The Dodgers (33-9) take 2 out of 3 against the Phillies (19-24) by scores of 6-3, 0-1 and 4-0.

Cody Bellinger managed 5 doubles in the the 3 game series leading all Dodgers in extra base hit.

12 May 20- After a 2 run home run by Andrew McCutchen in the first, the Dodgers were able to battle back, eventually placing the game out of reach in the 7th.

13 May 20- An 11 K, 7 inning gem of a game by Clayton Kershaw (7-0, 0.92) was all for nothing, as Phillies Second Baseman Scott Kingery placed a perfectly executed walk off Bunt down the the first base mile in the bottom of the 9th, scored the games lone run.

14 May 20- 7 scoreless innings by Walker Buehler (5-1, 1.87), coming off a bruised hand injury, paved the way for the Dodgers to take the 3rd and final game of the series as the Phillies managed only 4 hits in the contest.

The road trip will continue in Kansas City against the Royals (21-22) before heading home to host the Phillies and Indians for 3 games a piece.

          Thoughts:
The World Champion Chicago Cubs headed into the offseason with a few question marks. They knew the looming free agency of many of the core players were coming up this year. Thankfully the Cubs managed to re-sign Schwarber and Rizzo last offseason, but more expensive players came up this year. Fan favorite Javier Baez, and 2X MVP Kris Bryant.

The Cubs knew to stay under the luxury tax that they would have to let one go, and with Scott Boras as Bryant’s agent and coming off an MVP it would be extremely difficult to bring Bryant back in, and Cubs fans said a bittersweet goodbye to the Chicago legend. The Cubs were able to extend Baez long term, and looked to add some veteran leadership in the outfield. Although Justin Turner had a good year at the leadoff spot, the Cubs knew with Bryant’s departure that Turner would be more suited in the #2 spot in the lineup and they went searching for a leadoff hitter. They nabbed two veteran outfielders in Adam Eaton and Andrew McCutchen. Likelihood is they platoon the open OF spot and give off days to whoever is in need.

The Cubs were also losing a large portion of their stellar bullpen that carried them to the World Series. They were able to re-sign Kimbrel and Miller, but had to let Morrow, Soria, and Jones go. They replaced them with Givens an All-Star last year in BAL and Dellin Betances. The Cubs were extremely pleased with Teheran’s performance last year and brought him back on a 1YR deal as well. Overall, the Cubs were pleased with there offseason despite no flashy signings and a lot of older veterans. The Cubs will look forward to brining up more prospects in the coming year to help fill the gaps.

          2022 Season Cubs

The defending champion Cubs were looking to enter 2022 season on a good note. Lots of expectations still and with the loss of Kris Bryant many were worried they would take a step back despite other signings. The Cubs proved the criticism true so far in the early part of the season.

March/April was a tough 33 game start for the Cubs as they limped to a 15-18 record heading into May. Injury to 4th OF’er Derek Tate at the end of spring training led to the call up of 2020 2nd Rd pick Henry Browning, and 5 games into the season Browning broke his ankle, which then made the Cubs call up another top prospect In OF’er Brennen Davis.
Kris Bryant no longer being in the middle of the lineup may have affected multiple Cub hitters as the offense was stagnant in the first part of the season. Only Rookie 2B Alan Quick was hitting over .300 after the first month, with many averages below .250.

The rotation returned the exact same 5 as the year before. 2021 was a excellent season for this crew as they all had under a 3.60ERA over the entire season, the beginning of 2022 was different. After April only Hendricks and Urias have under 4.00ERA’s while Julio Teheran has been awful with a 0-4 record and a 8ERA.

Only the bullpen has been a bright spot for the Cubs in the first month. The entire team looks to pick it up in the coming month. 15-18 start is not what the defending champs envisioned.

Losing streak is now at three after a complete collapse by the bullpen. Hendricks was solid through six and I had a 5-2 lead in the top of the 8th... lost to the Brewers 11-5.

I've now lost 6 of my last 8 and I've allowed the following over that stretch.

