Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Following the 2019 Winter Meetings things began to pick up.

    Major trades around the league:
Rockies obtain catcher Salvador Perez from the Royals for CP WADE Davis, RP Craig Stammen, and RF Pedro Cerrano.

Dodgers trade 2B Brandon Lowe to the Tigers for SP Billy Chapel and SS Willi Castro. Chapel and Castro will start in AA Tulsa. Moving Lowe opens up a MLB Roster slot for the Dodgers who want to promote CF Alex Verdugo.

Rangers acquire SP Zack Greinke from the Diamondbacks for 2B Rougned Odor.

    Major FA Signings:

Angels sign SP Zack Wheeler, 4 yrs/$44.1M
    Pirates sign 2B Starlin Castro, 4 yrs/$36.7M

            End of Season - 2021

The miracle turn around never came. We end the season at 55 and 107. As usual it wasnt bad enough to get us the first pick next year. That goes to the Orioles who finished 1 game worse than us. 2 other teams, the Rangers and the Marlins finished with 100 losses. The Yankees and A's broke 100 wins with the Indians, Dodgers and Braves all finishing with 99.

            Standings
            Spoiler

The offense did get a bit better as the season went on. But nowhere near enough to really matter. The few good players we had were Ryan O'Hearn. He hit .277/.372/.539/.911 with a team record 40 HR. He was by far the best player on the team leading us in Runs, Hits, HR, RBI, SLG, OPS, and Walks. Michael Gigliotti finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting as he hit .305/.373/.521/.894 with 10 HR. Fellow Rookie Anderson Miller hit .283/.348/.457 with 5 HR after mainly coming up to be a 4th OF with all of our injuries. Bubba Starling rounds out the good guys hitting .273/.345/.404 with 9 HR while leading the team in WAR at 3.6.

Drew Waters and Hunter Dozier werent terrible. Waters hit .271/.332/.437 with 9 HR but was limited to 89 games due to injuries. While Dozier hit .254/.335/.427 with 13 HR in 112 games. He increased his AVG by 25 points and SLG by 41 while his OPS jumped almost 50 points.

As for everyone else. They were completely useless. Lead by Salvador Perez and Aldaberto Mondesi with a guest appearance from Khalil Lee. Salvy had the worst season of his career hitting .209/.260/.360 with 15 HR. Mondesi hit .211/.272/.345 with just 9 HR. He did miss almost 2 months with an injury though. And Khalil Lee attempting to fill in for injured guys hit .215/.278/.337.

The pitching was pretty much the same. Heath Fillmyer didnt end up having as good of a season as he started off. But turned out to be our best starter thanks to the Duffy trade. 4.10 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 164.2 IP. Scott Barlow had a 3.44 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP in 123 IPO out of the pen thanks to all the trash we were putting out to start games. Chad Sobotka joined him with a 3.44 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 86.1 IP with Josh Staumont putting up a 3.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 54 IP while picking up 29 saves.

Jake Junis and Richard Lovelady ended up being okay but could have been better. Junis had his terrible start to the year giving up 37 runs in 40.1 IP before being sent to AAA. Came back up and gave up another 37 runs over his next 99.2 IP. 8.26 ERA before. 3.34 ERA after. Lovelady put up a 4.11 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP in 85.1 IP. Walked just over 4 per 9 innings.

And once again everyone else was trash. Brady Singer fell apart as the season went on. Finishing with a 5.12 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP. And Brad Keller put up a 4.95 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP after having 3 straight seasons with an ERA under 4 to start his career.

With that the 2021 season is over and there are some changes coming for 2022. No one on the coaching staff will be back. We will let Salvador Perez walk in free agency after spending 15 years in the organization. And we have some money to spend if the right players are available.

Dodgers sign Free Agent First Baseman Mark Trumbo to complete the 2020 25 man roster. Heading into the season here is the clubhouse breakdown:

              Rotation:
              (R) Colton Stern
              (L) Clayton Kershaw
              (R) Walker Buehler
              (L) Julio Urias
              (R) Ross Stripling

              Bullpen:
              (R) Yasiel Sierra
              (R) Pedro Baez
              (R) Dylan Floro
              (R) Kenta Maeda
              (R) Josh Fields
              (L) Jose Alvarado
              (R) Kenley Jansen
This is Sierra’s first year with the main club. Maeda started 2019 in the bigs before pitching troubles saw him dropped to AAA to bring up another southpaw. The Dodgers are hoping for a solid year out of newly acquired Alvarado.

