Notes: The Red Sox are doing enough to stay in first place, but it's still not pretty on most days. The pitching staff is trying to lead the way in the early going and the offense has been heavily dependent on Gallo's hot start.

    Team Stats Leaders:

    Batting Avg:
    Sano, .321
    Piscotty, .315
    Trumbo, .311

    HR:
    Gallo, 11
    Schwarber, 6
    Sano, Trumbo, 4

    RBI:
    Gallo, 27
    Schwarber, 16
    Trumbo, Piscotty, 12

    OBP:
    Sano, .441
    Trumbo, .400
    Piscotty, .373

    SLG:
    Sano, .821
    Gallo, .707
    Schwarber, .606

    SB:
    DeShields, Jr, 8
    Mateo, 5
    Russell, Buxton, 2

    ERA:
    Chapman, 1.08
    Walker, 2.43
    Weaver, 2.52

Notes: Sano is still on very early season numbers as he's just now returned from his injury, so that makes him look like the key player. But it's really been Gallo carrying the load. Schwarber has heated up lately, which is good to see, and Piscotty has been a nice addition at the #2 spot in the lineup so far.

The speedsters have been struggling. DeShields, Jr is at least taking walks so he's getting on base decently despite batting .220, but Mateo has come out slowly as has Buxton.

    Prospects and Player Development:

SP Alex Reyes is looked solid in the opening month. He's got his ERA at 3.66 and has just over 9 K/9 rate. Scouts are still waiting to see if he can keep it going, but that's an encouraging sign.

SP Carson Fulmer has blown everyone away in April as he posted a 1.50 ERA for the month with 41 Ks in 36 innings of work. Like Reyes, everyone is waiting for some more sample size, but he could leapfrog Reyes on the scouting charts if this keeps up.

Scouts are positive on catcher Gary Sanchez after the embattled prospect put up a .360 batting average in April. Scouts feel this is the start of him coming around as a hitter.

SP Ken Kojima's first month was a mixed bag. The control has been there as expected, but the results have not been as hoped. He has a 3.90 ERA and more concerning a 1.50 WHIP. Since he's not giving up many walks, it means he's getting torched for hits. That may even out, but it's a worrying sign.

SP Kodi Medeiros was strong, which is especially encouraging after his injury last season. He has a 3.38 ERA and 22 Ks in 24 innings of work. Command remains the question mark as he has 10 walks in those innings and a 1.42 WHIP. Still, a positive start for the 20-year-old.

    Scouting News:

The Red Sox continue investing heavily in scouting the globe for talent. So far, here's how the team's top of the board looks like.

    1. SP Hitoki Kaneko, 18 - Scouts are extremely impressed by how polished this young prospect is looking. He has an advanced repertoire and so far looks like he can show plus velocity and movement. His approach is to give hitters a diverse offering of pitches. He has five pitches, all of them sitting at different speeds and showing different break.

    2. C Kevin Cervantes, 21 - Kevin is looking to be an offensive catcher that has a very strong hit tool. He looks like a possible .300+ hitter year after year. Defensively, he's good at receiving, but the arm will leave something to be desired.

    3. CP Jae Kang, 22 - Jae is looking like a ready-now closer equipped with a big time rising fastball, a split that drops off the table, and the command to use them and the rest of his pitches well. For added fun, he's a switch hitter.

    4. SP Bruno Ozuna, 19 - Bruno looks like the kind of kid where the whole will be greater than the sum of his parts. He doesn't look to do anything exceptional but everything he has is solid. He does show the potential for being a workhorse as well as developing a borderline plus-plus fastball if things work out for him. His injury history is a concern, however. Shoulder troubles in particular have hit him.

    5. SP Luis Vazquez, 21 - Luis is an interesting pitcher. He throws with more velocity than average, reaching around 93-95 steadily with his fastball, and has a slider and curve with good movement, but somehow it doesn't translate into strikeouts. He does show good command and deception with his delivery, but that would seem to increase, not decrease, his K totals. He could develop into a good defender who is active in fielding his position.

