Juan Fabregas named NL Player of the Month for May

Juan Fabregas was named the National League player of the month for the month of May. Fabregas hit .340 with 8 homeruns and 21 RBI's over the month.

Fabregas who missed significant time the past two seasons due to knee injuries, is hoping to play a full campaign in 2027 and has been the catalyst for the offense for the Cardinals. Manager Mike Matheny has been giving Fabregas more days off than one would normally expect in an attempt to keep the 31 year old healthy this year and available for second half of the season and hopefully postseason run.

      So much fun.

BTW, for DJ, your Mets have Alonso on the bench. Dominic Smith is the starting 1B. Through 11 games, Smith is hitting .405 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs -- again, in 11 games. He's off to an unreal start. And I'm heading to New York to see him after a four-game series in Miami.
That's interesting. Smith does have that potential; he never really progressed in my franchise, while Alonso did and is leading MLB in HRs currently.

Cardinals acquire Raisel Iglesias from Orioles for prospect

The Cardinals have made their first trade of the 2027 season and its no surprise that it involves an acquisition to try and stabilize the bullpen.

The Cardinals have acquired 35 RHP Raisel Iglesias from the Orioles in exchange for OF prospect Tristen Lutz.

Raisel Iglesias had been the closer for the Orioles the last 3 seasons, but this year he moved into the setup role as turned the closer job over to Tanner Duncan. Iglesias had 37 saves last year and 32 in 2025. In 2024 he saved 17 after being moved into the role late in the season.

Thus far in 2027 Iglesias has a 1.52 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP in 23 2/3 innings of work. He has racked up 25 strikeouts in those innings as well as 4 saves and 7 holds.

Iglesias will take over the setup role vacated by Jordan Hicks when he was transitioned to the closer role after Roberto Osuna's injury. Osuna isn't expected back until after the All-Star break.

Injuries and poor performance have hampered the Cards bullpen this year, but hopefully this acquisition will help stabilize it and make it as solid as it was last year in the World Series Title run.

To make room for Iglesias on the 26 man roster and in the pen, the Cardinals placed Corey Littrell on the 15 day IL for back stiffness that had kept him out the past 3 days.

While I don't think it will happen immediately, don't be surprised to see the Cardinals search the market for more MLB veteran relievers to try and resolve their bullpen issues.

Haven't posted much re: my franchise, but a quick update:

After winning the AL West handily, the Mariners defeated the Red Sox in the ALDS 3 games to 1.

The series defining game came in game 3, with the series tied at 1-1. After getting blown out 10-3 in game 2, the Mariners trailed 2-1 in the top of the 9th inning. With pinch runner Sam Haggerty on 2nd after a timely steal, JP Crawford delivered a 2-out, full count single that tied the game at 2-2.

A back and fourth pitching battle ensued, all the way to the 18th inning, where Evan White smashed his 2nd home run of the series over the center field wall. Alex Reyes shut the door in the bottom of the 18th, to put the M's up 2-1 in the series.

Game 4 was supposed to be a pitching battle, as Red Sox ace Eduardo Rodriguez (Chris Sale has been injured for the season) was on the hill. He was set to face off again ground ball specialist Marco Gonzales. ERod was huge for the BoSox in their wildcard matchup against the Cleveland's, going 6.1 with 8 Ks and no earned runs.

Unfortunately for the Sox, after striking out the side in the 1st, Rodriguez was completely lit up by the M's, lasting only 4.1 innings, and giving up 8 earned runs. The Mariners would go on to take the series, winning the game 11-6.

Other surprises around the division series included the wildcard champion Mets beating the Dodgers (Walker Buehler, 0-2, 5.40 ERA), the Cubs sweeping the Nats, and the Twins dispatching the Yankees in 5 games, with Gerrit Cole going 0-2.

            Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Fatigue a Factor as North Siders play 20 games in 20 days
The Cubs were in Washington for the last 3 games in a 4 game series & things did not get off to a good night as they gave away game 1 in a 4-5 loss. The Cubs rebounded as they took a 7-1 victory as DeGrom took down his former foes with 7 innings of work as he allowed 3 hits and struck out 10. The game also saw newly signed Jose Arbeu go yard in his first plate appearance. 37 year old slugger was able to groove a fastball to right field. The Cubs and Nats had their aces on the mound in the final game of the series as Hendricks took on Strasburg. Kyle would get the better of the match up as he went 7inings and struck out 5 as he did not allow a run. The game was tied going into the 6inning before Danny Santana was able to drive in Baez for the only run of the game. Emmanuel Clase also got his league leading 28th save and also entered the records books as he became the first cub to save 28 consecutive games.

