    September Report

    Code:
    Standings:
    [B]Red Sox: 77-56, ---, L1, 4-6[/B]
    Rays: 71-61, 5.5, W1, 7-3
    Yankees: 70-62, 6.5, W6, 8-2
    Blue Jays: 69-64, 8.0, W1, 5-5
    O's: 69-64, 8.0, L1, 2-8

The Sox will start September with a similar lead to one they've had all year, around that 4-6 games lead area.

The team will be on the road for much of the stretch run, so they'll have to keep playing solid baseball away from Fenway.

    Team News:

Julio Urias will likely make a September return to the majors once the AAA season is over. Dickey looks like he's about done and the bullpen could always use an extra arm at this time of the year. Dylan Bundy was considered, but his 6.60 ERA in AAA really takes him out of the running, which is disappointing.

Mike Zunino looks to be doing everything he can to wrest the catcher position from Gary Sanchez longer term. As expected, he's not hitting for much average, but he's already delivered in a key spot, hitting a walk-off 2-run HR in his first game since being named the primary starter.

Chris Carter, on the other hand, might be playing his way out the door. After a solid first half, he's done next to nothing after the All-Star Break. This combined with his half-hearted defense at times (despite his being in the running for the Gold Glove) really has the team wondering if they want to roll with him at first base, especially with a young and developing pitching staff.

    Player Development News:

Can the scouts gush any harder over Joey Gallo? They have just been insane in their elevations of the young slugger all year long, and it's culminated into a 99 Potential grade on him, the max possible score. This adoration of Gallo is interesting, if a bit unnerving. He's had a solid season, but nothing that would seem to warrant this level of projection. In addition, his current ability grades are just skyrocketing. He's up 11 points in vsRHP contact and 10 points in vsRHP Power.

About the only thing they don't love is Gallo's glove, they've been muted and more mixed on his defensive worth. Gallo might be better suited to LF, but the outfield, when healthy, is crowded as it is and Sano does not figure to handle Fenway's right field very well...nor does Gallo.

On the flip side of the Gallo Groupies is the Melancholy on Mateo crowd. Finally, scouts have started to think more positively on Mateo, raising their opinions of his current hit tool a bit and projecting better growth going forward. They maintain the thinking that he's a serious threat on the bases (as if 68 SB would indicate anything else). His defense hasn't been elevated...and rightly so, he's still a bit inconsistent in that regard.

The up-and-down roller coaster ride that is Mallex Smith hasn't soured scouts on the young outfielder. They are gently raising their projections on Mallex, with one scout saying that "when he's on, he flashes plus-plus in speed and hitting for average, which is also fed by his speed". Part of Mallex's problem is he hits too many flyballs - which is probably why his batting average fluctuates so much.

Perhaps the most encouraging news is that Delino DeShields, Jr. continues to get positive expectations from scouts.

"His rehab is going very well, showing very few ill effects during his recovery to this point. His track looks like it will be unaltered, just perhaps slowed a bit, " one scout noted on his report.

DeShields, Jr. remains a great Fenway fit on paper. Brilliant reads on fly balls, speed to cover ground, and has enough power to find the Monster and the gaps. To see that he's healing well is great news. A DeShields/Buxton or DeShields/Smith CF-RF combination would be very comforting to the pitching staff.

Speaking of young pitching, Taijuan Walker is continuing his progress towards being a solid #2 type pitcher. Scouts think he's learning how to use his stuff better and they like the competitiveness he shows when in trouble.

"He [Walker] is emerging into a solid do-a-lot-right type pitcher. A guy that might be just short of elite, but still a very solid, very much above average pitcher that gives a club a lot of strong innings, " one scout commented.

And no mention of improving pitchers would be complete without mentioning the improving-strongly-at-30-years-young Aroldis Chapman. His command in particular has wowed scouts all year long, and it's translating into even better results for Chapman on the field, as scary as that is. WAR has him as valuable as Kyle Schwarber who has 28 home runs and nearly a .900 OPS! That's insane for a reliever.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

Well I came to the conclusion the only way to bring a winning team to my hometown city of San Diego was to do a fantasy draft. Actually I've done them before and had a blast.

I am using the latest Live Rosters as opposed to the OSFM rosters, so some of the prospects are fictional, and I like it that way.

