Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Is there any limits to how many created teams we can create for franchise? Obviously there's a 30 team limit for one franchise but if I want to do a different franchise league, can I create another 30 teams?

Cardinals take 2 of 3 from Reds

The Cardinals won the last 2 games of the series against the Reds in Cincinnati to win the series. The Cardinals used a miraculous comeback in the series finale scoring 4 runs in the 9th and then 3 runs in the 10th to win the game 9-6.

The Cardinals bats finally woke up in the series finale as they were held to 2 hits in a 13-0 loss in the series opener, and then only 4 hits in a 2-0 win in game 2. Game 3 the Cardinals finally got the offense going scoring 9 runs on 13 hits with 4 homeruns and 3 doubles.

Brendan McKay has seemingly broken out of his slump as he's now hit safely in 6 straight games with 2 homeruns and a double in the series.

On the flip side, Paul DeJong continues to struggle as he went just 1 for 11 in the series with 7 strikeouts. His lone hit was an infield single thanks to a swinging bunt. Mike Matheny is considering moving Tommy Edman into the lineup for a few games to see if DeJong can't figure things out.

While the pitching wasn't perfect in the series, especially game 1 where Jack Flaherty gave up 8 runs on 11 hits in just 3 innings, the bullpen was solid in an effort to help propel the Cardinals to a series win.

The Cardinals will now travel to Washington D.C to face the Nationals in a 3 game weekend series. Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez, and Jack Flaherty are the scheduled starters for the Cardinals.

Cardinals activate Nick Burdi from 15 Day IL

The Cardinals have activated RHP Nick Burdi from the 15 Day IL. He will join the Cardinals in Washington for the weekend series with the Nationals.

RHP Ryan Helsley was optioned back to Memphis to free up a roster spot.

        CHARLOTTE

        MINERS

        FRANCHISE

Miners call press conference, McKinney and owner Goodnight present

SAS Ballpark was lively this cold day in December as the Miners had organized a press conference at 2 PM to "announce key signings to Miners baseball and it's future in Charlotte." Press from all around flooded the stadium and it's media room and were greeted by GM Bryan McKinney and owner James Goodnight with 3 conspicuous, empty chairs.

James Goodnight started the conference off. "Good afternoon everyone. We would like to welcome you all to SAS Ballpark this afternoon to announce 3 major signings that we feel are integral to this franchises future. McKinney and co. have done an excellent job this off-season of approaching free agents and trying to get them to join the Miners. However, one man does not a team make, which brings me to our first announcement this afternoon. I am not one for prolonged introduction, so without further ado, I would like to welcome Joe Maddon to the Charlotte Miners."

The room is abuzz as nobody in the room was expecting this. Maddon, the former Angels skipper, was not immediately extended by the Angels, but was fully expected to return as the manager of the Angels for another 4 years. Maddon walks upon the stage, to take his seat alongside Goodnight. Goodnight resumes speaking.

"Me and Joe have been in constant contact ever since the end of the 2022 season, mainly to gauge his feelings upon his role within the franchise. Initially he was sheepish on the idea of being in an advisory role to McKinney,
but as time progressed and our conversation continued he slowly became a believer in what we have here in Charlotte. I will now let Joe speak and announce the last 2 signings we have for you here today."

Maddon adjusts himself. "Hello everyone. After my time with the Cubs and Angels managing the team, enjoying the highs such as the World Series, and the lows, such as just barely missing the playoffs with one of the best offenses this league has seen, I would always find myself asking the same questions, chiefly of which would be, where do I go from here? What is next for me in my career? And I think I have found that here in Charlotte. My role within the organization will be to direct the farm system in their development and handling of players, as well as function as sort of an extra brain for GM McKinney. My role will not be to make any decisions on the major league side of things, merely to advise. My core role will be to handle the farm until I feel I have set the Miners up for future success. Even before signing on officially, i've been within the conversations alongside McKinney and Goodnight when it came to free agency, in which we bore wonderful fruit. With that, I would like to announce the signings of center fielder Starling Marte and first basemen Jose Abreu."

Abreu and Marte walk out onto the stage, in the Miners Maroon and Gold, sitting in the last 2 remaining seats.

McKinney, Maddon, and Goodnight talk shop about the franchise, and what the signings of Marte and Abreu mean. Then, for around 30 minutes, they have a Q+A with the group of 5.