The Cubs made the short trip to the Bronx to play 3 against the Yankees, who lead the AL east by 3 games over the Rays. The Cubs would have an up and down series as they could not get past Gerrit Cole in the first game, a 2-4 loss. Cole was dominant as he allowed just 2 runs and struck out 8. The Cubs won the middle game 10 to 5 as Adonis Medina was able to put together a solid start as he went 6 innings without allowing a run and the Cubs broke out to the early lead. Medina was left in too long as he gave up 3 runs in the 7th and could not get out of the inning but the bullpen did just enough to win the game. Colas would pitch strong in the 3rd game but ultimately the bullpen would give up the game in the 7th as Edward would earn the L. The Cubs would go on to lose the series as they were shut out in a 0-3 loss.

The Cubs had a quick turnaround as they would face the other New York team but this time at Wrigley. The Cubs would end up splitting the series as they lost the first 2 in heart breaking fashion but salvaged the split. Degrom was back on the mound for the Cubs and looked to get a win against his former team but it was not in the cards as they took the 3-2 lead into the 8th but Pete Alonzo would hit his 2nd home run of the day to push the Mets past 4-2. Kyle Hendricks looked to get the Cubs back on track and did his job as he allowed 1 run in 7i as the cubs took a 2-1 lead into the 9th. Clase would end his perfect streak though, as he got 2 outs in the 9th but then allowed runners at the corners. Jeff McNeil would be the hero as he smacked a ball into center field. The ball held in the air just out of the diving reach of Brennan Davis; Davis made the aggressive play to go for the diving catch to end the game but by coming up short it allowed the winning run to round the bases from first. The Cubs would go 1-2-3 as they lost their 4th straight and now are tied with the Brewers for the NL Central lead.

The Cubs welcomed Kyle Schwarber off the IR and hope the slugger will lift a faltering line up. The Cubs optioned Irving Martens back to triple A but the youngster did have a solid go of it as he hit .279 with 2 home runs in 20 games while Schwarber was out. The Cubs also made the move to trade JB Bukauskas and a minor league closer to the Rangers for two prospects. The Cubs back end starters have not been great as Medina and JB have ERA over 5 in Marquez’s absence. While JB did slightly better in his call up the Cubs chose to go with Medina down the stretch and had no choice to trade one of the two as both were out of options and not likely to pass through waivers. Rangers are currently in the hunt for the Wildcard as they try to keep pace with the Angels who own the best record in baseball. The Cubs were able to get a closer back, Satchel Warren who is towering at 6’7 and an offensive catcher in George Blanco. Both will start their time with the Cubs at AA Tennessee.

AJ Puk was able to end the Cubs' spell as the Cubs won the third game 6-1. Adonis Medina got the Cubs the split with his second straight solid start where he would go 7 innings and give no no runs.. Miguel Amaya hit his 5th home run of the year that was just enough to squeak the Cubs by 2-1

Teams Make Big splashes ahead of Trade Deadline
There was big news around baseball as two AL contenders looked to strengthen their team. The first news of the day was the Red Sox trading for 3 players as they try to catch the Rays and Yankees. Boston would receive Joey Lucceshi, Starling Marte and Jonathon India in exchange for Micheal Conforto. Boston is currently out of the playoff picture as it stands on July 4th but the move and the addition of Chris Sale returning to form after an injury sidelined him for the first third of the season. The other big news came from the southside as the White Sox traded a trio prospect for Brady Singer. The Royals are in a sell off mode as their plan to contend for a playoff spot did not come to fruition after acquiring David Bote and Zach Grienke in the off season. Singer will be featured as the Ace of the White Sox staff as they battle the Indians who lead them by 2 games in the Central. The Royals were able to obtain infielder Jeremiah Jackson and a top 50 outfielder

The Cubs will look to finish off their grueling stretch as Brailyn Marquez will make his first start since breaking his forearm in mid May as they take on the Pirates.

Kyle Funkhouser out 2+ months due to shoulder tear

              The injury bug strikes again.

The Cardinals have placed ace Kyle Funkhouser on the 60 Day IL due to a tear in his right shoulder. Funkhouser exited after just 14 pitches in his start against the Cubs on Saturday night.

Funkhouser didn't have the most prominent of stats, as he was 2-2 on the year but yielded a 3.12 ERA and was the anchor for this staff. Now the Cardinals are just hoping to have him back around September and hope to still be in contention for the playoffs then.