After the drafts and a pair of trades this is how my roster looks.

      Rotation
      1. Sonny Gray
      2. Lance McCullers
      3. Michael Wacha
      4. Jimmy Nelson
      5. CJ Wilson

      Bullpen
      Shae Simmons
      Neil Ramirez
      Jason Grilli
      Matt Thornton
      Fernando Salas
      Fernando Rodney
      Dellin Betances

      Every Day Lineup by Position
      C-Kyle Schwarber
      1B-Freddie Freeman
      2B-Starlin Castro
      SS-Carlos Correa
      3B-Brett/Wallace/Trevor Plouffe
      LF-Steven Souza jr.

      Top 50 Prospects

RHP- Sam Hutson He's a 19 year old fireballer from New Jersey who projects to be a closer in the majors

IF- Francisco Corona is a 21 year old infielder. He's a plus fielder who's developing some power in his bat. Needs to become more consistent.

OF- Carlos Morales. This 18 year old some feel could play in the bigs now. Projects as a 4 tool player. He has a plus bat, plus power, can run, and play defense, but has a below average arm. Projects to be a Left Fielder most likely at the big league level. Will play in the majors sooner rather than later.

      Other Notable Prospects
1B- Kennys Vargas Age 25 Huge Frame (6'5" 290 lbs.) Good power Prospect.
IF- Jonathan Villafuerte Age 25 No power, but puts ball in play. Versatile in the field and can run some.
OF-Byron Buxton Age 22 Highly touted prospect has yet to put it together. Some scouts feel he's regressing.
OF-Max Kepler. Age 23 Above average fielder, average bat. Projects to depth player.

      Notable Players signed to Minors
      RHP Bronson Arroyo
      RHP Tyler Wilson

Nice team - can't wait to see how they do. Looks like it could be a rather strong squad.

            Boston Stretch Run Report
Sox Up Six With 13 to Play

The Sox are in control of their destiny with some breathing room, but the last games of the year are all within the division, one series with each rival. The Rays and Jays are the teams tied at six games back, and the Sox have had little success against the Rays this year. The Jays probably won't be a picnic either.

The bats are flattening out a bit, probably tiring from the grind of the season. They will need to hang on a little longer. There will be some off days in the final week of the season.

The team as a whole has been fighting to tread water. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games. They got swept by the Jays, swept the O's, and managed a split against the Yankees in a 4-game set. The team is 9-7 so far in September.

            Sano Under Siege

Miguel Sano's run for the Triple Crown is under threat from all fronts.

Xander Bogaerts has jockeyed for position with Sano all September as both men fight to stay around the .350 mark. Bogaerts dipped below that mark, giving Sano a lead, but it was short-lived as Sano had a couple 0-fers and Xander got hot again. Right now, Bogaerts leads .353 to .347.

The home run race is as tight. Sano and Jose Abreu have been dueling for a while, and then suddenly Mike Trout comes out of nowhere to tie them both. Sano picked up HR #45 to take the lead, but he is just one ahead of Trout and Abreu.

Sano has a bit more breathing room in the RBI department, with 118, good enough for a 4 RBI lead over Trout. However, Abreu is right there with 113, Trout has 114, and then there's Matt Adams with 112 and Chris Davis with 110.

            Buxton Returns, Urias' Second Chance

Byron Buxton returns in time to help the team hold on to the AL East. He will return to RF, which will restore order to the defense and allow Trumbo to focus again on hitting as the team's DH vs LHP.

To be fair to Eibner, he was a solid surprise. He batted .302 with a home run and 3 RBI in 43 AB. He also stole a base and scored three runs. It is hard to say if this solid cup-of-coffee type appearance will be enough to get him "the last spot" on the roster, especially if DeShields, Jr. does indeed come back, but he scored some points in his favor for sure with his relief outing.

On the pitching side, Tanner Roark suffered a dislocated shoulder and will miss enough time to perhaps even miss postseason action, even on the earliest timetable for his return.

This gives Julio Urias another chance to impress. He has a 6.52 ERA at the major league level, so he'll need to string together some good stretch run outings to help his stock resume an upward trajectory with the team.

            Call-up Odd Performances

When call-ups happen, sometimes weird stuff happens as minor leaguers get a taste of the bigs during the most frantic and high-intensity time of the regular season.