              Starters
              1B: Max Muncy
              2B: Chris Taylor
              3B: Justin Turner
              SS: Corey Seager
              C: Austin Barnes
              LF: Joc Pederson
              CF: Cody Bellinger
              RF: Yasiel Puig

              Bench:
              1B: Mark Trumbo
              3B: Kike Hernandez
              C: J Paul Fullerton
              CF: Alex Verdugo
              RF: Andrew Toles

The starting lineup and everyday players for the 2020 Dodgers remain the same however the bench takes on a different look. Fullerton, first year in the MLB, will take over back up catcher duties after the 1 year rental of Kurt Suzuki. Verdugo will start the season on the bench after a career so far spent in the minor. Toles returns to the main club after starting 2019 with them before being sent down to open a roster spot in the bullpen and allow him to play everyday in AAA Oklahoma City. But with how the Dodgers like to rotate their 5 outfielders using a platoon system, all 5 will see their fair share of game action. With some talent in the Minors at first, the Dodgers signed Trumbo to bridge the gap and allow them to receive the playing time in the lower levels they would not receive backing up Muncy.

                [central]Cardinals sweep Phillies. Win 4th straight[/center]

The Cardinals continue to play strong baseball as they finished a sweep of the Phillies in Busch Stadium. The Cardinals did it with a combination of offense and great pitching. The Cardinals allowed a total of 4 runs over the 3 game series while scoring 16 of their own.

The Cardinals are currently 8-5 on the year and find themselves a game and a half back of the Reds. The Cardinals are 8-1 after starting the year 0-4.

Next up is a rare Friday off day before playing a quick 2 game weekend series with the Brewers in St.Louis, before taking an 8 game west coast trip.

                April Schedule:

                2 vs MIL
                4 @ ARI
                4 @ COL
                3 vs NYM
                3 @ MIL
                3 @ MIA

Cardinals recall Luke Weaver from Memphis

The Cardinals have recalled SP Luke Weaver from Memphis. Weaver will take the rotation spot vacated by Carlos Martinez due to being placed on the 60 Day IL. Weaver was 6-7 last year in 22 starts, but did have a 3.27 ERA and a WHIP of 1.06 in 127 innings of work.

The Cardinals will hope that Weaver can hold the position until Martinez returns sometime around the All Star Break.

Game 5 had a “must win “ feel for both teams, and they would both play with that intensity. The Cubs would load the bases in the first 2 innings but Verlander would pitch out of trouble leaving them stranded both times. Again the Astros would get on the board first.

Bregman hit a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 2nd to put Houston up early 2-0

Then Houston would add 3 more with another pair of HRs. First was a solo shot by Correa to right

                                IMG_1072.jpg

                                IMG_1073.jpg

Then a 2 run jack by Reddick to right, making the lead now 5-0 Astros

Quintana would finish the 4th but Chicago brought in Kerry Wood for the 5th

Then in the top of the 6th the Cubs would finally manage to get on the board with a solo shot to left by Sanchez

                                IMG_1080.jpg

Wood looked fantastic in relief for Chicago and started hanging zeros hoping this Cubs offense would get going. Score was 5-1 heading into the last third of the ballgame

                                IMG_1081.jpg

Then in the top of the 7th after Happ singled off Verlander with 1 out, Houston would bring in Devenski for Verlander

Devenski allowed Happ to move up on a wild pitch,

then Descalso took him deep to center for a 2 run shot shortening the lead to 5-3

                                IMG_1086.jpg

Devenski would then work out of the 7th without further issue

Kerry Wood continued his dominance shutting the Astros down through the 7th and 8th as well, keeping the score at 5-3 headed to the ninth.

Top of the 9th, Houston brings in their closer Wagner.

Wagner strikes out Happ and Descalso both on fastballs to start the frame! But then walked Sandberg bringing the potential tying run to the plate in Bryant!

Bryant would stun this Houston crowd with a 2 run blast to left tying the game at 5-5 in the 9th!

Wagner would stop them there though as he struck out Williams on a slider.

Bottom of the 9th, with Sutter and Cishek both in the bullpen, the Cubs elected to stick with Wood

Wood got Springer to ground out but then hit Reddick with a pitch. Houston put in Marisnick to run for Reddick

                                IMG_1095.jpg

                                Wood then walked Chirinos

                                IMG_1097.jpg

Then another wild pitch allows Marisnick and Chirinos to advance to 2nd and 3rd

                                IMG_1098.jpg

So Chicago then intentionally walked Kemp loading the bases with 1 out and Altuve up!

                                IMG_1099.jpg

Houston sent their runners attempting a suicide squeeze to end it, but Altuve would miss the bunt and Sanchez tagged Marisnick out at the plate with ease!

                                IMG_1100.jpg

Chicago would then intentionally walk Altuve to load the bases again but now with 2 outs and Jackson up!

                                IMG_1101.jpg

Jackson hammered the game winning grand slam to left sending everyone into hysterics! Houston wins 9-5 and now are only 1 game away from winning it all with the lead in the series 3-2 heading back to Wrigley! We’ll see if they can pull one out in Chicago or if the Cubs can continue the home team winning trend to steal it back. Regardless this has been one heck of a series!