The Cardinals have been hit hard this year with injuries as they are currently waiting on Jack Flaherty to return this week as he will fill the void left by Funkhouser.

              Tough year just got tougher.

Cardinals split 4 game series with Cubs

The Cardinals and Cubs split their 4 game series over the weekend with the Cardinals winning Thursday and Sunday, while the Cubs took Friday and Saturday.

The Cardinals earned the split despite injuries wreaking havoc on their pitching staff as they saw ace right hander Kyle Funkhouser leave Saturday night's start after just 14 pitches due to a shoulder issue.

Harrison Bader and Juan Fabregas did the heavy lifting for the offense as did Eddie Ortiz in his 2 starts in the series. Bader collected 6 hits, 3 stolen bases, and a pair of RBI's in the series, while Fabregas hit 3 homeruns while driving in 7 in just 3 games. Eddie Ortiz earned 4 hits in 6 at bats with a walk and 3 RBI's.

Samuel Franco continues to struggle as he was hitless with 6 strikeouts in just 3 games while also committing 2 errors during the series.

The Cardinals will travel to New York to face the Mets tomorrow night for a 3 game series that ends on Wednesday. The Cards are off Thursday and Friday in a scheduling quirk before facing the Pirates in a Saturday/Sunday 2 game weekend series.

Cardinals sweep Mets to extend win streak to 4

The Cardinals swept the Mets to start the week and have now extended their winning streak to 4 games. The Cardinals dominated this series scoring a total of 37 runs over the 3 games.

The pitching was effective although its easy to pitch when your offense is scoring an average of 12 runs per game.

The Cardinals trail the Reds by 3 1/2 games currently.

The Cardinals are off Thursday and Friday as they travel to London to face the Pirates in a 2 game weekend series before returning home to play Tuesday night.

                    Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Cubs Look to End their Marathon Stretch on Good Note
The Cubbies are eyeing the calendar as they have a long waited off day ahead but will have to get through 3 more games against the Pirates before that. The Pirates are currently 2 games under .500 and 5 games out of the wildcard spot. The Cubs got a boost as Brailyn Marquez came off the IR on July 4th and was able to get his first start the next day in over a month. Brailyn was amped up and showed little rust as he held the Pirates at bay and had a perfect game going through 6 innings. Pittsburgh would get a hit on the scoreboard in the 7th and eventually drove in 2 runs but they were out matched by the Cubs offense that got hits early and often in the 9-2 win. In the middle game of the series the Cubs were up against Joe Musgrove who came in with the 2nd best ERA in the National League. The Pirates struck early with a 2 run home run against Degrom but the Cubs would fight back and rough up the Pirates starter for 8 runs in 4 innings as the Cubs won in a route 15-3. Danny Santana lead the way with a 3 run home run and a double that drove in 3 later in the game. In the final game Oscar Colas struggled out the gate but held on enough to be on line for the win as it was 6-4 in the 6th when Colas was spelled for the bullpen. Andre Chacin would give up the lead in the 8th but Kris Bryant was able to win in walk off fashion with a 2 run home run. Bryant has struggled this year and saw his batting line dip to .251 at one point in June but has quietly strung together hits to raise it closer to .260. The Cubs were able to finish their longest stretch of the season going 13-7

After the long stretch of games the Cubs cancelled all team activities on monday before boarding the plan to face the Mets in New York. On TuesdayThe Cubs will be back in action for 6 games before getting more rest with the All Star break. Kyle Hendricks was on the bump for the first game and had a rough game based on his standard this season. Hendricks gave up a 3 run home run in the first to Pete Alonso but was able to get through 6 innings. The Cubs offense was led by Oscar Colas hitting one home run and driving in 5 on the day. Clase was able to clean up Rowan Wick’s mess to get the 2 out save in the 8-6 win. Hendricks was able to improve his record to 13-1 on the year and still sports a ERA under 1.70. In the 2nd game AJ Puk kept his solid season going as he went 7innings to get his 8th win of the year. Puk allowed a lot of men on base and flirted with trouble but held the Mets in check in the 4-2 win. Bryant continued his hot start to July as he went 3 for 5 with a home run. In the final game of the series, Brailyn Marquez helped to keep the Mets in check while the Cubs got an early lead. Marquez struck out 9 and kept the game mets off the board until he ran into trouble with 1 out. After giving up a walk, single and another walk the bases were juiced and JD Davis made the Cubs pay with a grandslam that ran Marquez from the game in the 7th. The Cubs were able to win Jose Abreu’s hot bat. Abreu continues to be a spark against lefties; in 11 games he has 11 hits and 2 home runs and has kept his BA hovering between .400 and 500. The Cubs ran their winning streak to 8 games.