        Some key notes

-Marte was close to signing with the Padres, who offered less money but more security with a player option, but chose the Miners instead as he loved the culture around the team.
-Abreu wanted to go either back to the White Sox or try out new thing in Charlotte and the White Sox didn't kick tires much past November.
-McKinney hinted that they tried at another big White Sox free agent- accidentally revealing that they went after Tim Anderson, who reupped with the Sox as he was the only other non-bench or depth White Sox free agent.
-He also hinted that they took a run at Sano but couldn't make the momey make sense.
-Marte also talked about Miners reliever Jarlin Garcia, who plays with Marte in the Dominican during the offseason. Garcia apparently played a huge role getting Marte to consider the Miners as a serious location.

Nashville Eagles - May 18th update

The Nashville Eagles were forced to call up top prospect 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes after 1B Josh Bell went down with an ACL sprain. Hayes was having a good start to his season in AAA Indianapolis hitting over .300 and was in a hot stretch at the time of the call up. Hayes would make a painful MLB Debut in a pinch hit situation in the 4th game of a 4 games series in New York against the Mets and got plunked in the rear in his only plate appearance. The Eagles would lose that game 4-1 and were unable to complete the sweep, dropping the Eagles to 25-21.

The Eagles in the midst of a hot May, going 11-4 so far in the month, head back home to face division rival Cubs, who are 23-25 and have been bitten by the injury bug losing yet another outfielder in Albert Almora Jr. for a month or 2 with a torn calf.

          Current NL Central Standings

          CIN - 27-20
          MIL - 27-21 - 0.5 GB
          NAS - 25-21 - 1.5 GB
          CHC - 23-25 - 4.5 GB
          STL - 16-32 - 11.5 GB

            Cardinals win series against Nationals

The Cardinals (17-17) again won the final two games of the series to win the series. The Cardinals lost game 1 thanks to the bullpen blowing up as Zack Burdi blew the lead in the 8th and the Cardinals were unable to come back in the 9th.

Game 2 saw the bullpen blow it again, this time Roberto Osuna blew a 9th inning lead. Osuna has blown 5 of his 9 save opportunities this year. Thankfully the offense was able to get the lead back in the 11th and Corey Littrell as able to close it out.

Game 3 saw Jack Flaherty find his groove again as he allowed just 2 runs on 6 hits and strike out 14 over 8 innings. Jordan Hicks was called upon to close it out and did so with a perfect 9th.

The Cardinals will be off on Monday and then head to Tampa Bay for a quick 2 game series against the Rays.

Nationals Slow Start To Open Season Finally Halted

After watching rookie Tim Cates get hit around in his first MLB start ever and falling to 0-6 to start the season, the Nationals have started to turn things around in the first home stand of the season. Kicking off their first home stand of the season the Nationals swept the Mets by screw of 4-3, 8-3, and 4-1. Strasburg, Corbin, and Sanchez all pitched great games as the bats came alive and the bullpen held onto late inning leads. The Nationals attention now turns to the second of their two series at home against the Marlins. Joe Ross will face Jordan Yamamoto in game one, Tim Cate will face Pablo Lopez in game two, and in the third and final game it will be Stephen Strasburg going against Caleb Smith.

                MINERS

                FRANCHISE

The Charlotte Miners twitter announced today that the team has signed 2nd basemen Joey Wendle to a 1 year deal worth 2.6 million dollars. Wendle, a 32 year old hailing from Delaware, appeared in a combined 366 games for the Pirates and the Reds, slashing an average .250/.302/.382 throughout his time on those 2 teams. Wendle, a 6th round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2012 was let walk from arbitration due to the Reds unique depth on the infield, and is also unique in that he can play 3rd and corner outfield as well as 2nd base. Wendle is expected to see the majority of his starts in injury fill-in and rest days. This signing puts the Miners at a full 40-man roster prior to spring training.

                  Trade Deadline - 2020

A strong June and July has the team sitting at 52-58 (27-21 since the draft). We are 4th in the division 10.5 games back of the Twins and 7 games back in the Wild Card race. With that though we still decided to move Whit Merrifield. Trading him to the Angels for OF Brandon Marsh, 2B Jahami Jones and SP Jose Rodriguez. Whit had started hitting better getting his line up to .280/.351/.434 with 11 HR and 27 stolen bases. Decided against trading Jorge Soler. Forgot he still had 1 year of Arbitration left after this season.

Marsh was in the Majors hitting .242/.296/.375 with 7 HR. We are going to send him down to AAA for the rest of the season. Jahami Jones was already in AAA hitting .253/.312/.474 with 19 HR. And last Jose Rodriguez was for some reason in A. Jake Junis had just had a trash game so we decided to cut him and go ahead and call up Rodriguez to take his spot.

