2022 Blue Jays Spring training checkup: Week 3

The Blue Jays are coming into form nicely, and even look good against the Phillies, who crushed them twice early in the season. They now sit at a dominant 11-2 in spring.

What was looking like a long decision process is starting to take form rapidly. Question marks are becoming checkmarks, and the possibility for GM TheWarmWind to move north early this year has popped up. A few more questions need to be answered, but it has been his habit to leave spring training once all positional battles are done and depth charts completed.

Lineup prediction update (DH RHP bottom of the order TBD):

SS Luis Sardinas - The best SS in the game continues to look great in the field and at the plate.

CF - Jerome Mauzoul - With the power of his bat showing up this week, it's hard not to get excited about Mauzoul. He looks fantastic in CF, like a true upgrade from Trout defensively.

RF - Bryce Harper - Performing as expected. Expectations were high, there's just nothing interesting to talk about.

LF (CF/RF) - Trey Bloom - I honestly never thought I'd see the day when Bloom was taking walks, fouling off balls to battle when back in the count, and hitting for average. All that, combined with his power, makes him the scariest hitter in MLB.

1B - Julian Montano - His average is a little worrying, but looking at the underlying stats, it's a combination of bad luck and pitchers respecting him more. His walks are up, and his strikeouts are on 8+ pitch counts. Opponents are respecting the 2021 playoff MVP. The talent is still there, and will appear over time.

3B (SS) - Xander Bogaerts - His versatility at the plate is back.

C - Jonathan Blanco/Ray Rodriguez - Blanco continues to be as expected, a singles and doubles machine while providing solid work behind the plate. Now that Rodriguez is signed to an equitable extension for both sides, he seems to have calmed down and settled in to focus on the game. Looking much more like with breakout rookie season with his smooth swing and high rates of contact.

DH (SS/2B/3B) - Daniel Franco (IF) - Franco seems to have shaken off his awful sophomore slump and looks much more ready for MLB pitching. He'll likely play the infield often when the DH is needed by other players. Floyd Moyer is in hot contention for this spot. He's faltered a bit with more ABs under his belt, but out of all the potential rookies on the 40 man this year he looks the most ready.

2B - Jeremy Funk - Making a good case to take over leadoff from Sardinias. More on that later.

    Bench:

LF Robberto Perez - Will likely get a lot of playtime over the season to keep that outfield healthy. Is also in the running for DH (I honestly hadn't considered it until writing this lol but it makes sense).

    C Blanco/Rodriguez

RF/LF Floyd Moyer OR SS/2B/3B Daniel Franco

C/1B Alfredo Moreno - Looks like he's keeping the momentum going from his callup last September. Having a third catcher on the bench does give me the option to DH the Catchers on their off days too, which brings even more intrigue to that vaunted DH spot.

    Depth Chart:

    IF

    1. Steve Roman (All) - Isn't out of the running to make the team yet, but there is nothing really special about this player either.

    2. Tanner Manzenillo (All) - Speed, solid fielding, and power make up for a lack of batting consistency

    3. Joel Julio (3B/1B) - The bat from last year is just gone, and it can't be chalked up to bad luck or sample size. Needs a visit back to the minors for some retooling.

    4. Matt Leone (3B/2B/SS) - Solid defense can't make up for the lack of performance at the plate.

    OF

Chris Manual is the only one worth talking about. Elite speed and proven a solid fielder in all three OF positions, Manuel is still a year away from being an MLB starter, but will serve well enough as a replacement in case of injury. If more are needed, the Blue Jays might want to consider trade instead of callups.

    Rotation:

Jose Lozano - Off to a rough start, but I think the two time and reigning Cy Young award winner deserves the benefit of the doubt. Seemed to be on the cusp last appearance, so I suspect another start or two and he'll be back in form.

Adam McMullen - On the other hand, McMullen looks on top of his game.

Fernando Chavez - It's great to see him come back from such a serious injury and surpass expectations.

Alonso Baez - Was just too good to ignore. Gilmore didn't lose this spot. Baez won it.

Miguel Blanco - Ditto. Was just too good. Now we'll see how he does when he has ownership of a game.