The Cubs would Wrap up the first half of the season against the Blue Jays and got off to a great start with Degrom giving up an early home run but then taking Toronto to task as he struck out 11 batters in 7 innings, including striking out 7 consecutive men in the middle innings in a 7-1 win. Degrom has struggled with giving up the long ball but has been near automatic as he gets his record to 11-1. The Cubs would end up ending their winning streak at 9 games as Medina could not make it 3 good starts in a row as the Cubs couldn’t keep pace in the 4-6 loss. The Cubs would end the series on a high note as Oscar Colas got his second complete game of the year and also the shutout in the 8-0 victory. Chicago rested many of it’s starters but the bench players produced including Christopher Morel who hit his first grand slam in his young career.

Boston the Host for 2024 All Star Game
After having as many as two participants the Cubs were not featured in the home run derby. The Cubs set the record for home runs in a season a year ago but has fallen to the middle of the pack. A former Cub did take home the hardware as Ian Happ was able to use the short porch in right at Fenway to beat Pete Alonso. The Cubs fans can only cringe as they see what they let walk away as Happ has produced as the centerpiece of the Twin’s offense.

The Cubs’ pitching staff were well represented in the Mid Summer Classic and Hendricks got the nod as the NL Starter and Jacob Degrom and Emmanuel Clase were also selected. No position players were selected as Wilson Contreras was snubbed as won the fan vote Omar Narvaez and Alex Collins was selected over him. The trio of Cubs hurlers performed well as the NL won the contest 8-5.

The Cubs sit first in the NL at 65-32 and are second overall in Baseball as only the Angels have more wins. The Cubs will have to face a much tougher test to keep hold of the Central as Milwakuee sits 3.5 games behind them - the lowest lead the Cubs have had in the central at this point in the season during the last 3 seasons. The Cubs will kick off the second half of the year against Tampa Bay at Wrigley Field

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

                      I've got a huge problem.

I successfully won the world series in year 1 of my Mariners franchise (broke the drought, and won the 1st in team history!!!), squeaking by the Twins in 6 games in the ALCS, then coming back from an 0-2 deficit to win the world series in 6 games over the Cubbies.

What's the problem? Like many GM's/Owners, I've fallen in love with my players/prospects, and am definitely overvaluing them/don't want to move them..

My lineup has actually progressed quite well, with JP Crawford and Shed Long having solid 2020's, 1B is covered with Evan White and (2020 AL MVP!!!) Dan Vogelbach. I've got a couple of areas that I *could* attempt to upgrade though, which are mainly behind the plate (Zack Collins/Luis Torrens), and my rotation (Marco Gonzales, Kikuchi, Logan Gilbert-who will debut, and Justus Sheffield, who earned a spot).

Why is that a problem? It's that I've got the prospect capital to make a big trade, but can't bring myself to do it. I could target Blake Snell, but that'd leave me with 4 lefties and 1 righty in the rotation. I could also just go out and sign Trevor Bauer, but he's looking for a 5 year deal @$22 mil/year. I don't trust that, at 30, that contract will age well. Apart from the Rays making a move, there are only a few teams with top of the rotation guys that I don't consider to be potential playoff teams. Maybe I've just got to piece together a rotation, and wait for a few of them to fall out of the race?

All in all, my franchise is in a pretty solid place right now, and I might just have to hold off on making any significant trades for a bit. I don't like the idea of burning a bunch of money this offseason, when 2022 has a bunch of huge names (Lindor, Correa, Seager, Bryant, Syndergaard, Baez, Story, etc.), that could help replace Kyle Seager's expiring contract.

Good problems to have, I suppose, and definitely adding to how immersed I am into this franchise

                        Jay’s Cubs Wrap Up: 2024

Chicago Kicks Off 1st Series of 2nd Half at Home Against the Rays
Tampa Bay came to town after the all star break, the Rays are currently 1st in the AL East & are looking to old off the Yankees who scuffled into the all star break and the Red Sox who are looking to move into a playoff spots with their key additions a few weeks ago. The Cubs made the call to reset their rotation and had the professor leading the way in the first game back. Hendricks arguably had his worst game of his impressive year as he may have been dealing with pitching in the All Star game; Hendricks gave up a 2 run home run to start the game and would end up giving up 5 total but the Cubs were able to regain the lead on a 2 run home run by Anthony Rizzo in the 8th 6-5. Even with getting roughed up Hendricks still is the leader in ERA with a 1.87 mark.

