Oh Holi-Day!: Jrue's late basket lifts 76ers over Hawks
By Jaggo Smorts
With the "Reunion Game" billing that this match-up had coming in, coupled with it being an early season game, not many could have expected to see what they did last night in Atlanta. It was a game that reeked of playoff atmosphere not from the onset, but just as the whistle of the second quarter blew.
As the game clock read "0.0" at the end of the 4th quarter, it was the Philadelphia 76ers who prevailed over the Atlanta Hawks, 101-99.
This story goes back to the off-season, when the Philadelphia 76ers decided to let Lou Williams walk and he ultimately left for Atlanta. Then just over a week ago, the Sixers traded Nikola Vucevic and a 1st Round Draft Pick for Jeff Teague of Atlanta. Already, there was a little something to play for in this game for both sides.
Then, as the teams began to play with their new acquisitions, things changed. Each team had been middling to start the season, winning then losing or winning two then losing three. But, since the trade, each team had caught fire. Each reeling off four straight victories heading in to the head-to-head matchup.
The first quarter was hard fought, but both teams were obviously feeling each other out. As the 2nd progressed though, things got a bit chipper. With over seven minutes to go, Andre Iguodala drove to the hoop for a ferocious slam over Josh Smith. The slam was proceeded by what may, or may not have been, a bit of showboating by 'Dre. Josh Smith took clear exception to this and had a few words for Iguodala. From that point on, things were in high gear for each side.
Nick Young was electric in the second half, scoring 14 of the 76ers' 22 points in the 3rd quarter, a quarter which Atlanta ended with a four-point lead. The fourth quarter belonged to Jrue.
Holiday, who had been relatively dormant for the first three quarters, exploded in the fourth. He had already scored 12 of his 20 points in the quarter when he was called upon with the game on the line.
Atlanta had just tied the game up for their third straight possession, as the last three minutes off the game were mostly an exercise in who would be the first to score and then make a stop. With the game tied, and 17.2 seconds on the clock, Evan Turner inbounded to Holiday. Holiday dribbled, Lavoy Allen set the pick, but it wasn't effective. Jrue then decided he would use the crossover to get to the basket. The crossover gave him just enough room to get by Devin Harris and Holiday drove to the hoop. 6 seconds left. Holiday leaps towards the rim and is met in mid-air by Josh Smith, Jrue adjusts and with his left hand finger rolls the ball towards the hoop. It rolls around the rim once, twice and then...in!
The Sixers get the W, Hoiday is the hero, and now it's time to head home and get ready for New York.
