Mariners (4-3) swept by Guardians (3-4)

Our first series on the road did not go as planned as we went into Cleveland and they broke out the brooms on us. We are already done with our season series against the Guardians and its a good thing as we went 1-6 against them.

In the first game a gem by Logan Gilbert was wasted. He went 7 innings allowing 6 hits 1 run and striking out 15 batters. He left on the winning side of things as a solo home run by Jared Kelenic had the Mariners up 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. However with closer Sewald needing a day of rest they turned to Diego Castillo and he did not have it. He would give up a lead off double to Rosario, walked Ramirez, Bell with an RBI single to tie it and Naylor an RBI single to win it and just like that without recording an out the Guardians win game 1 of the series 3-2

Second game of the series much like the first. The Mariners got 7 shutout innings from Marco Gonzales but they did not score themselves and the game was 0-0 going into the 10th. In the top of the 10th the Mariners would get a run on an RBI Sac Fly from Crawford to take the 1-0 lead. However in the bottom of the 10th first batter up Myles Straw would rope a double to tie the game. Then closer Paul Sewald would come in, Walk Kwan, get Rosario to strike out. Then an walk Ramirez to load them up and then Josh Bell would hit a deep sac fly and the Mariners pen blows another game and the Guardians win 2-1.

The final game just seemed like the last two losses sucked all the life out of the team. George Kirby was awful for his second straight start giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks over 5 innings. Flexen came in and was no better giving up another 3 runs over 3 innings. The offense was flat and the Guardians complete the sweep with a 9-2 win

Losing the 3 games moved the Mariners to (4-6) on the year as they get ready tomorrow to start a 3 game set in Chicago against the Cubs (3-6)

Later on I will have a 10 game team recap with a look at the stats and such.

Santana's Big Series extends Pirates streak to 8

Ji-Man Choi went down in the first inning of the first game in the series. The injury (torn pectoral) came as Choi slid to stop a ground ball. He was in obvious pain after the play, was removed from the game and after the game, Pittsburgh learned that he will miss 1-2 months.

That is unfortunate for Choi who was having a pretty good start to the year but Carlos Santana got an opportunity and did not miss it.

Santana had a hit in each game, three total home runs, 7 rbi's and scored 4 runs. The Pirates were in command for much of each game even the close games didn't feel like Pittsburgh was ever in danger of losing.

Mason Martin is being called up from Indianapolis to spell Santana when he needs a day off.

Pittsburgh will now travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies (5-11) in a three game series.

** I am switching to legend difficulty for pitching which is where I believe I was in 22. We are currently leading the league in strikeouts (pitched) which is nice but my pitching staff isn't very good lol

**** one more...everytime I advance days in franchise I get the same notifications at the top...any way to fix that?

Mariners 10 Game Review

Figured every 10 games I will post the stats as we progress.

10 games in our feelings are its early and the pitching will come around. The biggest concern we have is the lack of offense and super stars on this team. We need to find a way to either pick up a super star at the trade deadline to pair with Julio assuming we have the capital to do so. Or we need to get one in the off-season. Right now without looking at the list the first name that comes to mind that will be a free agent is Ohtani. While it would be great to pair him and Julio together with many teams likely to be in on him we are not sure we will have the budget room to get it done. But that is a concern for a later date

Does anyone else have the Blue Jays constantly DFA’ing Yusei Kikuchi at the start of every Franchise mode?

I do a lot of testing until a roster drops and every Franchise I begin has the Jays DFA’ing him. I also use 30 team control but on the few times I didn’t, they still did it.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Mariners (4-6) take two of three from Cubs (3-6) in Chicago

After getting swept by the Guardians the Mariners were in much need of a good showing and starting to turn things around in the windy city

The first game of the series say Luis Castillo taking the mound looking for his first win of the season in his third attempt. He was brilliant. He throw 7 strong innings allowing only 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 11. The offense was lead by Jared Kelenic who was moving into the leadoff shot and he went 2 for 5 with a HR and 3 RBI. The Mariners would get a much needed win 6-1

The second game is one we felt we really let get away. Robbie Ray who has been great in every start so far was strong again. He went 7 allowing 4 hits, 1 unearned run and strike out 11. But he offense just could not get the big hit. Despite 10 hits they left 8 guys in scoring position and 6 were in scoring position with less then 2 outs. The game was 1-1 going into the 9th when Gott came in to pitch and gave up a double to Swanson and then a RBI single to Bellinger and the Cubs took home the win 2-1

The rubber game of the series turned into a bullpen game for the Mariners. Gilbert scheduled to start would be knocked out by the second batter of the game after a line drive hit him and caused a bruise. The Mariners had to throw a mix of Chris Flexen, Matt Festa, Matt Brash, Andres Munoz and Paul Sewald and it seems to work out as they combined on a 8 hit shutout. Seattle would get two runs in the 5th on a AJ Pollock 2 run homer his team leading 5th home run of the year and the Mariners won 2-0 and took the series

The Mariners move to 6-7 on the year and the Cubs fall to 4-8

Next up the Mariners (6-7) return home for the start of a 9 game home stand with the Rockies (5-8) in town.