The Cubs will also have to contend with another injury as Willson Contreras came up lame on a double in the 5th and had to be removed. The injury was reported to be a mid hamstring strain but the Cubs will be without their primary catcher as Chicago chose to place him on the 10 day IL. Miguel Amaya will move into line up full time; Amaya has shown power this year in limited action but has struggled with consistency. The Cubs weighed using Schwarber as an emergency catcher but decided against due to the Schwarber’s own knee issues that kept him out of the lineup this year for nearly two months. 24 year old Israel Pineda will get the call up as backup catcher.

The Rays were able to keep the score low in the 2nd game as they did just enough against Degrom to stay in it. Degrom struck out 11 but also gave up another homerun, this time a 2 run shot. The game would remain tied until the bullpen gave up the lead in the 9th and could not produce a rally.
In the final game Oscar Colas contributed to the win on the mound and at the plate. He was able to go 7 innings and strike out 8 while he allowed 2 walks and a hit but left the Rays searching for runs. The Cubs were up early 1-0 in the 4th when Brennan Davis was able to reach on an error. Colas was up next and took a 2-1 pitch to right field for his 8th home run of the year. That would be all the cubs needed as Clase earned his 34th save on the year.

The Cubs will suit up again on Monday as they will face off against another team leading their division, this time in the form of the Diamondbacks.

Cardinals drop both games of 2 game series to Pirates

The Cardinals dropped both games of a mini two game series to the Pirates over the weekend to fall to 5 1/2 games behind the Reds.

The Cardinals once again were bitten by the bullpen bug as in both games the Cardinals led heading into the 8th inning and in both games lost the lead. On Saturday it was Zack Burdi who blew the lead and on Sunday it was Jose Quijada.

After an off day on Monday to travel home, the Cardinals will host the Nationals for a 3 game series.

Cardinals sign Jonny Venters to 1 year deal

The Cardinals have signed LHP Jonny Venters to a one year deal worth $1.5M.

The 39 year old was part of the bullpen last year in the Cardinals World Series Championship run, but decided that he didn't want to pitch in 2027, but the Cardinals have changed his mind.

Venters will be asked to help stabilize a bullpen that has been consistently inconsistent and the issue is only getting worse. Throw in injuries to Roberto Osuna and Corey Littrell and the inconsistency becomes the norm.

Venters will be in the bullpen as the Cardinals open their series with the Nationals on Tuesday.

Cardinals losing streak stands at 6

The Cardinals have now lost 6 straight games after dropping last night's game to the visiting Orioles and now find themselves at .500 (38-38) and 8 games behind the Central Division leading Reds.

Injuries have certainly played a part in this rocky season, but on this current losing streak, the Cardinals have failed at hitting, pitching, and defense. You name it, they can't do it at the moment.

Starting pitchers have high ERA's, Brendan McKay is hitting .250, Franco is hitting .220, and about the only two good hitters in the lineup are Fabregas and Gorman. The bullpen continues to blow leads and let close games get away. Callups aren't helping so likely need outside help until the likes of Osuna, Gomber, and Funkhouser return sometime in late July/August.

Not sure what the answer is at the moment, but something needs to happen or they are going to find themselves out of the race before the all-star break in 3 weeks.

                                Cardinals trade for Gwang-Hyun Kim

The Cardinals have made another trade for pitching prior to the month of July, this time acquiring LHP Gwang-Hyun Kim from the Rangers for 2B/IF Devin Mann and RHP Griffin Roberts.

The Cardinals are desperate for help in pitching as injuries and inconsistency is really playing havoc on the staff. With Austin Gomber and Kyle Funkhouser both out until August and the young arms not being effective at the major league level, the Cardinals needed to make a move if they want to stay in contention for the playoffs.

Kim brings a 6-4 record with a 3.75 ERA this year for the Rangers. He's in the final year of his contract so the Cardinals don't have to concern themselves with Kim on the payroll after this season.

The Rangers are getting 28 year old Devin Mann who can play all around the infield and was thought to compete with Tommy Edman for the everyday 2nd baseman job after this year as its expected Wong will retire.

RHP Griffin Roberts is a 27 year old high velocity pitcher that has been in the big leagues a few appearances and was the closer at AAA Memphis. Roberts has good stuff but struggles with command. When on, he has great swing and miss stuff, but when he's not locating, he is prone to giving up the long ball.

We'll see how this trade turns out for both teams as Kim is expected to major his Cardinal debut on Tuesday in Chicago against the Cubs.