    Depth chart:

Ron Gilmore - Doesn't have the best spring stats, but his performance last year earns him first nod. Penciled in to LRP right now.

Troy Reyes - The right handed sinkerballer looks ready, and would be starting on any other team. Unfortunately for him, you have to be the best to crack this year's rotation.

Manuel Chavez - the knuckleballer can pitch some quality innings, but that's about the best I can say.

Pablo Gomez - After a fantastic rookie season, the movement and control artist seems to have lost his control. Requires some AAA time to get his groove back.

    Bullpen (shortened version):

    In consideration:

Joe Palmeiro - This fireballer shows promise as a late inning reliever in the future, but may be ready now for lower stress situations.

Steven Mota - Losing two good pieces this offseason was a blow to the bullpen, but Mota looks ready to slot in with fantastic stuff.

    Out:

Jose Franco - Looked so good last year after being called up, but is just awful this spring. Can't find the zone, early breaking pitches, and a 7.71 ERA do not earn you a spot on this team.

    Season road map:

The expectation is yet another year of winning, but it is a poor GM who doesn't plan for either scenario.

Trade plan if winning: While the likely trade plan if winning is to just stand pat, it's not entirely out of the question that the Jays may want to make a move to beef up the bullpen (though it is pretty beefy) or replace and injured player. These players are available for trade.

Andrez Lopez - A high potential CF who internal scouts are not so hot on. With Mauzoul extended and Manual an option, Lopez makes fine trade material for a high priced rental.

Jorge Hernandez - The Starter just isn't living up to his potential on the Jays. They want to trade him to a different team to give him a fresh start. Not for free though.

Jackie Ferris - The RF just doesn't look good out there under the Jays coaching. He also doesn't fit into the long term plan.

    Trade bait if losing:

Luis Sardinas - While an extension isn't entirely off the table, the signing of Bloom makes the Jays budget much tighter over the next few years. While letting the best SS in the game walk would be painful, Sardinas is replicable with in system solutions. It's very possible even if they are winning, Sardinas won't sign an extension and will walk at the end of the season. Putting him up for trade if loosing makes too much sense. With Funk up for free agency as well the issue becomes who will bat leadoff next year, but Funk will be far less expensive, and the Jays have less options for replacing 2B. It's clear that if the Blue Jays want to stay within their current financial plan, AT MOST only one can stay. The best plan is to sign neither for right now and maintain flexibility as long as possible.

Rodger Ambercrombie - Another "best", in this case closer. Ambercrombie is entering his arbitration years and is understandably asking for a lot more money. He deserves it, but the Jays have both Elez and Reyes locked up for much more reasonable sums, and they are going to be looking to save every penny possible over the next few years. The logic here is once again, he's replaceable.

Ron Gilmore - He'll be on his last year of arbitration next year anyways, and there is no way the Jays can afford to keep him past that. Chavez is already locked into a very team friendly contract, so the odds of Gilmore ever seeing the top half of the rotation are slim to none. Besides, the Blue Jays' system always seems to spit out a quality starter every year anyways.

Thank goodness for the Miami Marlins, lol (no offense to any Marlins fans!). The Mets appear to have found their 2021 stride, thanks in part to playing - and beating - the Marlins 7 times over the last 11 games. Sandwiched between series with Miami were two, 2-game series with the Kansas City Royals that saw the Mets take 3 out of 4 games.

Now 20-13 on the season, New York has moved within 2 games of the red hot Phillies for first place in the NL East.

        The Amazins

        Mets Sweep Giants
        July 3, 2024

The Mets took care of business this weekend, handling the Giants in three straight games thanks to strong starting pitching. Amir Garrett, Noah Syndergaard, and Walker Buehler all went at least six innings, with the latter two pitching into the 8th.

1B Steven Logan had himself a series as well, hitting for the cycle in Game 1 and following that up with another HR and 2B in the finale. He's really impressed this year, and essentially earned the starting job over recently traded D.J. Peterson. Logan was billed as a home run or bust type of hitter, but he has shown to be far more than that. He's hitting .279/.391/.977 with 35 RBI, 16 HR, 16 2B, and 36 BB in 256 PA. Quite the production from your #8 hitter.

