Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Orioles Rough Up Ryu, Embarrass Blue Jays In Blowout

The Baltimore Orioles stormed into the Rogers Centre on Thursday evening and took care of business against Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Toronto Blue Jays in a 15-5 blowout that saw the struggling Orioles put together 20 hits in the win.

Trey Mancini, Rio Ruiz, and Chris Davis all went deep for the Orioles, who got to Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu early and often. Ryu was unable to escape his third inning of work and finished with an ugly seven runs surrendered on eight hits in just two innings of work. The start marked Ryu's shortest career outing.

Orioles third baseman Rio Ruiz drove in four runs, including a three-run blast in the eighth inning off Blue Jays reliever Thomas Pannone. Outfielder Trey Mancini added in another three RBIs in the win, including a two-run shot earlier in the eighth off Justin Miller.

The Blue Jays had very little to be happy about after Thursday's embarrassing performance. One of the lone bright spots in the ballgame for Toronto was outfielder Randal Grichuk's performance. Grichuk went deep twice for his tenth and eleventh homers of the season accounting for three of the Blue Jays' five runs. A Brandon Drury two-run homer counted for the remaining offence. Drury himself had a night to remember, as the utility infielder made his pitching debut in the ninth inning.

With the Blue Jays down by ten, manager Charlie Montoyo turned to Drury to record the final three outs of the ballgame. The infielder threw a scoreless ninth, including picking up his first career MLB strikeout when he sat down Hanser Alberto with an 86 mph fastball.

The Blue Jays will look to bounce back from this ugly performance on Friday evening as they continue to take on the Orioles in the second game of the four game weekend series.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Orioles Survive Rough Start, Complete Comeback Against Blue Jays

One inning into the ballgame and things didn't look too good for the Baltimore Orioles, but the American League-worst Orioles were able to fight their way back from a early deficit to pull off a 7-6 comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

Orioles starter John Means couldn't make it out of the first inning and was only able to record two outs as the Blue Jays sent ten batters to the plate and put up six runs thanks to a pair of two-run homers from Billy McKinney and Danny Jansen and an RBI triple from Jonathan Davis.

Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, starter Tanner Roark was unable to hold onto the big lead. The veteran starter surrendered eleven hits to an Orioles offence that seems to be heating up. Roark didn't receive any help from his defence, as the Blue Jays committed three errors leading to three unearned runs. All in all, Roark finished with 4 1/3 innings while surrendering seven total runs (four earned).

The Baltimore Orioles received most of their offence in the form of RBI doubles as Chance Sisco, Trey Mancini, and Austin Hays all drove in runs with their respective extra base hits.

The Orioles opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Mancini grounded into a double-play started by a spectacular diving play by Cavan Biggio. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Biggio was seen grabbing his shoulder immediately after the play and would have to be removed from the game. While the Blue Jays didn't have a clear status on Biggio after the game, manager Charlie Montoyo didn't seem too optimistic when asked by reporters, stating that he "deep down believes that this could be a big, big problem". The Blue Jays are expected to announce the severity of Biggio's injuring in the next while, but it will be interesting to see who will be called upon to replace the young second baseman.

The Blue Jays look to get back into the win column on Saturday afternoon after dropping the first two games of their four game series against the Baltimore Orioles. They'll turn to Matt Shoemaker as they look to right the ship.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Blue Jays Place Biggio on IL, Recall Smith

The Toronto Blue Jays got some bad news on the injury front on Saturday morning as the club announced that young second baseman Cavan Biggio is expected to miss the next 1 to 2 months with a shoulder tear suffered during the Blue Jays’ 7-6 loss against the Baltimore Orioles last night.

Biggio suffered the injury in the first inning of last night’s ballgame after making a spectacular diving grab on a Trey Mancini grounder to start a double play. The son of former Astros legend Craig Biggio had been on a roll after a slow start to the season, posting a .258 batting average with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs in 37 games this season while playing above average defence at second base. The injury represents a significant loss for the Blue Jays, who have counted on Biggio to provide a punch in their lineup all season long.

The Blue Jays announced that they have recalled infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Buffalo to take Biggio’s spot on the 26-man active roster. While Smith has only been hitting .200 in 133 at-bats with the Buffalo Bisons, he represented the closest major league ready option for the Blue Jays.

In order to make room for Smith on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays announced that they have moved infielder Travis Shaw to the 60-day injured list. Shaw is currently recovering from a shoulder separation that was suffered earlier this month.

With the absence of Biggio in the lineup, expect for manager Charlie Montoyo to use Joe Panik more frequently at second base, while Brandon Drury may get some playing time there against right handed pitching. The Blue Jays look to bounce back from two straight losses on Saturday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Grichuk Leads Blue Jays In Win Over Orioles

Randal Grichuk went deep twice and the Toronto Blue Jays picked up their first win in three games as they took down the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Grichuk lead the way for the Blue Jays, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of solo home runs and a double. The two homers represented Grichuk's 12th and 13th homers of the season as well as his fourth homer in the past three games.

