        August 20-21, 2024: SURPRISE (69-59) @ FLAGSTAFF (61-68)
        Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

        August 20: Hops 12, Saguaros 9
        August 21: Saguaros 7, Hops 6 (11)

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Hops finsihed off the homestand by splitting a two game series with Surprise with two very entertaining games.

The Hops won their fourth straight game on Tuesday evening, hitting six home runs in a 12-9 slugfest over Surprise. David Petrovski homered twice and drove in three runs to lead the way for the Hops.

Flagstaff grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a Thomas Sanders home run, his seventh on the season. Surprise would answer right back in the second with a two-run home run from Joe Gallagher (19) and a solo home run from Steve Mihelich (22) to put the visitors up 3-1.

A Robbie Westbrook two-run double in the bottom half tied the game at 3-3.

A Jaime Hernandez RBI double in the fifth gave Surprise a 4-3 lead. But the Hops answered back with a four run frame to take the lead for good. David Petrovski blasted a two-run home run and Grant Mitchell, just off the Injured List, hit a two-run home run.

A Dan Turner RBI double in the top of the seventh cut the Hops lead to 7-5, but they put up another four spot in the bottom half to extend the lead to 11-5. David Petrovski hit his second home run (14) of the game, and Forrest Owen blasted a three-run shot, his 18th.

Surprise would not go away though, as they touched up reliever Kenneth Valdez for three in the top of the eight to move to within 11-8. Ken Hollinger hit a solo home run (21). Steve Mihelich lined an RBI double and Dan Turner hit a sac fly.

A Ryan Kelly solo home run in the bottom of the eighth gave the Hops some breathing room heading into the ninth. Oliver Benedict came on and did give up a run, but was able to get the final three outs to secure the win.

Juro Yamaguchi (6-11) picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking one. The bullpen struggled as Samuel Espinoza, Kenneth Valdez and Oliver Benedict all gave up at least one run.

Dan Reyna (5-7) took the loss for Surprise. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. The loss was Surpise's fourth straight.

David Petrovski had to leave the game in the eighth as he injured his shoulder diving for a foul ball. He was placed on the 10-day Injured List after the game. Richie Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his spot on the roster.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Hops blew a ninth inning lead, rallied, then lost in extra innings 7-6 to the Saguaros. Donnie McCloud went 5 for 5 with a double, home run and two RBIs, including the game winning home run in the 11th inning to help Surprise secure a split of the short two game series.

Surprise would grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Dan Turner two-out RBI single. A Ryan Kelly two-out RBI single in the third would tie the game up at 1-1.

Solo home runs from Steve Mihelich (23) and Donnie Roland in the fifth tied the game at 2-2. A Donnie McCloud RBI double with two-outs in the sixth put Surprise ahead 3-2. McCloud's double came against reliever Sam Varela, brought on with two outs in the sixth in relief of starter Russell Fluty.

Ryan Kelly would give Flagstaff their first lead of the game in the seventh as he hit a two-out, two-run home run (18) to left after Thomas Sanders drew a two-out walk and Flagstaff led 4-3.

In the ninth, the Hops brought on closer Vic Miller and things did not go well. Miller gave up a single to Donnie McCloud and an RBI double to Dan Gallagher to tie the game at 4-4. Eduardo Ramos then grounded to second and Robbie Westbrook threw it wildly, allowing Gallagher to score fronm second and Ramos also came around on another throwing error to make it 6-4. An absolute disaster for the Hops. Miller was charged with his seventh blown save.

But in the bottom half, Donnie Roland came through again. This time he blasted a two-run home run off of closer Maury Keith to tie the game at 6-6. It was his second of the game and fifth on the season. For Keith, it was his fifth blown save.

In the 11th, Donnie McCloud homered off of Aldo Osuna (4-5) to lead off the inning and put Surprise in front 7-6. Flagstaff could not find another rally, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom half to end their winning streak at four games.

Donnie Roland went 3 for 5 with a double, two home runs and three RBIs, scoring three runs, as he slides into the role at first base for David Petrovksi as he went on the Injured List.