The offense has been a bit better hitting .256/.332/.433 (16th/16th/9th). Slightly improving AVG and SLG with basically the same OBP. Hunter Dozier is still leading the team in WAR with 4.2 but Mondesi has been on fire recently getting up to 4.1. Dozier has a line of .307/.398/.516 still leading the team in AVG and OBP while hitting 20 HR. Mondesi is hitting .285/.343/.501 with 13 HR, 31 Doubles and 8 Triples while doubling his walk percentage over last year (again a big part of that might be my play). And more importantly, has yet to miss a game due to injury. Jorge Soler still leads the team in Home Runs now with 30 on the season. He got hot after the draft getting his AVG up over .250 but has now dropped all the way back down to .231. Still putting up a .344 OBP though. There is a very good chance Ryan O'Hearn would have the team HR lead if not for injuries. He has 23 in 78 games while hitting .285/.369/.563. Maikel Franco is by far the worst player on the team by WAR at -1.0. Hitting .249/.323/.349 with 10 HR. And has 8 errors in 793.1 innings at 3rd. We cut Bubba Starling the same day Whit got traded. Decided to call up Khalil Lee to take his spot.

A lot of changes have taken place in the rotation. We released Danny Duffy on June 14th. He had a 7.75 ERA in 67.1 IP and was unclaimed on waivers. Daniel Lynch was called up to take his place and has been pretty good so far. Struggled a bit his last couple outings but he has a 3.86 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 39.2 IP. On June 30th Jesse Hahn was released. He had a 5.95 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 84.2 IP. He was also unclaimed on waivers. We called up Brady Singer to take over his spot in the Rotation. Its been a little rough so far with a 4.30 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. Gave up no runs in his last start but only made it through 4 1/3 as he walked 6 guys. Brad Keller was sent to the pen in place of Jorge Lopez. Keller has a 5.71 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 36 games. 14 of them starts. Lopez has a 3.25 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP in 25 games and 9 of them starts.

Out in the pen not a lot has changed. We did send Tim Hill down to AAA. He had a 7.40 ERA in 20.2 IP. FIP of just 3.53 so was hoping he could figure out whatever the issue was but he ended up suffering a head fracture ending his season. He had allowed no runs in 7.2 IP. Holden Capps took his spot in the pen and has been pretty decent with a 3.80 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 21.1 IP. Greg Holland is still dominating like its 2014 putting up a 1.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 37.2 IP with 19 saves. Ian Kennedy has a 2.70 ERA while Kevin McCarthy has a 3.28 ERA with 0.97 WHIP. The other 3 guys Zimmer, Barlow and Rosenthal are all over 5.

Down in AAA Omaha is tied with Nashville for the division lead. Not a single pitcher on the team has an ERA over 3.86. In AA NW Arkansas leads their division by 5 games. The Springfield Cardinals took the first half win. Will have a bigger update on them when the MiLB season ends.

Only 52 games left in the season. 30 of them at home and 25 games against teams at or under .500. With Whit gone I would assume the losses will start to show back up. But Nicky Lopez has been playing well these last few games as well as Khalil Lee. If they can keep it up and Rodriguez can pitch well there is an outside shot we get close to the wild card. I dont expect it at all but I also didn't expect to be only 6 games under .500 at this point.

                    prospect deep dive

Welcome to the Charlotte Miners inaugural Prospect Deep Dive. I plan on writing these when necessary as a way to bridge the gap between draft picks playing in the minor league system for us that for one reason or another slip through the cracks- whether that be a player in their draft class overshadows them, they're in a position of little total value, or the prospect is viewed as one that has a low ceiling, but can still produce in specific ways at the major league level.

With that out of the way, we have 5 prospects to shed some light on, so strap in.

                    #1: Matthew Watson, starting pitcher.
#5th overall in the prospect pool, Unranked via MLB

Matt Watson, a 6'2 223 lefty is one of our very first picks as a franchise. After 3 seasons through high-A, double A, and triple-A, he's encroaching on breaking the MLB, especially if he performs as well as he did to end the year last year. In his final 10 starts for the Curve, he posted a microscopic 0.32 ERA, a 0.87 walks per 9, and struck out north of 20 batters. The big knock on him is that he sometimes struggles with control, which makes his secondary pitches fall flat over the plate causing him to get punished easily. He primarily uses a 4-seamer and a curveball to notch most of his strikes, causing a mismatch with velocity as his fastball and curve tend to approach the top of the zone and break down. In the case of his curveball, it also does what can only be defined as a second break towards the inside. The core thing that holds Watson from being a top of the line starter is that outside of his curveball, all of his pitches are fairly pedestrian. He also struggles at times with reacting to the field around him, which makes for easy steals despite a pinpoint arm when tested off of field. All in all, Watson should make his debut sometime in the next season or two, and hold down a spot from there on out.