        End Of Season

The Reds finished the season with a record of 103-59. That was good enough for the best record in baseball and a division crown. Stephen Strasburg (25-5 2.03) won the CY Young & MVP award for the national league. Greg Holland (64sv) earned Reliever Of The Year Honors.

        Standings
        ALE: Yankees 96-66
        ALC: Twins 86-76
        ALW: A's 89-73
AL WC 1: White Sox 84-79
        AL WC 2: Rangers 83-79

        NLE: Marlins 89-73
        NLC: Reds 103-59
        NLW: Rockies 92-70
        NL WC 1: Padres 91-71
        NL WC 2: Nats 88-74

Rookie shortstop, Dansby Swanson, was moved into the 2 hole to begin September, and responded by hitting 6 of his 10 hrs in the month. Swanson looks to be a legitimate candidate for a spot in the top three of the order for years to come.

A.J. Pollock has continued to shine. He hit 32 hr's while batting 3rd and accompanied the home runs with a .312 average and 32 sb. With Jose Bautista unlikely to return, the power showing up has been a welcome development.

Rookie phenom Michael Fulmer was nothing short of fantastic, going 8-2 since his call up. Fulmer struck out 87 in 92 innings, and pitched to a 3.12 era.

A.J. Reed was a major disappointment, hitting below .225 since being called up. The rumors are circulating that Reed may be paired with another prospect and shopped this offseason in return for a Corner Infielder or Corner Outfielder.

Chris Tillman & Rich hill struggled down the stretch. Hill struggled to the point that his era ended at 4.12 and saw his w/l record end at 12-12. Tillman pitched effectively (a 3.12 era) but was burned by a lack of run support in the second half.

A surprising 14-8 record out of Logan Verrett coupled with a mid 3 era have all but ensured a return for the consitant yet unspectacular right Hander.

Hills woes & Fulmers dominance have created a shift in the playoff Rotation.

The rotation will be as follows as the Reds look to complete a strong season with a World Series crown:
        Strasburg
        Tillman
        Fulmer
        Verrett/Hill

        Playoffs
The Nationals beat the Padres at home in the wild card game. This may have came as a suprise as the Padres looked to be shoe ins to win the NL West all year. August injuries to Matt Harvey & Buster Posey for the remainder of the season devastated the Padres.

In game 1 of the NLDS, Stephen Strasburg faced off against Shelby Miller.

Strasburg was surprisingly ineffective, giving up 5 runs in 7 innings. Two 2-run hr to Adrian Gonzalez. Strasburg was pulled in the bottom of the 7th for a pinch hitter as the Reds were able to take the lead scoring 2 runs to make it 6-5. Andrew Miller shut it down in the 8th. The Reds would score 3 more
Runs. And the final score ended at 9-6.

The Reds are confident that Strasburg was just unlucky, and isn't tired after such a dominate regular season.

        Next Up
The Reds lead the series 1-0

GM 2: Chris Tillman faces off against NL ROY Kaenta Maeada in Cincy in game 2.

GM 3: Michael Fulmer will face off against Washingtons ace - Gerrit Cole in Washington.

        GM 4: TBD vs TBD
        GM 5: TBD vs TBD

          Injury News

In the second inning of game 3 of the series (Reds lead 2-0). Dansby Swanson was pulled from the game with an oblique strain. The trainers are assuming a few days, but that could be a huge problem in the playoffs. Phil Gosselin will be starting at SS in Swansons abscene.

            4-2 Victory Reds sweep series!

Michael Fulmer showed yet again he belongs in the show. After allowing 2 runs, and settling down to strand 2 runners on 2/3 in the second, Fulmer kept the score the same before being pulled in the 8th. Fulmers line ended up being 7ip 6h 8k/1bb, while earning the victory. Strickland & Miller shared the 8th before Greg Holland worked around a few hits to earn his first save of the season.