The Mets will get a day off before heading back to Citi field to host the Angels and then the Braves before the All Star Break.

Yankees Set To Face 110 Win Cleveland Indians In ALCS

The ALCS is set as the Indians matched us by sweeping their ALDS opponent, the Blue Jays, as well. The key to this series for us could be the absence of Indians Ace Mike Clevinger to TJ surgery. The Yankee pitching staff was sharp vs Oakland and they’ll have to repeat that here against an Indians team that scored the most runs in MLB in 2020. Cleveland had our number in the regular season, going 5-1 against us.

The Indians will have home field advantage, so the series starts and if necessary, ends in Cleveland.

          Projected matchups:
G1: Gerrit Cole Vs Shane Bieber
G2: Trevor Bauer Vs Carlos Carrasco
G3: Masahiro Tanaka Vs Zach Plesac
G4: James Paxton Vs Adam Plutko

Giancarlo Stanton Returns, Aaron Hicks Dropped From ALCS Roster
Our lineup gains a huge reinforcement just in time to take on Cleveland, as Stanton returns from a Fractured Wrist. We have decided to carry an OF group of Judge, Stanton, Frazier, and Gardner into the ALCS. The alignment will be Frazier in LF, Judge in CF, and Stanton in RF. Hicks went 0-3 in his only ALDS action.

          NL Update:
98-64 Nationals Vs 108-54 Dodgers NLCS
The Nats continue their title defense taking on a still Bellinger-less Dodgers team who narrowly escaped an NLDS Game 4 exit to the Cubs.

            September 5th 2020

After losing three out of the four games against Colorado, then taking the first game of the series vs the Nats, in extra innings (which took 15 in total) the Mets behind Noah Syndergaard (13-5) went up against Patrick Corbin (15-7) at home.

It didnt take the Mets long to get on the board. In the bottom half of the 1st inning Pete Alonso jacked a two run homer his 47th of the season. Fast foward to the 3rd and New York would explode. After two runs scored earlier in the inning on a RBI single by McNeil, and another on a error by Trea Turner Whit Merrifield would step to the plate and hit 402' no doubt 3 run home run to center.

That would end Corbins night giving up 7 runs. In the 5th Starling Castro would get D.C. on the board when he crushed a hanging slider from Syndergaard his 14th. In the seventh inning the Mets

In the bottom of the 7th NY would add on more insurance on a RBI sungle by Syndergaard, and a bases loaded walk drawn by Pete Alonso.

The Nationals would score once more when Bonifacio hit a single to drive in Cabrera, but Bonifacio was thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch it into a double. And that would spell the end of the scoring for the rest if the night.

Another solid performance from Noah earned his 14th win if the year and give the Mets there Division leading 89th win. In the final game the Nationals looking to avoid the sweep and keep pace in the wild card hunt will send Max Scherzer (8-7) to the hill vs Marcus Stroman (12-7). First pitch is set for 1:10pm

                Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

North Siders head to Sunny California for 7 games Vs. the Padres and Dodgers to cap off their road trip.

The Cubs and Padres faced off again this time out west as AJ Puk took on Mackenzie Gore. Puk and Gore have struggled a bit in the early going as they have ERA over 9 and 8 respectively. Puk’s is a bit inflated due to giving up 7 runs in his first outing was great in this game. Puk went 7 innings and gave up just 3 hits as the Cubs saw their run of scoreless work end at 33 innings. Puk gave up a solo home run to Tatis Jr. but the Cubs would win with ease as they had 16 hits including Javy Baez hopefully turning the corner as he went 5 for 5. The Cubs hit 4 balls out of Petco as Contreras, Brennan Davis, Bryant and Baez all went yard in the 9-1 win. The Cubs are rolling with the 6th straight win but still sit 2.5 games behind the Brewers who are 12-2 on the year.

In the 2nd game the Cubs were able to got off to a fast start and put up big numbers in the 1st and 4th on their way to a 13-4 win. Jacob Degrom got his 2nd win of the year behind the offensive showing he gave up 4 runs but went 8 innings and struck out 9.

