Offices Work may still be done after their conversion but before lift-off. Their conversion is required for lift-off.

Lift-off
In order to lift-off, the Power Facilities must not be damaged, the Cargo Hold must have the required amount of Crystlium, and all required buildings must be converted. The Captain orders the lift-off by posting the order in the thread. Once all conditions are met lift-off takes place immediately.

Oh now I know where britrock was getting his conversion info. A bit confused about conversion now. THought it was about convertin buildings into other things to use, but we have to convert all that stuff into a shipversion of it and after we convert it we can't use it on the planet for stuff? I guess some of it will still work other will not.

JAG

The Chief Engineer and an Engineer will produce 6 cycles of work.

An Engineer, Slave Mastera nd 10 slaves will produce 5 cycles of work

An Engineer and a crew of four will produce 4 cycles of work.

So we may actually want to split this up differently.

I think (until BK tells me I'm wrong ;) ) that warehouse 1-5 is one 'location', so they can split up the work however they want among the warehouses, but can't also work on the living units for example.

Darth Vilus

I'm going to put in my order to participate on a conversion team with Darth Vilus, unless there are strong thoughts opposing this action. This is per Autumn's suggested orders post in #287.

Assuming we have to specify, I would suggest:

Hoops converts Warehouse 2
Darth Vilus, Chubby and a team of 10 slaves converts Warehouse 2

CrimsonFox and a team of 6 slaves converts Warehouse 1
Simbo Klice and a team of Mauboy, Shiggles, Julio Riddols and ? converts Warehouse 1

We need a fourth member for Simbo's team, one of the security personnel I guess, or JAG?

Yes. The Warehouses, Slave Pens, and Power Facilities are all separate places for purposes of conversion. For purposes of defense or attack they're 1 location.

It looks like we can have obe of the security crew do the action Autumn. The security crewmen have important uses for AP but most critical are their night actions. One of them can man the security HQ during the day today (say Chief Rum) and dubb can do the conversion work.

And we have to convert the Security HQ before the brig and armory will work. BK is that just talking about the ship versions of these things?

This question confuses me. For the Brig or Armory to work on the ship you must have the Security HQ, but you can convert the HQ AFTER the Brig or Armory if that's what you're asking.

JAG
06-18-2012, 04:12 PM
Is it necessary to man the security HQ during the day?

It's an option for a day action (the only one security crewmen can undertake that isn't a general action available to all), so presumably there would be a reason.

Autumn
06-18-2012, 04:15 PM
So I'm finally trying to understand the Spawn rules. There's a Queen, and a Council of 3 longest living Spawn. And then the rest of the spawn don't even know each other, it seems. I assume that means there's probably 3-4 spawn now, and new ones won't necessarily know who the others are. The Spawn can attack to kill. The Queen can attack to create a spawnling, which may become a Spawn.

I don't see any reason to think they can make attacks during the day, but it doesn't say precisely whether the regular spawn can or not.

CrimsonFox

[b]Okay, I think we got that. That converted HQ makes converted brig and armory work. And that unconverted HQ makes unconverted brig and armory work.

Plus, it makes sense that if the brig and armory are converted but the HQ is not, then the converted elements there are not available.

What I most wanted to know was the last remaining scenario: if the HQ is converted, does that make currently unconverted brig and armory unusable?

Chief PF, another addendum to the security plan: select 2-3 people/places for each "active guard" (guard on patrol that night) from which to choose to protect, and then let them use their prerogative on which of those they will protect. I beleiev Chief PF was waiting for your opinion on that? And my proposal was not just fro dubb, but for all security personnel (or at least the active ones, I guess).

Keep in mind, if the armory is damaged we will not be able to return the guns. I would presume we would also not be able to remove guns that are in the armory when it is damaged. So even if we hand phasers out to security personnel scheduled to sleep, at least they are not in the potentially vulnerable armory.

Based on past Spawn games and a lack of clarity in the rules, I am not certain that we are starting with Spawn.

Plus, every worker we kill, we lose that man-cycle of work going forward forever. Even the Spawn will have to do some work, because it will be obvious in most cases if they try and fake it, but don't do work.

But if I go we can take extra slaves which was the original point, not completing 2 warehouses would be a shame imo

That is interesting, one missing phaser. Perhaps there is one spawn right now who has the phaser and the others will be born over night?

If we have a Galley Master, and if Danny assigns them a phaser, they can protect the Water Plant tonight also.

The security crew will have to figure out a system for protection at night to keep everyone from getting exhausted, but I'll leave that to them and they'll want some sort of randomness to it to avoid the Spawn figuring it out.

I think a good idea to this is assining a location to every security member. So, a member may have 3 locations assigned to them and then they choose which ti protect or to sleep. This keeps the spawn guessing while still allowing us to not accidently double up guard duty.