            Injury News

No news is good news. Turns out it was just a strain so Swanson will be in the lineup against the Rockies. The Rockies knocked the Marlins out of the playoffs thanks to having Mike Trout & Michael Brantley entrenched as there 3-4 hitters.

            MATCHUPS

Series against the Rockies is tied 1-1 as the series moves to Colorado.

Hunter Strickland (awful) and Jose Bautista (not hitting/fielding) are making roster decisions easy for the offseason...

                Reds preview
Stephen Strasburg has continued his dominance into the post season, pitching to a 3-0 record with a 2.74 era 0.87 whip and 23k in 23 innings.
Michael Fulmer has been the only other reliable starter with a 2.61 era in 10.1 ip.

Hunter Strickland (0-1) 10.13 era has lost his role as set up man in favor of Luke Hochevar (2-0) 1.80 era. Andrew Miller & Greg Holland have continued to dominate during the post season, with neither allowing a run.

The offense is another story all together. Ian Kinsler (.293 1hr 8rbi) and Dansby Swanson (.289 3 rbis) are keeping things going at the top of the lineup. A.J. Pollock has started hitting, but has a ln awful avg of just .231 with no Hr out of the 3 hole.

Jose Bautista (.118 2hr 3rbi) has been moved down to 6th in the order.

Justin Turner (.514 4rbi) is now hitting fourth, and looks to be showing the type of clutch hitting that will hopefully result in a return to Cincy next season.

Boog Powell (.391 3rbi) in the 8 hole is showing everyone he deserves to stay in Cincy.

                Series outlook

The Reds have home field advantage and will send Stephen Strasburg (GM1) and Chris Tillman (GM2) to the mound to face off against Dallas Keuchle (GM1) and Michael Wacha (GM2) before heading to Oakland for atleast 2 games.

                  The bats awaken

The Reds bats came alive at home, en route to an 11-0 victory.

Strasburg was fantastic again, but was pulled after the 6th, with the score at 10-0. Strasburg allowed 5 hits and struck out 8 while earning the victory.

A.J. Pollock (3-5 2rbi) and Jose Bautista (3-4 2 Hr 4 rbi) showed some promise. This was Bautistas second multi Hr game of the post season.

The Reds chased A's starter Dallas Keuchle in the 4th, as Oakland went on to send 3 more pitchers to the mound in game one.

Hopefully the Reds haven't used all the offense the club had left at once.

                    Reds Lead Series 2-0

Chris Tillman was unspectacular yet again. A qualifying offer seems to be more likely to my be extended to Tillman.

Dylan Bundy pitched 2 innings of 1 hit ball to secure the victory as Andrew Miller and Greg Holland locked down the final 2 innings.

Dansby Swanson has been flat out amazing in the post season, hitting .326 with 4 rbi and 8sb.

The Reds pulled off a Sweep of the A's thanks to Stephen Strasburg being out of this world!! Andrew Miller and Greg Holland were just flat out nasty all post season, allowing no runs and locking down the backend of games.

                        Offseason Outlook

Despite winning the World Series, the Reds have already made some major changes. Dave Roberts has been hired to be the manager of the World Series champs.

Chris Tillman has been brought back on a 1 year deal worth 3 million, which was what he was rumored to be looking for in his final year of arbitration.

GM Joe Smith decided to spend a little upfront, and locked up Michael Fulmer for the next 7 years, which includes his 1st year of Free Agent eligibility. The deal was worth 32.9 million over 7 years, not a bad haul for a pitcher with only 14 career starts to his name.