Flagstaff (61-68) will now head out on a nine game road trip to Glendale (60-69), Colorado Springs (55-73) and Prescott (57-71).

Around the League: Long Beach's Herb Smith went 4 for 5 with a double, two home runs (25,26), two RBIs and three runs scored as the Surf Dawgs defeated Chandler 8-5. The Chiefs are (6-11) in August, but still lead the DL East by 12 games over Mesa and Salt River.

San Diego scored five times in the top of the ninth to rally for a 12-9 victory at Goodyear. San Diego's Felipe Rios went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a home run (16), driving in four and scoring three runs to lead the Seals, who sit atop the DL West.

San Antonio's Kosuke Matsui homered twice (34,35), driving in four, as the Javelinas pounded Fresno 16-4. The first-place Javelinas scored eight in the eighth to blow open a 7-4 game. Matsui is now tied with Jamaal McCormack atop the Mountain League with 35 home runs.

Chandler's Francisco Santiago improved to (16-3), pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking two, in a 5-3 victory for the Chiefs over Long Beach. Dewayne Ross keyed the offense with a three run home run (17) in the fourth as Chandler overcame an early three-run deficit to earn the win.

The Hops were denied a sweep by this Donnie McCloud extra inning home run on Wednesday afternoon.

          2024 Oakland Athletics 07/02-07/04

Overall Record:42-47 (5th AL West/13.0 behind Texas Rangers)

          Game Results

          Game 1
          Athletics-7
          Angels-6

          Game 2
          Athletics-3
          Angels-2

          Game 3
          Athletics-6
          Angels-4

          Athletics sweep Angels (again)

The Oakland Athletics are slowly moving toward getting themselves out of last place in the division and a .500 record. Overall, Oakland is 9-1 in their last ten and have swept the Angels twice in just over a week.

Oakland was clutch in their most recent series as they won two of three games in extra innings. Also, in game two, Oakland withstood a mid game push by the Angels to secure the victory. For reference, Oakland won game one in the 10th inning on a Lawrence Butler rbi sac fly and won game three in the same inning with a walkoff two run HR from Matt Chapman (11).

They will look to keep the momentum going as they welcome Baltimore (43-45) to Oakland (4th AL East/10.5 behind Rays)

The Reapers finally finished a season not in last place lol. The team finished with a 81-81 record in third place behind the Guardians. They were also two games out of the Wild Card. The Braves won the World Series defeating the Orioles. This year was filled with it’s ups and downs but a lot more positives than negatives. Decided to move Luis Robert Jr at the deadline because I knew I wasn't going to resign him and the guy coming back Robert Fagan was a generational talent. Robert also had been injured every year since I've started this franchise and the Rockies were in playoff contention and made the playoffs.

                Cardinals take series from Padres

The Cardinals (72-62) took 3 games of a 4 game series with the Padres in St.Louis to start the week. The Cardinals are now 2 games up on the Brewers in the NL Central.

Pitching is what did it for the Cardinals. Sonny Gray was dominant in the series opener Monday night, tossing 8 innings of 4 hit baseball giving up a solo run and striking out 10. Ryan Helsley would earn his 28th save of the season by shutting down the Padres in the 9th for a 4-1 win. Offensively the Cardinals were led by Tommy Edman who had 3 hits, 2 steals, and 3 RBIs

Cooper Hjerpe started Tuesday but got a no decision when Jo Jo Romero blew up yet again in the 8th, costing the Cardinals the lead and the game. The Cards led 5-2 before Romero gave up 5 runs on 2 hits and a walk. The Cards tried to come back having runners in scoring position in the 8th and 9th but couldn't push across a run.

Miles Mikolas pitched a complete game on Wednesday giving up a run in the 9th on just 5 hits. Thankfully the run didn't make things interesting as the Cards won the game 8-1 thanks to a Nolan Gorman grand slam. Lars Nootbaar put a 3 run homerun of his own.

Matthew Liberatore who had been knocked around lately started Thursday and tossed 6 innings giving up 3 runs (all in the 1st) on 8 hits and struck out 5. The bullpen combination of Kittridge, Hicks, and Helsley kept the 6-3 lead in place as the Cards won the series finale to claim the series.