                    2. Joel Guillen
7th overall in the prospect pool, unranked by MLB

Joel Guillen was our 2nd round selection 2 years ago in the Kris Giorgio draft. The 5'11 24 y/o 3rd baseman hailing from Kentucky can play both 1st and 3rd, where he will get the majority of his starts to. Joel Guillen is held back by 2 core things- one, he is older than practicably everyone in our prospect pool, unless Monte Harrison or Richie Martin can be considered prospects. Secondly, while exhibiting flashes of 5-tool potential, he struggles to keep it all together as for example while being an excellent fielder in the hot corner with a strong arm, he sometimes misses routine plays to first or 2nd solely via inaccuracy. He exhibits an advanced bat vs lefties, which makes him extremely valuable to our lineup, but does not portray the same level of talent when it comes to plate skills. Overall, Joel Guillen can likely hold down a spot at 3rd in the near future for the Miners, but will struggle to advance to anything past an okay player on a bad/mediocre team. Guillen will likely make his debut sometime this season.

                    #3: Billy Ruiz
#8 in our prospect pool, unranked by MLB

Billy Ruiz was our 2nd round pick way back in the first ever draft for the Miners. Ruiz, a 6'3 187 1st basemen out of Panama, projects as a future 1B/DH/RF in a pinch, with a well above average bat and amazing plate skills. He also exhibits a strong arm, hence the ability to play right field, but he is setback by him being pretty slow on the basepaths and in the field. Ruiz also possesses the ability to play catcher, as in he has played the position before prior to being drafted. So, in a very dire situation, Ruiz has the potential to be a multi-faceted player for the Miners. He suffers from the same syndrome as Guillen, as there's not much else for him to develop. He seems set in what he is, and that is a useful bench bat on a competitive team, or a starting 1st basemen for a team like the Miners. He is expected to come up in a years time.

                    #4 Johnny Pagan
                    #11 in our prospect system

Johnny Pagan is a strikeout mastermind. The 5'11 196 starting pitcher from Hawaii has never recorded less than 90 strikeouts in any season, including those shortened by injury or in a shorter schedule. The lefty pitcher has one of the best pitch combinations in the Miners system, with filthy stuff all the way 1 through 4, capped off by a world-class splitter that he collects most of his strikeouts with. Like others on this list, however, he has a few flaws. Most notably, he gives up a lot of hits due to mislocation or an ineffective break, and he gives up walks a bit above the mean. This coupled with his age, stamina and perception, places him as more of a long reliever/opener for any MLB team in the future, as he likely wouldn't get too deep in games.

                    #5: Fred Cochran
                    #13 in our prospect pool

Fred Cochran was drafted in our most recent draft, and could very easily turn some heads in the future. His main knock is he has wonderful plate skills, but struggles to make good contact with the ball, while simultaneously severely lacking power. All is not lost, however, as he is already graded at MLB-servicable for right field defense, and has some surprising speed to his 5'11 frame. The Canadian born fielder still is a few years away from an MLB debut but could very easily speed up those rankings with the right development, which he will likely get from new head of shop Joe Madden.

                    Next up: 2023 season begins.

The Dodgers (26-7) take 2 out of 3 in San Diego (13-21) by scores of 6-0, 3-1 and 4-5.

1 May 20- A 3 hit complete game shut out by Clayton Kershaw (6-0, 1.00) combined with a 4 run 1st inning set the tone for game and it was never close.

2 May 20- A 2 run home run by Will Smith (9) in the 7th gave the Dodgers the lead breaking a 1-1 tie.

3 May 20- Jimmy Nelson (1-1, 5.60) earned the loss, giving up 3 runs in the 6th in a relief appearance.

Dodgers return home for 6 games; 3 games against the Cubs (13-22) and Padres apiece. The Cubs come into the series in 4th place in NL Central 9 games behind the first place Reds. Projected pitching matchups:

                      David Price (2-3, 3.55) v Kyle Hendricks (3-1, 3.72)
                      Alex Wood (5-0, 0.94) v Yu Darvish (4-2, 3-12)

Nationals Extend Win Streak to Four Games

Both the Nationals and the Marlins got great performances from their starting pitchers as the game would go into extra innings. It took till the 13th inning for the Nationals to manage to get the W but In the end they extend they win streak to a modest four games and look to keep it going.

I know you add prospects every year. Do you just update names and likeness, or do you update attributes also?

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Do you mind sharing where you get the attributes you give to each player or do you wing it? I’m thinking about doing it this year.

It’s my own thought process so it’s winging it I guess more or less