            11 runs on 12 hits
            8 runs on 16 hits
            10 runs on 15 hits
            4 runs on 12 hits
            8 runs on 13 hits
            6 runs on 10 hits
            1 run on 8 hits
            8 runs on 13 hits

CHICAGO (OS) -- The Cubs losing streak reached four Wednesday afternoon as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. The Cubs took an early lead but a string of timely hits, a pair of home runs by Lorenzo Cain and a three-run homer by Jed Gyorko in the top of the sixth proved too much for what's been a shaky Cubs bullpen.

Jose Quintana completed just 4 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits. Tyler Olson was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs in just 2/3 innings of work.

The Cubs have now lost seven of their last nine and now trail the first place Milwaukee Brewers by 4.0 games in the NL Central division. The Cubs pitching, which was an issue last season, has continued to struggle in 2020. While the starting pitching has been average at best, the bullpen has not been able to hold leads. With limited options in the farm system, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein is still considering moves that might help shore up the pitching issues on the North Side.

"We're always exploring options," said Epstein when asked about the possibility of acquiring pitching help. "You have to balance what you have, what you can get, and where it will put you in the future."

With the 2020 MLB Entry Draft right around the corner, analysts expect the Cubs to be pitcher heavy in the draft after years of stockpiling position players.

The Cubs travel to San Diego tomorrow for a four-game series against the Padres as they look to right the ship. Tyler Chatwood (2-1, 5.13) will take the mound for the Cubs as the Padres will call on Garrett Richards (4-0, 2.76).

Twins Drop Game Above the Border
Yamaguchi goes seven strong in victory

                      April 13, 2020
Toronto--- Shun Yamaguchi went seven strong innings and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his second homerun of the year as the Toronto Blue Jays knocked off the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday night.

Yamaguchi (1-3), who came over from Japan in the off-season, had struggled making the adjustment to his new league. But tonight he looked settled in, allowing just four hits and two solo homeruns against a potent Minnesota lineup. Ken Giles worked a shaky ninth for his fourth save of the young season.

On the other side of the bump, Kenta Maeda (3-1) had been brilliant for his new team, but tonight he struggled to control the strike zone allowing Jays hitters to gain comfort. He five and one-third innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

“I felt like I was being squeezed a little up there,” commented Maeda through his interprater after the game. “But I still was not myself. I can pitch better. I will pitch better.”

The Twins got back-to-back homers from Miguel Sano, his first of the year, and Jake Cave in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2, but they had trouble putting anything together the rest of the night. Mitch Garver contributed two hits in the losing effort.

Toronto left fielder Brandon Drury left after the second batter of the game after going back on a ball and making the play. He was clutching his side as he exited the field. Meanwhile, Twins center fielder Byron Buxton, who started the year on the IL, left during his third inning at-bat also clutching his side after a check swing.

The Twins and Jays will meet for game two tomorrow night, with a first pitch scheduled for 7:07 PM. Jake Odorizzi (1-1, 1.50) will take the ball for Minnesota and Tanner Roark (0-3, 4.85) gets the rock for Toronto.

SAN DIEGO (OS) -- The Chicago Cubs ended their five-game losing streak Friday night as they topped the Padres at Petco Park by a final of 8-6. The Cubs bullpen, which has struggled mightily so far in 2020 was called upon for the majority of the game after starter Yu Darvish was forced to leave the game due to injury in just the top of the third.

Darvish, who was said to have a minor hand injury, was impressive through 2 1/3, recording each out by way of strikeout. Recently called-up reliever Casey Sadler made his first appearance of the year in relief after Darvish's injury and recorded the win, despite tossing just 1 2/3 innings. Sadler allowed a pair of runs on three hits. Including Sadler, the Cubs relied on four relievers before Craig Kimbrel finished the job in the ninth for his seventh save of the year.

The offense was paced by Willson Contreras, who smashed a grand slam in the top of the fifth off of Padres starter Zach Davies. Contreras was 5-for-3 on the night as he continued to swing a hot bat.

With the win the Cubs snap their longest losing streak of the season and look to make it two wins in a row tomorrow as Jon Lester (5-2, 3.36) will start for Chicago. The Padres will call upon Chris Paddack (4-3, 4.38). San Diego had won six consecutive games prior to the 8-6 loss to the Cubs Friday.

                        INJURY UPDATES:

YU DARVISH: The Cubs starter left the game Friday night after recording seven strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings but is not expected to miss any time. His injury is likely a finger sprain.