The Blue Jays also got some help from the rest of the lineup, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. driving in two runs to go along with RBIs from Reese McGuire, Rowdy Tellez, and Billy McKinney. Starter Matt Shoemaker recovered from a rough start to the ballgame by turning in 6 2/3 innings of work en route to his seventh win of the season. Shoemaker surrendered three runs on seven hits.

The Orioles got off to a fast start once again, striking in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of Renato Nunez. The Orioles would add one more run in the fourth inning thanks to a booming double off the bat of catcher Chance Sisco, but that would be all for the Orioles offences as they fell to an MLB-worst 16-36.

Trent Thornton and the Toronto Blue Jays look to force a series split against the Orioles tomorrow afternoon as the two clubs square off for the fourth and final time this weekend.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Thornton Helps Jays Squeeze Past Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays forced a series split of their four game weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. Trent Thornton led the way for the Blue Jays in the pitcher's duel as they took down Kohl Stewart and the Orioles.

Thornton went seven innings for the Blue Jays, surrendering just one lone run on five hits while continuing to flaunt his swing-and-miss stuff, racking up ten strikeouts in the process. The Orioles would score their only run of the ballgame in the second inning when Rio Ruiz would come around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Richie Martin.

Oriole starter Kohl Stewart pitched well despite being handed his fourth loss of the season. Stewart worked six innings, holding the Blue Jays to just five hits. Stewart's only mistake of the ballgame was a 3-1 fastball left over the plate to Rowdy Tellez in the second inning. Tellez's eighth home run of the season would be a two-run shot that would give the Blue Jays all the run support that they would need to close out the ballgame. Ken Giles would come on in the ninth inning and record his 19th save of the season as the Blue Jays finished up their seven game home stand with a 4-3 record.

Kevin Smith got the start at shortstop for the Blue Jays as he made his MLB debut after being called up to replace the injured Cavan Biggio. Smith singled in the third inning for his first career MLB hit.

The Blue Jays get a must needed day off tomorrow before they head to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a three game series.

Game Notes
The Toronto Blue Jays kick off a road trip to wrap up the month of May with a visit to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Blue Jays played .500 ball throughout their most recent home stand and will look to pad their lead in the American League East standings.

The Rays have been decimated by injuries as of late, with five starting players hitting the injured list with injuries that are expected to require a length stay on the injured list. Thanks to these injuries, the Rays have struggles as of late, going 3-7 over their last ten games. They'll look to turn things around the Blue Jays, who have hit their stride in the month of May.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Blue Jays Hold On Late Against Rays

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up their third straight win on Tuesday night with a close 7-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Blue Jays put a stop on a late Rays rally to seal the victory.

Billy McKinney continued swinging a red-hot bat at the plate for the Blue Jays, going deep in the fourth inning for an important three-run home run. The homer marked his eighth of the season since he was called up earlier this month and raised his batting average to an astronomical .450.

Hunter Renfroe went deep twice for the Rays, including an eighth inning solo homer that brought his club to within one run. The Rays would put up a fight in the ninth inning against Blue Jays closer Ken Giles, scoring one run while advancing the tying run to second base. Unfortunately for the Rays, Giles would get Austin Meadows to chase a high fastball to close out the ball game as they dropped their eighth straight.

Chase Anderson got the start for the Blue Jays and picked up his sixth win of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. Anderson got off to a rough start, allowing the Rays to score in each of the first three innings before settling down. Ken Giles would lock down his 20th save of the season despite surrendering one run on two hits in the ninth.

The Tampa Bay Rays turned to Trevor Richards to start Tuesday night's contest after regularly scheduled starter Charlie Morton was scratched due to an undisclosed injury. Richards was roughed up by the Blue Jays to the tune of five runs on eight hits over four innings, with McKinney's three-run blast being the big blow against the young righty.

The Blue Jays will go for their fourth straight win tomorrow night at Tropicana Field as they take on the Rays in the middle game of their three game series.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Martinez, Rays Squeeze Past Jays

The Tampa Bay Rays put an end to the Toronto Blue Jays' modest three game win streak with a narrow 3-2 victory in front of their home crowd at Tropicana Field on Wednesday evening.

The Rays got a tremendous start from Ryan Yarbrough, who tossed six innings of three-hit ball, surrendering just one run. Yarbrough racked up seven strikeouts in the process as he lowered his season ERA to 2.45. Slugger Jose Martinez's two-run blast in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame as the Rays would hold on to the lead for the last four innings.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went deep with his sixth home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning to make things interesting, but the Jays would not be able to get anything going against Rays closer Nick Anderson, who picked up his 14th save of the season.

Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu was handed his fourth loss of the season, dropping his record to 3-4. The Korean southpaw pitched well, going 6 2/3 innings while surrendering three runs on seven hits -- a much better performance than when he was rocked by the Baltimore Orioles last time out. The Rays would do all of their damage in the fifth inning against Ryu, as the southpaw struggled to find the zone and ultimately surrendered three runs in the frame.

The Blue Jays and Rays go head-to-head in the rubber match of the three game series tomorrow afternoon at Tropicana Field.
