The Cardinals (30-26) took 2 out of 3 games from the Brewers in Milwaukee to get to within 3 games of the central division leaders.
The Cardinals could've had the sweep but the bullpen once again reared its ugly head and blew the series opening game by allowing 9 runs combined in the 7th and 8th innings to the Brewers. The Cardinals started the 7th inning up 5-2 and ended the inning down 9-5. After the 8th they were down 11-5 which was the final score.
Game 2 saw a turn of fortune as the Cardinals were down 1-0 heading into their final at-bats when they put up 6 runs in the 9th on 4 hits including a grand slam by Juan Fabregas which was followed by a solo shot by Jo Adell as the Cardinals shocked Josh Hader and the Brewers.
Game 3 saw Kyle Funkhouser absolutely dominate the Brewers after allowing a lead off homerun to Byron Buxton. After Buxton's homerun, Funkhouser would retire 17 straight including 13 by strikeout. The bullpen was able to preserve this win and Greg Holland notched his 2nd save is as many tries with the Cardinals by striking out the side in the 9th on just 11 pitches.
The Cardinals will now travel to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field for a 3 game weekend series with the Cubs.
The Cardinals turned things around in May finishing the month 5 games over .500 and posting a 16-11 record to move their overall record to 29-26 just 4 games behind the Brewers in the Central. The Cardinals trail in the wildcard by just a game and a half.
It wasn't a perfect month by any stretch but since the acquisition of Greg Holland, the bullpen and the Cardinals have been much more consistent, although the bullpen still hits troubled waters at times.
Still the Cardinals had a positive month as they prepare to enter the dog days of summer and get into the depths of the baseball season.
With 7 weeks until the All-Star Break and 9 weeks until the deadline, the Cardinals are well within the Central division race. Hopefully the positive baseball trend continues and the Cardinals can be atop the Central Division when June comes to a close in 30 days.
The Cardinals will begin the month of June with a new battery mate for Devon Snow. The Cardinals placed Carson Kelly on optional assignment waivers following their win over the Brewers on Thursday.
The 30 year old Kelly beat out Andrew Knizner for the backup role to Devon Snow out of Spring Training, has struggled both at the plate and keeping the opponent running game in check. If he clears waivers, Kelly will be sent to Memphis to serve as the backup and mentor for Zach Jackson.
Andrew Knizner has been recalled to be the 2nd catcher on the active roster. Knizner hit .324 with 5 homeruns and 25 RBI's in Memphis this year.
The Cardinals and White Sox have agreed to a deal that will send RHP Mike Mayers to the White Sox in exchange for RHP Tyler Johnson.
The 32 year old Mike Mayers was once thought to be a staple in the Cardinals bullpen for years to come but he struggled in 2023 and again last year in 2024, thus prompting the Cardinals to let him hit the open market. When Mayers was unsigned late in the winter, the Cardinals took a chance on the 32 year old, signing him to a one year deal and inviting him to Spring Training. He struggled in the Spring and was assigned to Memphis where he struggled all year and was sent to Springfield to see if he couldn't get things turned around, which he couldn't. Mayers posted a 0-4 record with a 7.89 ERA at Memphis and a 0-2 record with a 8.45 ERA at Springfield.
Still the White Sox are hoping that they can help the 32 year old find his old form and get a steal of a trade with Mayers.
The Cardinals will receive 27 year old Tyler Johnson in exchange. Johnson has served as the closer in the White Sox Double A organization where he has pitched to a 2.19 ERA with 5 saves in 6 chances.
Johnson will be assigned to Springfield where he will likely serve as the closer there, replacing DeAndre Massey who will likely be optioned to Palm Beach (Single A)