IAN HAPP: The Cubs utility man, who was having a monstrous year, suffered a torn hamstring in early May and is expected miss another month. A return in late June or early July is likely for Happ.

STEVE SOUZA JR: Recovering from a head contusion from a misplayed ball last week, Souza will likely be sidelined until the end of May. He will be re-evaluated and could be out as long as 1-2 months.

                            Cardinals take series against Orioles

The Cardinals won 2 of the 3 games in a weekend series with the Orioles in Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (47-29) lost the series opener with Jack Flaherty being knocked out in the 2nd inning after giving up 7 runs on 9 hits including 3 homeruns and walking 4. The O's jumped out and never looked back as they went on to win this game 12-3.

Game 2 saw Junior Fernandez pitch a gem as he went 8 innings giving up just 2 runs, which were 2 solo homeruns by former Cardinal Patrick Wisdom. But the offense helped out by scoring 6 runs on 11 hits and drawing 7 walks.

Game 3 was a dominant performance by the Cardinals as they put up 14 runs on 21 hits including 6 homeruns in a game that saw the winds blowing in excess of 12mph out left center field. Jo Adell snapped out of his funk by going 4 for 4 with 3 homeruns and a double, and he knocked in 7 runs. Kyle Funkhouser had a day on the mound pitching 7 strong innings where he only allowed a single run (Patrick Wisdom homer again) on 6 hits and striking out 12. The bullpen pitched a perfect 2 innings of relief as Pedro Baez and Ryan Helsley combined to give up no hits and strike out 5. Helsley did walk a batter.

The Cardinals are back in action Monday night as they travel to New York to face the Mets for a 4 game series to finish up the month of June.

Right now the Cardinals lead the National League Central division by 5 1/2 games over the Brewers and Reds.

Twins Can’t Find Big Hit in Loss
13 runners left stranded by Minnesota

                              April 14, 2020
Toronto--- Toronto pitching scattered nine hits and five walks, and the Jays hitters came through in the clutch as the Blue Jays topped the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Tanner Roark (1-3) went only five innings, allowing six hits and three walks, but limited the Twins to one run, which came off the bat of a Josh Donaldson groundout in the fifth inning. Roark struck out four in the win. Ryan Borucki and Tim Mayza both worked multiple innings to preserve the victory.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (1-2) tried to stay with Roark, but a 3-run second inning and a 2-run sixth inning for the Blue Jays were too much to overcome for the Twins bats. Odorizzi went six full innings, but he allowed five runs (four earned) with six hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Offensively, the Twins got two hits from Donaldson, Jorge Polanco and Nelson Cruz. Both of Polanco’s hits were doubles. Max Kepler’s hitting streak ended at 10-games.

The Twins will try to take the series finale tomorrow night. Homer Bailey (3-0, 1.29) will look for his fourth win of the season, as the Blue Jays will counter with veteran righty Chase Anderson (1-0, 4.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM.

The Dodgers (34-11) only manage to win 1 of 3 in Kansas City against the Royals (23-23) by scores of 11-3, 3-7 and 2-4.

15 May 20- In game 1 the Dodgers explode for 19 hits and 11 runs, while leaving 11 stranding on the bases. Stranded runners became a theme for the Dodgers as they finished the series with 23 total runners left on.

16 May 20- The Dodgers bats cooled off in game 2 managing 8 hits in the losing effort.

17 May 20- The Royals overcame 4 defensive errors to claim the win in the series finale.

The Dodgers welcome the Phillies (20-26) and the Cleveland Indians (26-23) for a 6 game home stand. The Dodgers won 2 of 3 in Philadelphia last week against the Phillies who currently sit 8.5 games behind the first place Marlins in the NL East. Projected pitching matchups against the Phillies are:

                                Clayton Kershaw (7-0, 0.93) v Zack Wheeler (1-2, 2.17)
                                Walker Buehler (5-1, 1.87) v Ranger Suarez (2-4, 3.78)
                                Julio Urias (5-1, 2.82) v Jake Arrieta (5-2, 3.11)

In league news the Red Sox make 2 separate trades. The Red Sox send catcher Christian Vazquez to the Nationals for second baseman Howie Kendrick and center fielder Michael Taylor. In a separate trade with the A’s, the Red Sox obtain relief pitcher Yusmeiro Petit for center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.