                        Resigned Reds Of Note
RP Luke Hocheaver 1 year / 7 million
CP Greg Holland 1 year / 7.2 million (agreed to a role in the bullpen)
                        1B A.J. Reed 3 years / 2.70 million
                        2B/UTL Phil Gosselin 3 years / 3.90 million
LF Boog Powell 3 years / 1.80 million
RF Jake Marisnick 4 years / 7.2 million

                        Free Agents Of Note
                        CP Wade Davis
                        CP Kenley Jensen
                        1B Edwin Encarnacion
                        3B Luis Valbuena
                        SS Erick Aybar

                        Rumor Mill
The Reds are not expected to bring back Jose Bautista, Rich Hill, or Jason Castro. The team is reportedly in talks to bring back veteran backstop Nick Hundley to serve as a platoon partner & mentor for the youngster Carson Kelly.

Hunter Strickland is said to be on the trading block, as he lost favor with the front office over the later half of the season.

A.J. Reed has been said to be available for the right package.

The Reds are said to be in contact with free agent closer Wade Davis. This would come as a shock to many fans, as Greg Holland was lights out and has returned to the team.

Off-Season Complete - Opening Day Preview

Many fans are complaining that the defending World Series Champs did not do enough in the off season. An off season that saw Jose Bautista, Jason Castro, and Rich Hill exit via free agency, and no "Big Names" return.

The Reds focused on the future, and spent some money locking up Starting Pitcher Michael Fulmer (7 years / 32.9 mil), as well as rewarding Jake Marisnick with a 4 year / 7.2 million dollar contract that will keep him in a Red's uniform for the foreseeable future.

                          Key Losses
                          RF - Jose Bautista
SP- Rich Hill (Remains Free Agent)
C- Jason Castro (Signed w/ rival Cubs)
                          Reds Additions
SP: Tom Koehler - The 30 year old right hander has the power and movement on his pitches to really make a difference. Koehler's biggest problem has always been his control. Koehler slots in as the Red's #3 starter. Signed to a 1 year / 2 mil contract, with a year of Arbitration left.
SP: Bud Norris - The 32 Year old Norris will serve as a depth piece, and start the season off in AAA. 1 year / 2.5 mil
SP: Jarrod Parker - The 28 year old former Oakland A was signed with the hope that the Reds organization will be able to help him reach his potential, though at this point he may be best suited for a relief role. Starting in AAA, signed to a 1 year / 3.4 mil contract with 2 years of Arbitration left.
RP: Will Smith - The 27 year old southpaw will no longer be closing games. Smith signed a 2 year deal with the Reds, and will take over the now retired Matt Thornton's role in the bullpen.
RP: Liam Hendricks - Hendricks signed a 1 year deal worth 2 mil, and comes with 2 years of control. Hendricks will slot into the now departed Hunter Strickland's middle relief role.
1B/UTL: Kelly Johnson - Johnson serves as minor league depth & leadership. 1 year / 630k

                          Notable Transactions
Edwin Encarnacion 2 yr / 14 mil - Cubs - The injured Encarnacion is behind Prince Fielder at 1b, and young standout Brandon Drury at 3B, with Matt Holliday at LF. It will be interesting to see how Joe Maddon works Encarnacion into the lineup.
Jason Castro 2yr / 12 mil - Cubs - The former Red will serve as backup to Travis d'Arnaud.
                          Wade Davis 7 yr / 9.72 AAV - Twins
                          Kenley Jansen 7 yr / 10.23 AAV - Yankees
                          Jose Bautista 1 yr / 9.43 - Indians

                          BIG TRADES
The Diamondbacks acquired 1B Chris Davis from the Tigers in exchange for 3B Mike Moustakis & SS Raul Mondesi.
The Yankees acquired SP Noah Syndergard from the Royals in exchange for 2B D.J. LeMaieu & SP Lucas Giolito
The Diamonbacks also acquired 2B Ben Zobrist (Do not recall for whom or from what team)
The Reds sent RP Hunter Strickland to the Rangers in Exchange for LF Josh Hamilton.

Wow, those are some big trades. Yankees mean business with that one lol.

And the Tigers, man I hope they have infield depth. Those are some serious pieces to give up for a 1B/DH.

                              OPENING DAY

The Reds are set to take on the San Diego Padres in a 3 game series at home. Here's the lineup set by manager Dave Roberts.