Cubs split 4 game series with San Diego to start June but the big news is the Cubs have DFA Eric Hosmer. Hosmer has hit into a league high 13 Double Plays and struggled as of late at the plate. Calls up have recalled 1B power hitter Matt Mervis.

Cardinals continue upward trend, take series from Guardians in Cleveland

The Cardinals (34-23) took two games of a thee-game series against the Guardians in Cleveland to begin the week. The series win and the Cubs getting swept by the Reds gives the Cardinals a 4 game lead in the NL Central.

Paul Goldschmidt hit safely in both games he played extending his hitting streak to 19 games. Recently recalled Nolan Gorman swung a hot bat with 5 RBI's in the series and going 8 for 13 at the dish. Lars Nootbaar even found his swing in the series hitting safely in all 3 games and drawing 3 walks.

The Cardinals only loss in the series was Sunday with Dakota Hudson making his first start of the season after taking over the vacant roster spot left by Steven Matz. Hudson would leave in the 4th inning with an oblique injury.

The Cardinals will return back to St.Louis for a brief 2 game series with the Royals to close out the month of May.

Mariners (6-7) take two of 3 from Colorado (5-8) to get back to .500

Mariners opened up an important 9 game home stand early on this season as they try to get in a groove

The first game of the series was a pretty good pitching duel as both Marco Gonzales and Kyle Freeland had good stuff. They both would surrender two runs each in the 3rd inning and then would shut the other teams down through 7. The pens would take over in the 8th and Teoscar Hernandez hit a huge two run rbi double followed by a RBI single from Ty France and the Mariners would win the opener 5-2. Paul Sewald would get the save

Game two was one I hope to forget fast. George Kirby who has been horrible so far this season continued that trend. He would give up 6 runs on 8 hits in the first inning before recording an out. The manager would leave him in to take one for the team and he would give up two more in the 4th. The pen would come in and give up 5 more over the remaining 5 innings. The only bright spot was Teoscar Hernandez is heating up as he hit a HR and an RBI Double and that was about it as the Rockies blasted the Mariners 13-4 to even the series. I swear it seems Goerge Kirby is testing me to see how long before I will send him down to right himself

The final game saw the red hot Luis Castillo who has been on a roll take the mound and he did not disappoint. He would go 7 strong of 1 run ball on 5 hits with 9 strikouts. On offense yes one more time Teoscar Hernandez hit another home run his second in as many days and had 3 RBI and the Mariners take the final game 4-1 to get to .500 on the year.

Teoscar Hernandez had a monster series. He went 7 for 11, 2 HR, 3 Doubles, 8 RBI after being ice cold up until this series.

On the other side Julio Rodriguez who was red hot the first 9 games is ice cold the last 6. He is in a 2-18 slump with no homer runs and 1 rbi over that time span.

The Mariners now (8-8) see if they can get over .500 as they welcome in the Brewers (5-11) for three games

Not a large sample size, but after four games All-Star feels a bit too easy. Since I'm not that deep into it, I think I'm going to start over on default HOF.

Edit: And, of course, I get my biggest blowout win going up to HOF. Felt like I earned it though. Matt Olson had a homer and three RBIs and Spencer Strider struck out 10 over six shutout innings as the Braves beat the Nationals 9-2 on Opening Day.

2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: Joe Ross (6-2, 2.76) vs Cade Cavalli (5-8, 3.91)
Yadiel Hernandez was a late scratch with elbow inflammation during BP.

