Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Big offseason moves for Toronto. Trade wise, George Springer, Bo Bichette and JD Martinez were moved to San Diego for Ha-seong Kim. The second major trade saw the Jays move Jose Berrios, Jordan Romano and minor leaguer Josh Kasevich to the Chicago Cubs for Felix Bautista, who was originally dealt to the Cubs by Baltimore. For free agents, the Jays picked up Pete Alonso, Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes on five year deals. Kim and Bautista both signed long term five year extensions with Toronto following their first spring training game of 2025, a 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers. Cavan Biggio belted two solo homers in both of his at bats in the game, and last year's first round pick David Shearer hit a solo homer to start off his bid to make the team. Other notable departures in the offseason included Justin Turner, Kevin Kiermaier and Joey Votto.

      Cardinals Take Series from Rockies

The Cardinals (31-35) took 3 games of a 4 game series against the Rockies in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals are now within 6 games of the Brewers in the Central and 5 games of the wildcard.

The Cardinals offense carried them this series as the Cards hit a whopping 12 homeruns in the 4 game series and Nolan Arenado continues to be on fire earning 10 hits with 4 homeruns and 4 doubles in the series. He also drove in 11 runs over the 4 games.

The lone disappointment was again the bullpen blowing Friday nights game after taking a 4 run lead into the final two innings. The Cardinals will need to address pitching if they are serious about making a run to and in October.

The Cardinals remain at home as they welcome the Pirates to Busch Stadium for a 3 game series.

        Cardinals Win Series with Pirates

The Cardinals (33-36) won another series this time taking 2 games from the Pirates in their 3 game series. The Cardinals had a chance at the sweep, but Giovanny Gallegos blew up in the 8th, as the Cardinals squandered a 5 run lead in the final 6 outs.

The Cardinals find themselves now just 5 games behind the Brewers and Cubs who sit atop the NL Central.

The Cardinals will travel to Wrigley for a 3 game series with the Cubs this weekend.

          Braves Split Series With Marlins

          August 1-4, 2024

The Atlanta Braves stayed at home and played the fourth place Miami Marlins, who after a really rough May and June have been playing closer to .500 ball the past few weeks.

The opening game saw an extra inning game, where the Marlins came out on top after a Josh Bell homer in the top of the tenth. It was one of two homers in the game for Bell as the Marlins hit four in total in a game where Bryce Elder did not have his best stuff, giving up six runs in 4.1 innings. The bullpen was excellent however, as only the Bell homer against Aaron Bummer in the 10th produced any runs against them. As for the Braves offense, they jumped on Braxton Garrett for six runs themselves, powered by Marcell Ozuna and Sean Murphy homers, while Travis d'Arnaud got the start at first base and picked up three hits. It wasn't enough, as the Braves fell 8-6.

The second game was a domination from the Braves, who scored 20 runs with four coming off of Eury Perez before scoring at least one run against every guy that came out of the bullpen. While the Braves got plenty of offense from everybody, including homers from Michael Harris, Austin Riley, and Ozuna, the guy to point out was Murphy. Murphy got four hits, including a no-doubt homer himself. Spencer Strider was only OK, giving up four runs in five innings while striking out five, but it was fine on a day the offense was this good.

The third game was another victory for Atlanta, as they touched up Sandy Alcantara for six runs in just under five innings of work. Ronald Acuna, Orlando Arcia, and Jordan Luplow all went deep, while Murphy produced an RBI single while walking three times. Max Fried was having a great start but gave up two homers for three runs from Jake Burger and Jesus Sanchez in his seventh and final inning, giving up four total in the game. Tyler Matzek and Raisel Iglesias closed out the game in a 7-4 win.

The Marlins bounced back in a pitchers duel between Chris Sale and Jesus Luzardo, with the Marlins eventually winning with a run off of Bummer in the ninth inning thanks to a Avisail Garcia single after a Bryan De La Cruz double. Garcia accounted for all three runs in the game, as despite Sale's effort and another Acuna homer, the Braves lose 3-2.

Playing three games in the series, Murphy heard the criticism coming into August and had a great weekend. Murphy went 6-10 with two homers and three walks, his best series of the season. Acuna also stole four bases in the series, putting his attempt at a second 40-40 season at 28 homers and 41 stolen bases with 49 games left.