Carson Fulmer can tell that tale as he recorded his first career save...while giving up the hit that nearly tied the game.

The O's were trailing 8-6 with 2-outs in the 9th. Familia put two runners on and was tiring. Farrell turned to Fulmer to try to get the last out. Andy Burns was brought in to carry the tying run as a pinch runner.

Fulmer gave up a hit to Bradley, a shot into the alley. Dahl, the runner on second, scored easily. Burns was on first and racing around the bases. The relay came in and Burns was trying to score the tying run. The relay was perfect and Burns was cut down at the plate to end the game.

Bradley, Jr. was credited with a triple and Fulmer got the save by nearly giving up a game-tying, 2-run triple. Instead, it was a game-ending, 1-run triple, thanks to the Smith-to-Russell-to-Zunino relay.

I want to start a fantasy draft franchise as opposed to a 40 man season draft. My question to all you fine folks is, when you finish the draft, almost every team carries 15 pitchers and 10 hitters .... Does this change throughout the season?

It seems so. I can't tell exactly since I'm in late September, so call-ups and stuff, but between turning trading up (I put it on 9 and left it) and roster moves, it seems to have mellowed out.

                    Sox Limp to Division Title
Sox Lose 4 of Last 5 But That's Enough

The Sox needed 159 games to clinch the division...and it's good thing the season ended when it did from how the team played down the stretch.

The team finished with a pedestrian .562 winning percentage (91 wins), but it's enough to do the deed. The lead ended up being just 2 1/2 games over the Rays.

Still, though, there's concerns if this flat play continues on. While September, good or bad, is no real indicator of postseason prospects, going just 13-14 in the month is not exactly confidence-boosting. Uneven, up-and-down play pretty much across the board is not what you want to see.

                    That Mike Trout, Though

                    Mike Trout is ridiculous.

He continued rocketing up the home run list...ending up with 50 on the year. In a completely scary development, scouts have greatly elevate their power projections and grades going forward. That is absolutely terrifying.

                    1.056 OPS
                    10.4 WAR
                    50 HR

Miguel Sano was the closest WAR to Trout...at 7.9.

                    Ridiculous.

Trout's power surge killed off Sano's Triple Crown aspirations. Trout took the RBI and HR titles. Bogaerts ended up nipping Sano for the batting title.

If Detroit and Boston both make it to the ALCS...the Sox will get to deal with Trout. Maybe he'll get the Barry Bonds treatment.

Season stats and awards coming later.

                      Team News:

The team got two players healthy in time for the playoffs. Ichiro Suzuki and Brandon Finnegan return and were added to the playoff roster. Sean Jameson and Brett Eibner were removed to make room.

Ichiro figures to play right away. Not only out of respect to a veteran who might be playing in his final postseason, but also because Byron Buxton is still that inconsistent. Sources say that Ichiro will bat 9th vs RHP and leadoff vs LHP, patrolling right field vs RHP and center field vs LHP.

Finnegan will probably join the rotation as the 4th starter, displacing Alex Reyes to the bullpen. Maeda will be the #2 starter over Taijuan Walker with Sale, of course, starting things off.

                      Player Development News:

Scouts remain impressed by the competitiveness shown by Mallex Smith.

"Mallex could have wilted with the poor start to his debut season, but he kept fighting and kept sound at the plate, and he never took his struggles to the field with him. His defense is impeccable, " one A.L. scout commented.

Consensus seems to agree as the young center fielder has seen his grade steadily move forward. He's still largely a singles hitter with great defense, but maybe with a few more line drives, the scouts are looking at more doubles and triples in the future...especially at Fenway.

No one is ready to pull out the "B" word on Buxton. No, not that "B" word...but the word "bust".
Buxton continues to disappoint at the plate, no other way to describe a .630 OPS, but scouts remain hopeful that better days are to come.

"Best thing for Buxton is either DeShields, Jr. comes back fine or Ichiro sticks around, because then Bryon can keep being refined in AAA, " one scout commented.

Speaking of disappointing debuts...enter Gary Sanchez.
His season was terrible at the plate, so much so he was benched for Zunino...who might have been a notch better. If veteran A.J. Pierzynski returns for another season...he probably will have the inside track to starting at the position...or perhaps the team with grit their teeth and play Schwarber behind the plate...maybe play the Mike Piazza card.

