I like the rewriting logic, like the new menus.

I just want new features. Scouting and developing is SUCH a huge part of baseball, I wish there was more focus on that...ways to develop diamonds in the rough.

Stat tracking and sabermetrics is ingrained in baseball too. I want see a guys line of AVG/OBP/OPS, see a pitcher's WHIP, LD% or k/BB ratio...what about projected WAR versus these letter grades of potential?

I'm just...it strikes me that they're fine tuning franchise essentially and not expanding it. I'm one guy and I have so many ideas that is just....well, baseball.

I think the reason there aren't more advanced stats is the fact that not everyone understands them or knows what they mean. Sabermetrics is huge these days, but not everyone understands it or how it works.

May also be difficult to calculate the way the logic in the game is set up as well.

I think it's not so much that he was excited, but like he's trying to oversell how cool broccoli is so his kid will eat it. If I act really excited about it, they'll like it!! DD is dumb in my estimation. I'm sure there are folks who love it but I'm not one of them. To me it's an absolute waste and takes away from traditional core modes that baseball fans want. Just think how far along Franchise mode would be if they didn't waste time or resources on DD.

I could care less about franchise because I'm an RTTS & DD guy but what they showed on the stream may just get me to play it this year. I really like the new look.

To me, franchise looks very in depth. I don't understand what more they can add besides relocation & build your own franchise/stadium. Is that what people want? I'm genuinely asking. I remember they had it where you can set prices for tickets & hot dogs, is that what people want?

There are dozens of wish lists made every year about this exact thing...here's a taste of a fraction of the things we've posted about/asked for over the years...

*rotating interleague schedules (so you don't play the exact same teams every season)...custom schedules so you can remove interleague play and play 154 game seasons if you feel like it...All-Star Games where players accurately wear their team jersey

*expansion mode/expansion draft/create-a-stadium/relocation/jersey-logo designer in franchise mode...divisional realignments

*more than 90 roster slots in your organization as real MLB teams have MLB, AAA, AA, A+, A, low A, rookie, DSL 1, DSL 2, VSL etc and closer to 200 players in the organization so you don't have to pick and choose...Mexican Leagues, Winter Ball, Arizona Fall League, WBC and/or Caribbean Series

*learn a new pitch, learn a new position (both of which happen constantly in real life), improve non-linearly, get worse suddenly Rick Ankiel-style

*a scouting mode that gives you detail about the draftees (which guys are likely RPs with max effort deliveries? which guys have attitude problems? what kind of stats and showcases do they have under their belts? what kind of competition did they face in generating those stats? what is the slot value? what is their "ask"? can you negotiate with them to go pro/not go pro?)...a scouting mode that doesn't subtract half of the guys you scouted as they vanish..poof..and one that doesn't put 25 year olds in the draft pool

*a draft that has more than 7 rounds in it...one where different levels of talent have different contract demands...the cat and mouse "will he sign for this?" and "senior signs" and under-slot/over-slot politics is 100% unaccounted for in the game

*a free agent system where you can get creative with contracts and have more control over the terms/bonuses/options etc like in real life...flat contracts...de-escalating contracts...short-term pillow contracts...bonuses for this many PA's or finish in top x in Cy Young voting...certain penny-pinching market teams don't go out and give Jose Altuve the godfather offer...in-season contract extensions and offseason deals that buy out arb years...deferred money...partial NTCs...posting players from foreign leagues

*a trading system where you can work complex deals (multi-team, cash involved, PTBNL) and teams can have actual personalities and motivations. Right now teams do not behave according to any particular idiom (contend/rebuild) despite there being a bit of text that tells you what team is supposed to be what...teams changing personality as their status changes over the season..teams with personalities that prefer certain archetypes of players...teams who like pitchers to throw sliders or curveballs...teams who prefer OBP or power etc

*improved logic at every level of the franchise (pitching staffs...4-man and 6-man rotation options...sabermetric/traditional lineups...teams making sense with who they put on the trade block and what they're seeking...in-game bullpen and starting pitcher management logic...better handedness logic...not burning the backup catcher so easily logic...sensical playoff pitcher stamina and so forth that doesn't totally nerf your ace's ability to turn around on short rest)...cpu logic that isn't so OVR-crazy

*a coaching staff that actually has tendencies and matters...a bench coach...the ability to edit coaches...more realistic options to hire when firing your manager

*winter meetings that actually exist and maybe some mini-mode based on that...trade talks and give/take with other GMs...more interactivity between teams

*progression/regression logic that doesn't make age 32 players and up a terrible investment...progression/regression to things like stamina so you don't have to make an 18 year old Roger Clemens because things like stamina, arm strength, and pitch types etc don't progress at all...not letting us "train" players in untrainable areas, like pitcher stamina...separation of injury prone-ness from durability

*a financial/front office system that rewards you for managing a team successfully...ability to make upgrades to staff and equipment, stadium and personnel...the ability to try different methods and philosophies for training, recovery, and injury prevention...ways to spend your sponsorship and excess money

*"better" injuries that approximate real life instead of fractured skulls and torn ACLs and broken arms/legs...relapses from injury...chronic injuries that pop up with the same player...an actual injury history built into the player card and that factors into logic when that player is valued/signed/traded

*catchers that can frame and manage a pitching staff, that can steal strikes and add value in other ways than wearing a chest protector

*editable everything...the ability to add in new player to a franchise as it goes...the ability to "edit all"...a better way to edit attributes globally

*home and away equipment options

*get rid of the weekly stuff and just give us season totals for budgets

*being able to track minor league stats from year to year without having to pull out a pen and pad...previous years of minor league stats simply going onto the player card would be swell

But, basically hot dog prices.

