            Chicago Cubs Carryover Franchise

With the 2018 season and NLCS loss behind them, the Cubs went into the offseason looking to add some depth to the roster, they also had to take care of their own core as well. It was quite the busy off-season for the Cubs

            The following players were re-signed:

            Albert Almora- 2yr 1.76m
            Kris Bryant -5yr 100m
            Kyle Hendricks- 5 yr 40m
            Cole Hamels- 2yr 13m
            Carl Edwards- 5yr 10.5m
            Mike Montgomery- 5yr 11m

Pedro Strop chose Free agency and didn't accept the Cubs 2yr-24m, He signed with the Rangers for the same deal and was then dealt to the Rockies.

Justin Wilson didn't accept the qualifying offer and has signed with the Blue Jays.

The Cubs now needed to fill those 2 voids in the pen , they signed Cody Allen to a 4yr, 38m deal and brought in the crafty left hander Zach Duke on a 1yr 2m deal.

The Cubs also added a familiar face and signed OF Jon Jay to a 1yr 1.8m deal. They also signed FA's C Stephen Vogt (1yr 680k), SS Wilmer Difo (3yr 4.6m)

The Cubs had 5 Players going to Arbitration and won only one.
DeShields won and was awarded 2.89m
Schwarber won and was awarded 2.3m
Baez won and was awarded 7.5m
Profar won and was awarded 3.39
Contreras lost and was awarded 2.24m

The Cubs were now up against the budget and into the luxury tax!

Spring training saw Kyle Hendricks go down with a fractured wrist and will miss 2-3 months. The Cubs hands are tied with no room left in the budget and are forced to give Tyler Chatwood a shot in the rotation. Rumours have it that Ben Zobrist is on the Trading block. The Cubs are looking to shed his 4.8m salary and get some breathing room for future moves. Should be an exciting 2019!

Cardinals send Elizer Alvarez to Blue Jays for Drew Harrington

The Cardinals have made a move that most thought would've happened prior to Spring Training after the Cardinals re-signed Kolten Wong to a 4 year deal. The Cardinals will send Elizer Alvarez to the Blue Jays for LHP Drew Harrington. The Cardinals will also send a PTBNL

Elizer Alvarez was projected to take over everyday second base duties, but injuries have plaqued him the last couple of years, thus prompting the Cardinals to re-sign Wong this offseason. Alvarez when not injured as been great, leading the Pacific Coast League in batting average last season despite being injured. Alvarez who is out of options, likely wouldn't have passed waivers. He will most likely take over the everyday second base job in Toronto.

Drew Harrington is a former Cardinal, who was lost in the Rule 5 draft due to a front office mistake. The lefty has some big league experience with the Blue Jays and will compete for a rotation spot this year. If not, he'll provide depth to a pitching staff desperate for quality left handed pitchers. If Harrington doesn't crack the rotation in limited spring action with the Cards, he will most likely be the number one starter in Memphis.

Expect the Cardinals to make another move or two either before the end of Spring Training or before the end of April, as they have some crowdedness they need to thin out.

How do you handle the PTBNL?

And it was Matt Bowman that was traded along with Alvarez.

Thinking about starting one with Cincinnati. Their expiring contracts and guys on short deals intrigue me.

MLB 19 Baltimore Orioles Franchise - 2019 Spring Training Wrap-Up

Spring is over and the team heads north to open the season in New York at Yankee Stadium on 3/28. We actually ended spring on a good note, winning 4 in a row to finish 12-15. Here is the opening day starting lineup to face new Yankee lefty James Paxton:

                                2B Jonathan Villar
                                SS Stevie Wilkerson
                                LF Trey Mancini
                                DH Mark Trumbo
                                CF Joey Rickard
                                RF D.J. Stewart
                                3B Renato Nunez
                                1B Chris Davis
                                C Chance Sisco

Wilkerson won the starting shortstop job as a darkhorse candidate coming in to spring. He batted over .300 and stole bases like a pro so he earned it. Stewart and Rickard played the best in a messy outfield competition, and Sisco hit just a little better than Austin Wynns to win the starting backstop job. Both played excellent defense and Wynns made the team on the bench.

                                Opening Day Bench:
                                C Austin Wynns
                                IF Drew Jackson
                                IF Richie Martin
                                OF Anthony Santander

Austin Hays and Cedric Mullins have higher ceilings than Santander, but they didn’t hit much in spring so they will head to AAA to get regular at-bats and join #1 prospect Yusniel Diaz in a promising Norfolk Tides outfield. Richie Martin didn’t earn his spot on the team, batting .140 and striking out a ton. As a rule 5 pick however we decided to keep him around for an extended audition instead of return him to Oakland. He plays steady defense and if he can hit eventually he could be a future starting shortstop. Have to plan for the future more than 2019. Jackson hit a 450 ft bomb off of Jose Berrios in spring training, and has double-plus arm strength and speed. He narrowly lost the starting SS job to Wilkerson.

Andrew Cashner has been named the opening day starter, finishing a solid spring with a 6 IP 1 ER performance against Toronto. He’ll be followed in the rotation by Alex Cobb, Dylan Bundy, David Hess, and Yefry Ramirez. Nate Karns pitched poorly and was placed on release waivers to clear room for some promising youngsters at AAA.

                                Here is the pen:
                                LHP Tanner Scott
                                LHP Paul Fry
                                RHP Mike Wright Jr.
                                RHP Branden Kline
                                LHP Richard Bleier
                                RHP Mychal Givens
                                RHP Craig Kimbrel

Kimbrel sticks out like a sore thumb, but he is just a placeholder until he is traded for prospects. Kline is the feel good story of the spring. He’s a 27-year-old rookie, and a local Maryland product who missed 2 full seasons with injuries and hasn’t pitched above AA. He came into camp with 97 mph heat and a hellacious change up, striking out 10 in 8 IP and only allowing a single run. He beat Miguel Castro for the last bullpen spot. Tanner Scott was nasty as well, striking out 23 batters in 10 IP. I see him as a future closer but he is holding down long relief duties for now as all of my swingman candidates fizzled in spring training against major league hitters.

                                Other items of note:
RHP Pedro Araujo was returned to the Cubs (rule 5)
Jimmy Yacabonis heads to AAA and will be converted to a reliever full-time. I had tried him as a starter in camp and it didn’t work out. He was much better in 1-inning spurts.
Rio Ruiz hit 3 homers in limited spring at-bats, but got squeezed out due to Martin staying around. He heads to AAA and pushes top prospect Ryan Mountcastle to 1B.
I have some pitchers I like in AAA. We will see a few of them mid-season as I will look to move Cobb and Cashner at the deadline.

This season will be a grind. Only the Marlins are projected to be worse than this team. But the games have to be played and I’m hoping some of these guys are ready to prove they belong on a future winner.
