MLB 19 Baltimore Orioles Franchise - 2019 Spring Training Wrap-Up
Spring is over and the team heads north to open the season in New York at Yankee Stadium on 3/28. We actually ended spring on a good note, winning 4 in a row to finish 12-15. Here is the opening day starting lineup to face new Yankee lefty James Paxton:
2B Jonathan Villar
SS Stevie Wilkerson
LF Trey Mancini
DH Mark Trumbo
CF Joey Rickard
RF D.J. Stewart
3B Renato Nunez
1B Chris Davis
C Chance Sisco
Wilkerson won the starting shortstop job as a darkhorse candidate coming in to spring. He batted over .300 and stole bases like a pro so he earned it. Stewart and Rickard played the best in a messy outfield competition, and Sisco hit just a little better than Austin Wynns to win the starting backstop job. Both played excellent defense and Wynns made the team on the bench.
Opening Day Bench:
C Austin Wynns
IF Drew Jackson
IF Richie Martin
OF Anthony Santander
Austin Hays and Cedric Mullins have higher ceilings than Santander, but they didn’t hit much in spring so they will head to AAA to get regular at-bats and join #1 prospect Yusniel Diaz in a promising Norfolk Tides outfield. Richie Martin didn’t earn his spot on the team, batting .140 and striking out a ton. As a rule 5 pick however we decided to keep him around for an extended audition instead of return him to Oakland. He plays steady defense and if he can hit eventually he could be a future starting shortstop. Have to plan for the future more than 2019. Jackson hit a 450 ft bomb off of Jose Berrios in spring training, and has double-plus arm strength and speed. He narrowly lost the starting SS job to Wilkerson.
Andrew Cashner has been named the opening day starter, finishing a solid spring with a 6 IP 1 ER performance against Toronto. He’ll be followed in the rotation by Alex Cobb, Dylan Bundy, David Hess, and Yefry Ramirez. Nate Karns pitched poorly and was placed on release waivers to clear room for some promising youngsters at AAA.
Here is the pen:
LHP Tanner Scott
LHP Paul Fry
RHP Mike Wright Jr.
RHP Branden Kline
LHP Richard Bleier
RHP Mychal Givens
RHP Craig Kimbrel
Kimbrel sticks out like a sore thumb, but he is just a placeholder until he is traded for prospects. Kline is the feel good story of the spring. He’s a 27-year-old rookie, and a local Maryland product who missed 2 full seasons with injuries and hasn’t pitched above AA. He came into camp with 97 mph heat and a hellacious change up, striking out 10 in 8 IP and only allowing a single run. He beat Miguel Castro for the last bullpen spot. Tanner Scott was nasty as well, striking out 23 batters in 10 IP. I see him as a future closer but he is holding down long relief duties for now as all of my swingman candidates fizzled in spring training against major league hitters.
Other items of note:
RHP Pedro Araujo was returned to the Cubs (rule 5)
Jimmy Yacabonis heads to AAA and will be converted to a reliever full-time. I had tried him as a starter in camp and it didn’t work out. He was much better in 1-inning spurts.
Rio Ruiz hit 3 homers in limited spring at-bats, but got squeezed out due to Martin staying around. He heads to AAA and pushes top prospect Ryan Mountcastle to 1B.
I have some pitchers I like in AAA. We will see a few of them mid-season as I will look to move Cobb and Cashner at the deadline.
This season will be a grind. Only the Marlins are projected to be worse than this team. But the games have to be played and I’m hoping some of these guys are ready to prove they belong on a future winner.Comment

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
Lol, no, I’m not that depraved. I played 4 scattered games in spring training and quick managed the rest. During the regular season I play one, quick manage 5. It helps keep things moving and still leaves me full control of every aspect of what goes on (not a big fan of simming at all). I’ll break my pattern if I have a prospect making an MLB debut or some other significant game, but for the most part I stick to my 1 and 5 schedule so I’m rotating my pitchers and still keeping the timeline moving.Comment

I always do one with the A's but i feel like they're a little easier this year (still might do them later) what team you guys recommend? Prefer a team with a nice stadium but all ears want it to be a bit of a projectComment

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
I've played The Show since 08, and pretty much every baseball video game before that. I've always used the Cubs. I remember playing around 2012-2013 and it was an accomplishment that I came in third place in the division and won 82 games. I always play every game, every pitch.Comment

MLB the Show 19 - Baltimore Orioles Franchise
We’re already scuffling at 1-5 after a 6 game road trip to open the season. Davis, Trumbo, Wilkerson, and Renato Nunez are all off to slow starts batting under .200. Chance Sisco is the only one hitting - he’s over .400 with a homer and a few RBI’s.
David Hess pitched shutout ball into the 8th in Toronto, then was foiled when Givens gave up a grand slam to Rowdy Tellez and surrendered the lead in the process. Kimbrel has blown his only save opportunity of the season. Yefry Ramirez and Mike Wright both got pounded in their first outings of the year as well.
Yikes. It’ll be the Yankees again tonight for the home opener as Cobb takes on Severino. Minor league season begins tonight as well.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
I'm thinking about doing the Marlins again. I've got a Jays franchise on the go right now, but finding it a bit too easy based on Vlad Jr. and a lot of the young talent coming up. Don't know if I can mentally handle getting thumped most games due to the lack of offense though. I think I'd have to add a so/so veteran that can actually hit just to keep me engaged.2025 Expos Expansion:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...gid=1295163793Comment

Same here....My current franchise that's in 2024 started with the 2014 Cubs (My favorite team for over 30 years) and Ive played every inning but I use pitch counts. I went 72-90 in 2014. I did call up Bryant in September of 14, I couldn't waitI've mentioned it before, but I'm about a game away from winning my 10th straight Central flag. I'm shooting for the 90's-00's Braves 14 division titles.

I’ll be playing 162 with the blue jays but it will be fun with all of the youth coming up!

I went out and signed Gattis. Grabbed Carlos Gomez off waivers. They are helping a little. Vlad will be fun to play with though!

This game is driving me crazy. After hitting 17 HRS in March/April I’m halfway through June and Bellinger is is stuck on 18 HRS. He’s still hitting well but the lack of HRS is messing with my mind!

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread
Fantasy Braves franchise, 4 game losing streak...4-7, 1-7 to Colorado, 2-4, 3-4 to the Mets. Perhaps switching to LEGEND/LEGEND wasn’t a good idea. Sent down Brooklyn Bridges (if you ever saw his batter walk ups you’d bean him every time) and brought up an extra pitcher, Luis Gohara. Going to drop my hitting back to AS. 6-8, but 1st place Nats and Phil’s are only 6-5.
Loving the pre pitch presentation. Feels like a new game.Comment