My thoughts on the new franchise mode:

I think the retro mode in franchise wasn't necessary. I wish they put in 4 trade slots. I wish they added the little stuff about running the team store and concessions and selling tickets.

I don't know how much else they can really add. given the new logic for retirement (Thank god), and the lineup logic that it will drastically improve the game. The new screens look great, i'm a baseball nut and even i'd forget about setting 40 man rosters or doing some stuff so it really helps it and the fact that winter meetings actually have some meaning. wish they put more focus on sorting by mlb service time.

Overall with the new improvements to the gameplay and more reactive animations then the game will be better than last season. personally i think they ruined rtts so i was hopeful they put more effort into franchise.

This is exactly right, and the problem with this is that stats used in the game are mainly mainstreamed, I mean look at the commentary all they talk about before a pitchers start is ERA this ERA that. soon as someones ERA 5 they will talk about how much he sucks. or how good he is if his ERA is low in the 3s. its to simple.

Scouts and recruitment don't even look at ERA these days, this is why Lance Lynn took so long to sign.

same with hitters its average this average oh he has a average in the 220s he is struggling!1 they will say even if he is a power hitter, it makes me wanna turn the stupid commentary off how they focus only on those 2 stats.. OBP Whip and BAbit are more important

That was very well put, thank you! The great thing is they already have the ability to set everything to "auto" so as they add this stuff in, those who just want to control hot dog prices and play games can do just that. And those of us who want to quit our jobs and run a virtual baseball franchise can go "full manual" and have that immersive experience. Here's to hoping phases is the first phase of a new in-depth mode.

My feelings exactly. I’m a DD guy but with those logic changes(dumb CPU AI drove me away from franchise) I think I’m gonna give t another shot. To me it seemed like they did a lot of work under the hood 🤷🏻*♂️

Just disappointed...unfortunately already paid and pre-ordered on psn so I'll pick up mlb 18. But think it'll be my last one until they properly revamp rtts and franchise.

Let's be honest they haven't given us any of the major things we've requested.

Rtts...sure they redid the progression system but how long have we requested something to do with your money that we actually get paid...making it worthwhile getting a big contract etc. Making the mode more immersive. And no they didn't remove micro transactions...just made it more of a necessity for people wanting a 99 rated player to have to buy equipment.

Franchise...I want to be able to upgrade my stadium, the seats of the stadium. Add seats to my stadium...alter ticket prices maybe ever per section. Set parking prices. I want to be able to add food vendors, restaurants and set prices for all of that. I want the power to choose the grass pattern of my field and manage the condition of the over the season. Manage sponsorship's and their placements in my stadium.

Oh wait...all those franchise features were in MLB 07 The Show. Why have it been taken out?

That is the frustration...we had a much more in depth franchise more than a decade ago...and now we must be happy getting scraps every year for improvements that are being sold as "Look at our completely revamped franchise mode"...

It just doesn't sit well with me sorry.

I should've known this was coming when I read the blog...when they started off explaining what franchise mode is then you know you are in trouble. Meaningless filler to stretch out the article.

Man I use to tell everyone The Show and NBA 2k are by far the best representations of their respective sports. The attention to detail far outdoes any other sport franchise etc. I had so much faith in SDS and can remember to this day when I saw this trailer of MLB 09 The Show:

It blew me away...how can a development company do so much in an one year cycle.

These days it just isn't there anymore imo. The Show has fallen behind FIFA, Madden, NBA 2K in regards to graphics and have fallen so far behind 2K in regards to overall quality and franchise mode as well as total package. I even rate FIFA and Madden's franchise/career modes over The Show's. Why has this happened? I get they have a smaller team, but they also have only one platform to develop for...Sony resources etc.

Let's be honest...since MLB 2K was cancelled the annual improvements to The Show has drastically become less. They are definitely playing it safe and since having no competition there just isn't the drive to put the best game out anymore. It happened to Madden and now is happening to The Show. FIFA and NBA 2K...although not great competition, both have competition and they simply can't rest on their laurels. I really hope someone else enters baseball gaming as we are getting ripped off currently imo.

I'm just not as excited for The Show to come out like I use to...and it sucks. How the mighty have fallen...

Madden's franchise mode is far from perfect for sure but imo they are at least trying harder than SDS currently is.

What I don't understand is why people are taking it easy on SDS whilst if EA dares do anything wrong with Madden the end of the world is upon us. I get SDS has a better track record but let's be honest it hasn't been great since the current console generation.

If you really think about it...it is actually quite shocking that we still don't have proper stat tracking (considering baseball is all about stats), only a handful of MLB records etc. etc. similar to what we had on PS3. NBA 2K has game, season and all time records for each team as well as for the NBA. But we must be content with the bare minimum on The Show. How difficult can it be to add more? Breaking records are my primary motivation to play Rtts.

Your missing my point. Everyone is starting to throw the small development team thing around with limited resources. A marketing campaign featuring MLB stars are by no means a cheap option.

A decade ago they didn't have MLB stars as part of their marketing at all and the game did just fine...imo was a better product back then as well.

Pedroia was doing their ads a decade ago...