The Cardinals will travel to the Bronx for a 3 game weekend series with the Yankees to close out August and begin the regular season's final month.

The Braves just completed the 6-game road trip, going 3-3. Record at 12-7, staying 1.5 games up in 1st in the NL East. We had an opportunity to sweep the Astros. But game 3 was a doozie! We were up 5-3 going into the 9th. The Astros had started Caratini at C today and his AS is 60. Acuna Jr led off the inning with a walk, so I had thieving on my mind. I successfully stole 2nd and 3rd. Albies hit shallow flyout to RF Tucker, who's AS is 69. Gunned down Acuna at the plate trying to extend the lead. I brought in my closer Iglesias, he walked one, gave up a hit and 2B Altuve hit the walk-off 3R HR. They won 6-5!

We are back to Atlanta for a 9 game homestand, featuring 3 vs the champs (Rangers),3 vs. Marlins and 3vs. CLE.

Cardinals take series from Yankees in the Bronx

The Cardinals (74-63) took the final two games of their three game series with the Yankees in the Bronx over the weekend. The Cardinals are now 2 games up on the Brewers as the we enter the final month of the season.

The Cardinals lost the first game of the series as Jack Flaherty got no help from the bullpen. Flaherty left after 5 innings with a 4-3 lead. By the time the bullpen recorded an out in the 6th, the Cardinals trailed 7-4. The game would conclude with that final score.

Sonny Gray got the ball on Saturday and was brilliant. Gray toss 8 innings giving up no runs on 4 hits and fanning 11. The Cardinals led 5-0, but Gray was at 112 pitches and Marmol decided to turn to the bullpen who struggled the night before to close it out. They did without issue as Zach Thompson pitched a 3 up 3 down 9th inning.

Dakota Hudson got the ball Sunday as he was recalled from Cooper Hjerpe who was put on the IL due to a shoulder issue. Hudson, whom the Cardinals claimed off waivers from the Rockies earlier this year, had been in Memphis since rejoining the Cardinals back in June. Hudson went 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, but would get the win thanks to the offense exploding for 11 runs including two grand slams, one by Contreras and one by Dylan Carlson.

The Cardinals will now head to Milwaukee for a pivotal 3 game series with the Brewers as the teams meet for the final time in 2024.

Cardinals recall Jordan Walker and Alex Reyes for September Expansion

The Cardinals have recalled RHP Alex Reyes and 3B/OF Jordan Walker from Memphis. Reyes was demoted earlier this year due to ineffectiveness, but has pitched well down in Memphis. Jordan Walker was sent down to get regular at-bats. Both will be counted on as the Cardinals continue to battle for a spot in the playoffs.

Cardinals take series from Brewers to extend divisional lead

The Cardinals (76-64) took 2 games of the 3 game series with the Brewers and now lead the Brewers and Reds by 3 games. The Cubs are 4 games out. The Brewers, Cubs, and Reds are all tied for the 3rd wildcard spot.

The Brewers absolutely destroyed the Cardinals on Monday as they beat up on Miles Mikolas and the bullpen in route to a 15-4 victory. But the Cardinals would bounce back Tuesday with a dramatic win in the 9th. Down 1-0, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Willson Contreras went back to back to back with 2 outs to give the Cards a 3-1 lead and eventual victory. Wednesday saw Jack Flaherty strike out 13 in route to a complete game shutout as the Cards won 5-0.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they head home to welcome the Mariners to town for a 3 game weekend series.

                          Remaining Schedule:

Having an absolute blast in my Cubs ‘chise! 5 straight games all decided in the final inning including the last 4 all being walk-offs. I haven’t won them all, but it’s been an unbelievable stretch of intense baseball! The Pirates have been in first place in the Central for most of the year and we are now 5-0 against them.

Anyone have a breakdown of training in Franchise this year. I see that there's really no point in training. I know they get a boost every month. Trying to see if there in game play helps or something other than just put it on whatever.