The Cubs had one more in San Diego before they traveled north to play the Dodgers. Kyle Hendricks was excellent as he went 8 innings and allowed one run. The Cubs were powered by home runs by Kris Bryant and Brennan Davis. The Cubs did lose Anthony Rizzo as he will be out a few days after taking pitch to the wrist. The Cubs believe that he will be able to avoid the IL and did not make any roster moves; Rafeal Guerra is expected to get most of the starts at 1st until Rizzo is back. The Cubs scored 27 runs in 3 games after the offense scuffled to start the year and now are tied with the Brewers for 1st in the Central.

The Cubs had 3 against the Dodgers to end their roadtrip. Brailyn Marquez was not able to keep his upswing going as he had improved in each start so far this year. Marquez was hit hard giving up 6 runs. The game would be a home run derby as 8 left the yard including Willson Contreras, Kris Bryant & two from Kyle Schwarber while Lux, Peters and Mondesi homered for LA. The Cubs were able to keep their win streak alive as they outlasted the Dodgers 12 to 7.

Medina would be on the mound next and won a squeaker 4-3 as he went 6i while only giving up a run on 2 hits. In the 3rd game the Cubs were able to get on top in the 3rd as Danny Santana homered to make it 5-2. Clase gave up a run in the 9th but held on for the save. Brennan Davis was put on the IR as he deals with a shoulder strain. The Cubs had a few options but decided to bring up Mariano Velaquez from AAA iowa. Victor Reyes has yet to find his bat this year as he hits in the .220s and Velaquez may get an extended showing to see if he can take the veterans spot on the club.

In the final game of the series Osca Colas held the Dodgers scoreless in 6 innings of work. He did allow 4 walks and 3 hits but struck out 7. The Cubs ran their win streak to 11 games. They will take a day off to travel and then face the Brewers at Wrigley.

Cleveland Gets Rocked, Yankees take 2-0 ALCS Lead

                  Game 1 Cole Vs Bieber
The Yankee bats would have their way with Shane Bieber, putting up 6 runs and forcing Bieber out after only 4 IP. Judge came up big with a 2 run double in the 2nd and then gave the verdict on Bieber’s outing in the 4th with a 2 run HR. Stanton made his return in a big way with an RBI triple and a Solo HR. It wasn’t the sharpest outing from Cole as he allowed 3 runs lasting just 5 innings but it got the job done. Green, Ottavino, Kahnle , and Montgomery would take it from there.
Yankees go on to win 8-3.

Game 2 Bauer Vs Carrasco. This one was a thriller.
Carrasco would put in a solid outing holding us to 1 run through 5.1 IP. It was a strange night for Bauer, as he racked up 8K’s while allowing 2 runs, 5 hits, and 3 walks through 3.1 IP. With multiple runners on in the 4th, Boone would go to his bullpen early calling on Tyler Clippard who would escape the jam. A combo of German, Kahnle, Wingenter, and Britton, would get us to the 9th still down 3-1.

Brad Hand would enter for Cleveland to try and tie up the series at 1-1. Judge worked a walk followed by a Torres strikeout. Stanton worked a walk of his own to put the tying run on 1st. Hand got Urshela to fly out for the 2nd out bringing Sanchez to the plate. On a 3-2 count Sanchez nearly chased a low slider to end the game, barely holding up for a walk.

Bases loaded 2 outs, ALCS G2 on the line. Up steps Clint Frazier, who PH for Gardner in the 7th. Frazier launches it 401 feet to left!!!! Go ahead GRAND SLAM with 2 outs in the 9th!!! 5-3 Yankees! Chapman would seal it up in the bottom half, completing the huge rally to take a 2-0 series lead.