                              2B: Ian Kinsler (R)
                              SS: Dansby Swanson (R)
                              CF: A.J. Pollock (R)
                              RF: Josh Hamilton (L)
                              3B: Justin Turner (R)
                              1B: A.J. Reed (L)
                              C: Nick Hundley (R)
                              LF: Boog Powell (L)
                              ----Pitcher---

GM Joe Smith had this to say when asked about his expectations for this year - "I know a lot of fans are upset / questioning how this off season went, and I can understand why. Joey Bats was a fan favorite, and we did lose out on some of the bigger name free agents. Ownership has assured me that we have plenty of money left in the budget if a deal arises. As far as this years team is concerned, I am excited. We brought in Dave Roberts to lead the team, and signed him to a 3 year deal. A lot of the moves we made in the off season were more centered around the long term success of this franchise.

                              Prospect Outlook

SP Sean Newcomb: Newcomb has reached top 50 status in the Minors. His stamina and moxy have progressed as has his velocity, look for Newcomb to crack the majors sometime this year. ( 69 ovr / A pot)

SP Brady Rogers: Rogers represented the Reds in the futures game last year and continued his strong showing in the minors. The 26 year old is a sure fire bet to be looked at in case of an injury. ( 71 ovr / B pot)

SP Paul Carew: 2016 Draftee Paul Carew will start his profesional career in AA. Carew has 5th starter written all over him. With a 92 stamina rating, and 4 pitches (to include a sinker) that sit from 82-91 mph. (72 ovr / C pot)

C Carson Kelly: Kelly's defense has somehow gotten better over the last year. His contact has also improved, but scouts feel as he should spend a little more time in the minors working on being at least a decent major league hitter before getting the call to the show. (69 ovr / C pot)

1B Tommy Joseph: Joseph's bat has kept producing, but he seems to be blocked at the major league level. Rumors have swirled that if a team comes calling in a trade, Joseph will be on their short list. (67 ovr / B pot)

3B Ray Nash: 2016 Draftee Ray Nash will see immideate action at the major league level. His hit tool and plate discipline rivals that of some major leagers. Nash is not known for his defense and looks to see much of his action as a pinch hitter / dh for the reds. (70 ovr / D pot)

SS Rafeal Sierra: 2016 Draftee Rafeal Sierra will start the season at AAA. The 20 year old righty as no problems making contact, and has a great set of wheels on him. Look for Sierra to improve his defense and maybe prove to be the long term replacement for Ian Kinsler in 2018. (72 ovr / D pot)

SS Kevin Newman: Newman will look to improve his overall game in AA. (56 ovr / B pot)

LF Taylor Motter: Motter took the news hard when he learned he would be starting the season in AAA after spending the entire season with the Reds. The ultiliy man will look to improve his bat skills, knowing he will be the first one called upon in the event of an injury to the major league club. (72 ovr / B pot)

LF Derek Fisher: The 23 year old is still raw. Fisher will continue to work on his overall game in AA. (56 ovr / B pot)

CF Clint Frazier: Scouts have cooled on Fraziers cieling and as a result have dropped his potential. Still, with a little seasoning in the minors, Frazier looks to be at the very least a competant Major Leaguer. (65 ovr/ B pot)

RF Steven Noseworthy: 2016 Draftee Noseworthy will look to refine his game in AA. (52 ovr / B pot)

The Yankees seem to be still stung after having the best record in the Majors last year, and being swept by the A's. There rotation now looks like this:
Syndergaard/Kluber/Cobb/Porcelle(cy young)/McCarthy...With Kenley Jansen being set up by Jeurys Familia & Ken Giles. Not to mention Bryce Harper batting 3rd!.

Chris Davis to the D-Backs really makes that team scary. Jake Arrieta / Sonny Gray / Brian McCann / Chris Davis / Ben Zobrist / Luis Valbuena / Kevin Pillar & Jay Bruce. Looks like they dont plan on missing the post season again!