The Braves now stand at 80-33 and will be staying at home with another three-game set against the now 49-63 Milwaukee Brewers.

Braves Agree to Extension With Another Young Player

Jarred Kelenic was a top prospect before his debut with the Seattle Mariners, but never really put it together for them before being acquired in a trade this past off season by the Braves. Kelenic has awarded the Braves for their belief in him, being as consistent as any player on the team. Kelenic has not seen his OPS drop below .800 in any month while it currently stands at .840 on the season with a .285/.335/.506 slash with 14 homers and six stolen bases. The Braves, who were working with four more years of team control on Kelenic, signed the 24-year-old to a six-year, 36-million-dollar extension. This contract will give the Braves an additional two years of Kelenic, who will be in Atlanta through his age-30 season. Atlanta now has their starting outfield signed through 2028, when Acuna's current deal is set to expire. In the three games since the deal, Kelenic has five hits in 12 at-bats.

At this time, it does not appear that the Braves and Fried are discussing an extension. At 30, this is likely to be Fried's biggest chance at a monster contract. The two sides will be in contact this offseason at the very least.

            June Notes:
The Orioles had an up an down month in June this season, finishing 15-14 on the month and falling from first in the division to second and trailing the Rays by 1.5 games. To be fair the schedule was brutal for the month. Every team they faced is a playoff caliber team (TB, TOR, ATL, PHI, NYY, HOU, CLE, TEX). At one point in mid June the O's had lost 6 games in a row, and from June 2nd until June 15 they had lost of 14 games. They did seemingly right at the end of the month going 6-2 and taking 3 of 4 games from the defending champion Texas Rangers. July gets markedly easier mixed in the with the All Star Break the difficulty of schedule drops significantly.

            Monthly Awards:
AL Pitcher of the Month: Kevin Gausman, TOR (4-0, 1.95 ERA)
AL Player of the Month: Vinnie Pasquantino, KC (.379, 9 HR, 26 RBI)
AL Rookie of the Month: Brayan Rocchio, CLE (.325, 3 HR, 15 RBI)

NL Pitcher of the Month: Shoehei Ohtani, LA (4-1, 2.22 ERA, 52 K)

The Toronto Blue Jays and LA Angels completed a deal prior to Toronto's spring training game against the Phillies. The Jays send Bowden Francis and Michael Lorenzen to the Angels for Mickey Moniak. Alan Roden will now join the team for the next spring game, which is against the New York Yankees. Assuming no more trades happen, and no injuries occur, here's how Opening Day likely projects for Toronto:

Braves Fall In Series Loss to the Brewers

                        August 6-9, 2024

In an unexpected result, the Braves fell at home in two out of three games to a Milwaukee team that is close to the basement of the NL. The opener went the Braves way, simply because of an eight-run sixth inning that included a two-run homer from Matt Olson and a grandslam from Austin Riley. Charlie Morton gave up three runs in the first inning but appeared to settle in before having to leave the game with a minor injury in the third inning. The bullpen was exceptional and didn't allow another run as Atlanta won 9-3.

The Braves lost a tough one in the second game, as homers from Michael Harris and Ronald Acuna and a good outing from Bryce Elder (6 IP, 2 ER) saw them up 3-2 in the top of the ninth. Raisel Iglesias would blow the save and a Willy Adames two-run homer in the top of the 10th would lead to a 5-2 Brewers win. The Braves' offense was bad in this one only racking up six hits and losing despite four errors from Milwaukee. They just didn't have much an answer for Aaron Ashby, who went six innings and only allowed two runs.

Spencer Strider took the mound for Atlanta in third game and had one of the weirder starts of the year. After a rougher outing for him in the last start, Strider only went 3.2 innings in this one, despite striking out nine of 11 total outs, because he also walked two and gave up six hits for five runs. The Brewers didn't really hit him hard, with only one double among those hits, but it was just enough. The bullpen was excellent after, not allowing a run, but the offense couldn't score. Despite nine hits, an Ozzie Albies homers and an Orlando Arcia single to score Jarred Kelenic would be their only runs in a 5-2 loss for Atlanta.

Atlanta now stands with a still phenomenal 81-35 record. Up, they head to play the Colorado Rockies (38-78). Against such a bad team, the Braves will be looking to get things right quick.

