Also my point is that every other owner in baseball can do this. People get mad at the Dodgers, but the real reason is MLB owners are cheap and refuse to spend because they’d rather collect the luxury tax money from the big spenders and pocket it instead of reinvesting in their team.

People should be mad at John Fisher for refusing to spend money for the A’s until they left Oakland just because he wanted to hold the city and their fans hostage. What Bob Nutting and crew have done with the Pirates should be criminal since they refuse to spend any money. The cheap owners are a much larger problem than the Dodgers or Mets.
Absolutely. A floor is needed more than a cap.

The Dodgers are now at 375 million with the lux tax. Mets have not even hit 300 yet

Soto is going to regret coming to the Mets. Sterns can not build a Dodger style team with signings of Montas , Holmes (As a starter), Megill, Canning. Using Winker and Nimmo as Soto protection. I mean we just can not get a break. We finally have a rich owner and he hired a GM who thinks he works for the Coupons
I don’t understand the Mets fans that think like this. Stearns is doing what Cohen wants, spending on the sure fire targets but being smart about not giving long term deals to guys that have question marks. Also those short term deals can be used to fill the farm system.

Also what FAs should Stearns have signed? They went after Ohtani, Yamamoto, and now Scott and they chose the Dodgers even though he Mets offered equal money, nothing they can do about that. This is year 2 of the actual build of the Mets. It took the Dodgers 8 years to build their team after new ownership before they finally won a World Series and they stopped spending tons of money during that time. It wasn’t until they actually built the team through the farm system after a few years that they started spending money and trading for top players (like the Scherzer/Turner trade).

Speaking of Scherzer, the Mets spent a ton on him and Verlander and how did that turn out? It’s not just about spending money, it’s spending in the right areas and continuing to build out the depth of the team. The 2000s Yankees spent all that money and only won 1 World Series in 2009. Just trust that Stearns knows what he’s doing until he’s proven otherwise.

Mets fans panicking for no reason is honestly embarrassing. Just relax!

Zero reason too hand out 3, 4, 5 year deals right now for who and what is signing. They have some home grown guys coming and have to leave room.

Something will give her soon with Alonso and another signing or two and lets go to battle..

I'm just impressed that a thread asking about a "Cohen Budget" has gone on a roller coaster ride from "We're signing everyone!" to "WTH??????".

I do wish the Blue Jays would finally get some FAs instead of being Boras’ “sleeper team”. It’s like he uses them exclusively to raise the price of his players.

I do not feel embarrassed at all, I work in Sports Media, so I am involved in a lot of conversations that take place specifically in the New York sports media world. I talk to fans all the time. For every one fan who says "Trust Sterns and the process" there is one who says "Sterns is trying to hope for miracles again"

Whether Sterns works out is yet to be seen. But right now on Paper you have maybe a good 8 year window , possibly 10 while Soto is in his prime. A good chunk of those years is going to be spent going up against a juggernaut Dodgers team.

We will find out if he truly knows what he is doing. For the sake of being a fan I sure hope he does. But keep in mind any realistic fan knows that last year was a mix of getting very lucky as all the guys he took chances on. Winker, Iglesias, Severino, Manaea, and a few others played well above what they has been doing for some time. That and getting hot at the right time. He is playing that same game again. He is hoping that by having 8 to 9 starting pitchers hopefully 5 will work out. Having 3 young kids in Baty, Mauricio and Acuna to man the hot corner one will turn out to be a stud. Its a dangerous game to play and if it back fires it leads to a long season.

This process of him not liking to sign players of a certain age to long term deals to me is risky business. Same with him wanting to hold on to prospects, Most of them do not work out. There are pitchers out there who could be traded for as well such as Castillo, Cease. Help the top end of the rotation.

                So we will see.

That is modern day pitching though. The Dodgers used 17 different SPs last season with the main rotation towards the end of the season being Gavin Stone, Landon Knack, the ghost of Walker Buehler, and a totally off Bobby Miller. They had to wait for Yamamoto to come back and traded for Flaherty and they still had to fill in spots with bullpen games. Could the Mets use another pitcher? Absolutely, but having more arms is better than locking down 5 studs just because it’s almost a guarantee that pitchers today will always get hurt.

Stearns has done a great job with the bullpen and the depth minors signings for guys like Genesis Cabrera are great. The biggest issue is getting another set of bats in the lineup, either bringing back Alonso or signing someone at the higher level of the FA market. Will help bridge the gap for the young guys coming up and I’m not all that worried since so many players haven’t signed yet.

That is my main concern. The protection in the lineup for Soto. We need a big HR bat behind him. I get the allure or Vlad Jr but I do not believe he will be moved until the middle of the season. Even then I would suggest the Mets wait and try to get him with money. We need someone behind Soto. Most people I talk to believe Sterns is going to run with what he has currently in the lineup. I sure hope that is smoke and mirrors

On a side note I still hope they add another top tier RP. Would love Yates, Then as far as the bats go. I do have high hopes for Acuna and Mauricio. So let them fight it out. Not so high on Baty anymore. I also hope they find a buyer for Marte. It is a shame that deal with him to KC for Hunter Harvey fell through.

Agreed about Vlad Jr. Definitely want him on the team but no reason to make a move when you can get him for the price of a draft pick next offseason. I don’t see him signing an extension anywhere.

Santander was my #1 target this offseason, because I knew we weren't getting Soto and I realllllly think whatever contract Bregman ends up getting turns very "George Springer-esque", which is a shame, but adding some pop is a big win after a frustrating offseason.

It'd be hilarious to add Pete now...don't know how you run he, Vlad and Santander in the lineup, but gimme all of the taters!

I think a lot of people forget Vlad came up as a 3B. Not sure how they rate him at 3B in the show. I am still hoping we resign Alonso even if for a season.