Philly scored two runs in the second; once on a Matt Vierling sac fly and the other on an Amed Rosario single. The Nationals tied the game in the fourth with consecutive singles from Luis Garcia, Ildemaro Vargas, Joey Meneses, and Lane Thomas (whose base hit scored both runs). Philadelphia would respond in the fifth with a base hit from Adam Engel, a walk by Bryce Harper and a single from Rhys Hoskins. Cade Cavalli battled all game trying to find the strike zone but was wildly inconsistent, but would get out of the fifth when Bruce Harper was thrown out trying to score on a single by Edmundo Sosa. The Phillies would break it open in the sixth; Sean Doolittle did his part, but Luis Garcia had a ball go right through him with two outs and the Phillies would take full advantage when Bryce Harper hit a three run double. Washington would get a run back when Kike Hernandez singled to score Joey Meneses, but the speed on Philadelphia’s outfield prevented any further damage as Brandon Marsh ran down what could have been a double by Keibert Ruiz. It was the second inning Marsh would run down a ball that may have been a hit with a slower outfielder. There were several instances in the game where both he and Matt Vierling got to a ball quickly enough to limit Washington batters to singles instead of doubles, and that may have been a key factor in this one. The Nationals would get the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Seranthony Dominguez would get Luis Garcia to hit an infield fly and Ildemaro Vargas struck out to end the ballgame.

Game Two: Martin Perez (5-4, 3.68) vs Stephen Strasburg (7-6, 2.01)
Matt Vierling always seems to play his best against Washington, and this game was no exception. He hit what should have been a double down the line in the second that just did stay on the right side of the foul line, and Victor Robles missed the diving stop attempt to allow Vierling to round the bases and score via the Little League home run to put the Phils up 1-0. The Nationals tied the game in the bottom half; Gleyber Torres was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Anderson Tejeda followed with a single before Luis Garcia flied out to allow Torres to tag and go to third. Wilmer Perez singled down the line to score Torres before CJ Abrams popped out and Victor Robles grounded out to end the threat. The Nationals would take the lead with two down in the eighth when Anderson Tejeda hit a base hit to score Joey Meneses from second. Colin Poche would get a save opportunity as he was ready and waiting in the ‘pen and the Nationals did not want Bryce Harper to face a righty in the top of the ninth. Poche would make the most of his opportunity, forcing Amed Rosario to pop out to second and then striking out Brandon Marsh and Bryce Harper to give the Nationals a hard-fought victory. Stephen Strasburg went 8 innings, giving up a run on three hits, walking one and striking out seven.

Game Three: Ranger Suarez (4-8, 3.15) vs MacKenzie Gore (7-7, 3.62)
Neither offense was stellar in this one, and both pitchers really were able to induce soft contact. The first scoring opportunity happened in the fourth when Kike Hernandez hit a ball deep to left center but CF Dalton Guthrie made a fantastic leaping grab to rob him of a home run. Philadelphia would finally break the scoring drought in the sixth; Alec Bohm hit a leadoff double and Rhys Hoskins singled down the left field line to score him. MacKenzie Gore would get out of the inning and would end his day giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks and only 1 strikeout in 6 innings of work. Jackson Rutledge would come in and retire one batter before leaving with a shoulder injury. The trainer was able to pop the shoulder back in, but it looks like Rutledge’s short time at the Major League level will be over for a while*. The Nationals would finally get their offense going in the bottom of the eighth. Lane Thomas started the inning with a leadoff single, which chased Ranger Suarez from the game despite him only having thrown about 70 pitches and the Nationals only getting three hits off of him. Daniel Hudson would come on in relief and would give up an RBI double to Anderson Tejeda on the very first pitch. Tejeda has become a fan favorite this season, as he provided a spark the first time he was called up earlier in the year and is doing so yet again. Hudson would get Victor Robles to fly out before giving up a single to Wilmer Perez. Philly would then bring in Kyle Gibson, who hit Keibert Ruiz to load the bases with only one out. Brandon Nimmo would hit a chopper back to the pitcher, who threw home and then the relay to first was in time to kill the rally. Kyle Gibson would keep the Nationals at bay until the 11th, as with two outs and Luis Garcia the ghost runner on second, Brandon Nimmo hit a bloop single between third and left that allowed Garcia to score and give the Nationals a wild walk-off win.

*Jackson Rutledge’s shoulder separation is severe enough that it will keep him from throwing for 1-2 months. The Nationals have placed him on the 15-day IL but we will have to wait and see if he requires further downtime. The club has decided to call up 1B Drew Mendoza, a 25 year old corner infielder who was drafted in 2019 and will be making his MLB debut. The Nationals need another position player for the last few series before the All-Star Break and Mendoza has been playing well at AAA (.286/.527/.878 for average/slg/ops, 15 home runs and 54 RBI in 70 games).

The Nationals (44-48) are hanging in there, despite a tired team that has been struggling offensively. They will play Miami (46-45) in a three game series at home before traveling to Philly for a four game series to end the unofficial first half of 2023.