Dodgers Take 2 of 3 In Chicago

Game 1: 4-2 loss Dodgers relievers blank Cubs in final 4 innings
Game 2: 3-2 loss Dodgers bats erupt against Jordan Wicks
Game 3: 4-3 win Suzuki stops the sweep with 3 run HR

The MLB got its 1st Yamamoto vs Imanaga and well, it wasn't spectacular. Yamamoto started strong with a 9 pitch 1st inning. Meanwhile Shota Imanaga got in a jam with a Max Muncy 2 out double but Kike Hernandez grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the 3rd Chris Taylor worked a 8 pitch walk and Diego Cartaya moved him to 2nd on a out to left field. Mookie Betts proceeded to get a walk of his own before Iminaga settled down and struck out Outman and Freeman grounded out to 1st.
Both pitchers were finding it difficult as the strike zone was extremely inconsistent by umpire James Kingsley, so a rhythm was gard to find for both sides arms and bats.
In the top of the 4th Ohtani hit a single and Teoscar Hernandez moved him over with help by Christopher Morel who overthrew 2nd base and in result missed out on the double play opportunity. Ohtani made it to 3rd on the overthrow and Muncy put it in play for an RBI single before Kike Hernandez ended the inning with a pop out to 1st.
The game was quiet until the 6th when Seiya Suzuki crushed a 3 run homerun (3) to left off Yamamoto who went 5 innings, giving up 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and a walk. Imanaga didn't fair much better as he was on the line for the loss prior to Suzuki's homerun. He only went 4.2 innings with 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
The brightside of this series is Chicago might have found its bullpen rotation for the season as the combo of Keegan Thompson, Hector Neris and Alzolay to close lookes strong.
Ohtani tried to make it interesting as he was the only one to get a hit off those 3. He got a homerun (4) to open the 9th and make it a 1 run game but Alzolay settled down and closed it out.
Chicago (6-3) will head to Sunny San Diego to open a series tomorrow with The Friars (6-5)and Dylan Cease.

Cardinals Take Series from Cubs as they continue to get back into race

The Cardinals (35-37) took 2 games of a 3 game series against the Cubs in Wrigley over the weekend and find themselves back in the hunt as they are within 5 games of the Brewers. The Cardinals are now 3 games out of the 3rd wildcard spot.

The Cardinals lost Friday's series opener as again, Lance Lynn was horrendous. Lynn lasted just one inning before being lifted. He only allowed 4 runs, but thats simply because he was pulled and the bullpen got out of jam in the 2nd inning. The Cubs would go on to win 7-2.

On Saturday, it was a different story. Dylan Carlson opened the scoring with a 2 run bomb in the Top of the 1st and Sonny Gray pitched 7 dominant innings in route to a 4-2 win. The Cubs scored their only two runs on a throwing error by Arenado and a wild pitch, both with 2 outs in the 8th.

Sunday was Kyle Gibson's day going 8 innings allowing no runs on a single hit. He was pulled after 123 pitches. Ryan Helsley got 3 outs on 4 pitches for the save as the Cardinals held on 2-0.

The Cardinals will now travel to Miami for a 3 game series with the Marlins starting on Monday.

Cardinals and Tigers make interesting trade

The Cardinals and Tigers have struck an unusual deal as they swapped struggling starting pitchers. The Cardinals sent Lance Lynn 2-8 with a 4.74 ERA and a WHIP of 1.80, but hasn't pitched past the 4th inning in his last 2 starts, to the Tigers in exchange for former Cardinal RHP Jack Flaherty who was moved to the bullpen with his near 7 ERA and a WHIP of just over 2. Fjaherty is 4-6 on the year.

Both teams are hopeful that a change of scenery will benefit their newly acquired arm. Both pitchers are free agents at season's end.

Yankees and Diamondbacks agree to deal

The Yankees and Diamondbacks made a deal that will send OF Alex Verdugo to the Diamondbacks in exchange for IF Jace Peterson.

The D'Backs lost Lourdes Guirrell for the season just a week ago and were looking to fill the void in left field. The Yankees have been relying on Gleyber Torres at 2nd base, but he has struggled much of the season. For now Peterson is manning first base as Anthony Rizzo recovers from a shoulder injury, but its expected that Peterson will be the everyday 2nd baseman once Rizzo returns to the lineup.