                  Next:
A huge swing from Frazier sends us to Yankee Stadium for 3 games up 2-0. Any intimidation the Indians built up against us over the season is gone at this point.
2 wins to go and it’s WS time.
Game 3 and 4 projected matchups:
                  Tanaka Vs Zach Plesac
                  Paxton Vs Adam Plutko

                  NL Postseason Update:
Dodgers Vs Nationals NLCS Tied 2-2

                    The Amazins

Mets Win Series, Three Left Before the All Star Break
                    July 7, 2024

The Mets won 2 of 3 from the Angels, pushing their win total to 60, the first team in the MLB to do so. Dave Monahan shined in the series opener, throwing a complete game shutout, surrendering 3 hits and striking out 13. It was the best performance of a Mets pitcher so far this year.

Monahan has been involved in trade talks frequently this year. He's the fifth best pitcher in an incredibly deep organization in terms of pitching. It seems the Mets GM feels the 6th, 7th, 8th, pitcher could produce the same as Monahan, but that has proven to not be the case. Monahan leads the Mets in Quality Starts and just turned in the best performance for the staff on the year. The Mets would be ludicrous to get rid of him in a year they're trying to win a World Series.

The Mets host the last place Braves for 3 games before the AllStar Break.

Mets Shuffle Bullpen, Shipman Out - Roy In

The Barney Shipman experiment has ended as fast as it began. Giving up 5 runs in 3 innings, he sports a 23.63 ERA and a 3 WHIP. In a bullpen that desperately needs consistent arms, that's just not going to cut it. Steve Roy has been recalled.

Don't be surprised if Shipman is back at some point. The Mets are desperately looking for production in the pen, especially with guys like Shoemaker, Alvarez, and Eovaldi struggling. The list of options at the end of games is getting short.

                      September 17th

With their own fate in there hands and the Magic number down to one game. The Mets looked to shut the door on any chances Washington thought of catching up. As the Nats were off today all they could do was sit at home and watch and hope..

The Mets looking to take the third game in the series against Miami and after dropping the first, in typical Mets fashion (well this season at least) after being ahead lost 4-3. In the second game the Metropolitans didn't put up any great offensive numbers, but very little was needed for the reigning CY award winner. Jacob eGrom took care of the game with relative easy going the distance while only giving up four hits, on way to his 19th win of the season. With the win Jacob put himself just a bit further ahead in the race for this years CY award ahead of Walker Buehler.

So with the postseason on the horizon, Noah Syndergaard took the bump. This time with more offensive help behind him and with a stellar performance of his own, 8 IP 0-R, 3-BB, 6-Ks the Mets sealed up the National League East. Pete Alonso and Whit Merrifield both hit homers to help in the effort for the 6-0 win.

                      September 18th-20th

With the playoffs coming the Mets took on the Gallo-less Rangers (who for some reason dealt him at the deadline). With nothing left to play for but pride, the Rangers gave as good as they got in this series. In game one the Mets put up 6, Conforto who recently found his way back into the lineup helped with a three run home run. Texas tried to make the comeback by scoring 3 in the 7th fell just short. Adam Ottavino in his new co-shared job (with Justin Wilson) earned the save his 8th of the year.

In game two Thomas Szapucki went a strong 6 innings on his way to his 4th win. Justin Wilson closed it out in the 9th getting his 8th save of the year.

In game three it was a high powered fest. Elvis Andrus started things off by hitting the first of his two homeruns on a hanging curvball. Down two - zip in the bottom of 3rd the Mets took the lead on two 2 run home runs from McNeil & Alonso. Texas tied it up the very next inning on a opposite field two run home run by Odor.

Then in the top of the 6th Elvis left the building again to give Texas the lead 5-4. Things would remain quiet till the 8th inning. With one out and no-one one Pete Alonso hit a no doubt bomb to the upper deck to tie the game up, his Major League leading 50th. Then with two outs in the inning Amed Rosario flashed some power to put the Mets ahead, his 13th of the year. Justin Wilson came on in again and earned his second save in as many days.

Up next are the last two series for the season, at Philadelphia and then in Miami. Both teams are out of the Wild Card race, but that won't stop them from trying to ding up New York. With a outside chance the Mets still have hope of getting home field advantage, but are chasing the Dodgers for that spot. LA (6 gms left) with the best record 102-54 have a firm grip on it. And with a 5-2 record against the Mets this season they are all but assured for winning any tie breaker against New York (7 games left). The Mets might try and give some starters some rest, but Esteves isn't letting on for now how he will manage this last week.