Scouts are also starting to wonder about Sanchez. They haven't lowered their opinions of his potential...yet...but they are not impressed with anything he did at the plate. Behind the plate, they are more positive...but that just spells "defensive replacement".

Jorge Mateo is getting a little more love for his bat. Hitting .300 will bring people around, even if slowly.
Looks like more are thinking his contact skills are truly on the upswing with actual base hits.

"He's not just drag bunts. When I saw him near .300 and fast...I figured he's just getting away with bunts or a ton of infield hits, but no he hits more line drives and hard grounders through than I thought, " noted one evaluator.

Perhaps more encouraging is his defense is improving. Kind of. The arm is getting better and the hands are getting better...but it's not much.

"I think he's a 3B or a 2B, honestly. Probably 2B, especially on this team with Gallo the Great at 3B and he hits like a 2B, " one scout commented.

That would be a problem. Addison Russell is doing fine at 2B, so no desire to supplant him. Gallo has no where to go...the outfield is occupied. So Mateo is "stuck" at SS. Plus, he's the best SS on the team - and that's right now, not counting upside. Hopefully, Mateo can turn that speed into quickness and range at the position.

                        Sox and Astros Split
Each Wins One as LDS Shifts to Houston

Game 1 was a bit of a duel between Chris Sale and AL Cy Young Winner Gerritt Cole.

The Sox struck first with a 2-run HR from Carter that went 454 feet. However, Cole would be nearly perfect from that point on, including not giving up any walks.

Sale gradually let the Astros in the game and they took a 4-3 lead to the 9th.

Sano tied the game in the bottom half of the 9th with a HR over the Monster, but the Astros answered back to take a 5-4 lead in the 10th, which would be the final score.

Game 2 was weird. The Sox couldn't get many hits against Alex Wood, but they racked up the walks. They picked up six in 5 2/3 innings from Wood.

The Sox picked up the first run in the 5th on small ball. They worked two walks. Mateo bunted them to second and third. Ichiro grounded out to SS to drive in the runner from third.

Three more scored when Zunino came up big with a 2-RBI single the next inning. Three more on a Schwarber 3-run HR in the seventh. 7 runs on 5 hits.

The Sox would tack on a couple more...but Maeda didn't need them. He threw a 4-hit shutout.

In all, the Sox walked 8 times after getting none the prior game. Gallo was passed four times. 0-for-0, 3 R, 4 BB was his line.

Fun fact: Astros' pitching was a "Wood"en affair. Three of the four pitchers used all had the last name "Wood".

This team is insane!! Apparently we only lose on Fridays too! Strausburg is 3-0 and finally has given up a run...Jose Bautista has played very much like a 1st round pick, despite being picked in the 4th. Through 12 games Bautista is hitting .459 with 6 Hr & 17 rbis. (At this rate he is on pace for 78 Hr & 221 rbi)

Been a while since I checked in. Make no mistake this has been my go to franchise all season thus far.

We just finished taking 3/4 from the first place AL Central Royals and we are now 2.5 games ahead of a tough Reds team in the NL Central.

We have a huge homestand heading into the All-Star break. It is now July 1st and as promised once I get to the All-Star game I will have a massive update with player stats, league leaders and both All-Star rosters.

The Matheny Manifeso rolls on. I also stream almost every single game.

The Sox advanced to the ALCS in four games and will indeed see Mike Trout and the Tigers, who swept their series and figure to be well rested.

Games 3 and 4 featured strong outings from Sox starters to lead the way.

In the third game, Taijuan Walker went 6 strong innings, striking out ten batters in the process, to help the Sox out to a big lead. The game turned into a blowout in the 7th as the Sox started the inning with back-to-back-to-back HR and then tacked on three more runs to take a 7-1 lead. The bats kept it going until the final score of 11-4.

In the fourth game, Brandon Finnegan had a stellar outing in his first back from his DL stint. He posted up 8 innings of work and allowed just 1 run. Not quite as much offense from the Sox bats as they scored just three times to hold a 3-1 lead in the 9th. The Astros picked up one against Familia but they would get no closer. Sox won the game 3-2 and the series 3-1.

Sale will start things off in the ALCS against the Tigers at Comerica Park.