Based on past games, not a great assumption. Amount of water found is pretty variable, and there is the potential for the spawn to sabotage a mission. If they have us at a point where we die of thirst, it is probably worth their while to do so.

It does seem like water mission today is the safe play

Abe Sargent
06-18-2012, 05:19 PM
For you and Abe, what is the argument for not executing? I have a reason or two now, but they're probably not similar.

Why no lynch on D1:

We need all of the help we can get on work stuff, and I suspect that the number of spawn is either 0 or so small (maybe as low as 1; even 2 would seem excessively high when you see BK say how many areas we can be converted on and endangered by) as to make it so unlikely we would hit one a randomly that we shouldn't bother.

Danny
06-18-2012, 05:19 PM
If saldana is going to investigate me anyway, then I think it also makes sense for me to lead the exhibition to get water (since we seem to be leaning this way), which frees up Autumn, LSG, and Packer to perform their role functions and gives us a scan of an away team member to make sure they didn't get converted. I guess that might depend on the timing of when the scan happens though, otherwise maybe Zinto should lead it since he's the officer we can most afford to be converted (sorry Ensign).

sounds like a good idea

Have we talked at all about what facilities/people are most important for the security to guard? With the number of rooms and roled players in the game, this would seem important. At the same time, Chief might have been alluding to just that in 451, and maybe PF is on top of things already.

Other than that, carry on efficiently converting warehouses.

Danny
06-18-2012, 05:22 PM
I agree that LSG or I should lead the team instead of Jag. There is no reason to risk a conversion of our captain on day one regardless of him being scanned when we have enough people to carry out tasks without him.

I'll have to read Saldana's ability again to see if it is worth the risk. You are probably right though.

So, right now, I am thinking I will give phasers out to all officers and security personal. I will then assign each security personnel a number of locations that they can choose to protect is so desired.

In general, I am leaning toward protecting locations and going exhausted as I think if we get an early push on getting ready for launch that will put the spawn into reaction mode.

We have a ton of work to do to get off this GOdforsaken rock.
And we need all the people we have. Day one will be a villager kill for sure as usual.

From other spawn games it seemed clear that spawn candidates were quickly narrowed down from within specific groups who did specific activities.

Chief mentioned he wasn't sure there were any spawn in our group yet. Well that seems unlikely but I wouldn't be surprised if there were only 1 actually.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of this plan. Any random group of 4 has a good chance to produce a potential spawn methinks.

Also I'm not sure YOU are clear at this point.

In the past I've seen doctors pull people in to infect as well as doctors get infected by those they pull in.

Ah okay NOW I finally see where you were coming from. So many rules!

But here are the rules I think you were using:
Away Teams
Each day all officers and the Slave Master may lead an away team (the Slave Master may only lead an away team made up completely of slaves). There may be more than 1 away team each day. A crew member, if asked, must go on away team if they have the action points to do so.

An away team must be designated as an:
*Exploration mission (Gives a bonus to a future type of mission; Must always be a planned away team)
*Mining mission (Harvests Crystlium)
*Water mission (Finds water)
*Other type of mission (As offered by the GM)

Supervise Slaves Day or Night The Slave Master may choose to supervise the work of slaves along with an Engineer performing the Supervise Conversion action. The Slave Master may supervise an additional 4 slaves. 1 AP

So Darth and Chubby supervising 10 slaves = 5 points and hoops gives us 2 for 7

Sure. If know one else is using people and slaves for away missions and they'd be wasted otherwise why not. Granted Darth and Chubby and hoops would all have to submit the correct orders for that to happen.

Anyway like I said I already grabbed my 6 slaves and filled out the proper requisions and am on my way to WH1. If your above plan doesn't happen Autumn, it's okay. It would mean 6 cycles have been done on 1 and one of us can either bang it out tonight or tomorrow.

fair point about me, but here is the thing...if i am clear (which i am) and i clear the captain, (which i did) and you put us in the brig, then tomorrow add whomever i scan, and the day after we add the 4th, that is not a random group of 4

Supervise Slaves Day or Night The Slave Master may choose to supervise the work of slaves along with an Engineer performing the Supervise Conversion action. The Slave Master may supervise an additional 4 slaves. 1 AP

I am of the mind that only officers should hold weapons at this point - but I will let you decide that.

There is no assurance that an officer is less likely to be a Spawn that non-officer. I think if we are going to selectively pass out guns the focus should be on cleared vs non-cleared rather than officer vs non-officer.

Also, don't we want all of our security personnel to be armed since they get a bonus to prevent attacks if they have a weapon? I thought that everyone got some bonus in the past, but that might be my memory playing tricks on me since I could not find this in the rules.