Just got a career first: spring training, 6 pitcher perfect game.

I'm excited for my next game. Miguel Blanco gets his first career start as a starter penciled in the rotation. He's started games before, but only as a late September looky loo, never as a guy whose starter job is his to lose. Let's see how he handles the pressure.

Cardinals finish Spring at 12-17..ready to start new season

The Cardinals quest to repeat as World Series Champions got off to a rocky start, as they completed Spring Training winning just 12 times in 29 games. But thankfully, that record has nothing to do with winning pennants and championships.

The Cardinals will head into the 2027 relatively healthy, although Devon Snow pulled a back muscle 3 days prior to the end of Spring Training and about a week before Opening Day, so the team has yet to place him on the IL, as they are hopeful he'll be ready to go on Opening Day. If not, look for Zach Jackson to get the start behind the dish as he will be Snow's battery mate to begin the season. Cristobol Lorenzo will likely be the backup catcher should Snow be placed on the IL.

The Cardinals did see Nolan Gorman and Michael Wacha each spend time on the shelf during the spring, but both are healthy and ready to go. In fact, once returning from the IL, Gorman would homer in each of the 6 games he participated in, so it appears his knee injury isn't slowing his progress. Wacha had a strained oblique, the same injury that kept him off the playoff roster last year, so that is a concern, but he's expected to get the ball when its his turn in the rotation.

The Cardinals 2027 Opening Day Lineup will be:

                          CF - Harrison Bader
                          SS - Samuel Franco
                          1B - Brendan McKay
                          LF - Juan Fabregas
                          RF - J.J. Bleday
                          C - Devon Snow
                          3B - Nolan Gorman
                          2B - Kolten Wong
                          Pitcher Spot

                          C - Zach Jackson
                          IF - Tommy Edman
                          IF - Paul DeJong
                          OF - Eddie Ortiz
                          OF - C.J. McElroy

                          The rotation will be:

                          Kyle Funkhouser
                          Jack Flaherty
                          Junior Fernandez
                          Dakota Hudson
                          Michael Wacha

                          The bullpen:

                          Giovanny Gallegos
                          Richard Rodriguez
                          Zack Burdi
                          Jose Alvarado (L)
                          Adam Cimber
                          Jordan Hicks
                          Corey Littrell (L)

                          Closer:

                          Roberto Osuna

The Cardinals will start the 2027 campaign in Cincinnati for a 3 game series against the Reds.

Let the quest for back to back World Series Championships begin!

Indians Battle Back In Game 3, Bring Series To 2-1

We would face an uphill battle from the start as Tanaka left in the 2nd with an arm injury that luckily turned out to be nothing. Montgomery would relieve him but only lasted 2.2 IP allowing 4 runs. Down 5-1 in the 4th, we get back into it as Gardner would come up big PH for Ryan Goins with a game tying grand slam. Unfortunately it would go to waste as our offense went silent the rest of the way, and Cleveland would punch through with a 2 run 8th.
                            Indians Win 7-5.

Going to Montgomery over German in the 2nd proved to be Boone’s first real mistake of the postseason. The Yankee bullpen has seen heavy usage through the first 3 games, only getting 5 innings from Cole in G1 and less then 4 from both Bauer and Tanaka. We’ll desperately need length from Paxton in G4.

Yankees To Tweak Lineup Ahead Of Game 4
Voit, 3 for 15 this postseason, will be benched with Andujar shifting to 1B. Gardner/Frazier will fill Andujar’s DH spot to get all of Judge, Stanton, Gardner, and Frazier in the lineup at once. Gardner and Frazier have been too hot this postseason to keep benching one of them.

                            Will Gary Sanchez be benched?
It’s been an ugly postseason run for Sanchez so far, going 1 for 18 with 7 K’s, and 2 GIDP. Combine that with multiple passed balls on what would’ve been strikeouts, and the one base runner he threw out in G3 being on a bounced throw to the opposite side of the base, he hasn’t contributed much of anything through these 6 postseason games.

Next: Game 4, Paxton Vs Adam Plutko
