Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

anyone got any "basic" hitting tips for me?? I used to play mlb 08 the show rtts all day long, and i was really good on my ps2. but i'm at my cousin's house, and he's got it for the ps3, and now all of a sudden i suck again. i used to always guess low 4sfb, and only swing if i guessed both the pitch and the location correctly (unless i was about to strike out, of course). Now, everytime i do that, i end up chasing some pitch WAAAY out of the strike zone, because for some reason, when i decide to swing, i think it's close to the zone. Any tips, guys??

anyone have a player in their mid 30's or older? are your stats declining?

im getting the feeling that once people's player starts declining in attributes, they start a new one.

**ppl playing HOF or Legend will obviously experience this more realistically, right?

Cool - I kind of figured it was a military tribute of some sort, I had never seen them before though.

I didn't realize San Diego was a military town either - there's a large navy base there right?

You got that right about San Diego.

Hey bkrich, is Snider blocked by Adrian or do the Padres no longer have him in your RTTS?

I think I'll speed mine up a little bit. I may stop doing weekly updates so I can get more games in between and get my career on the fast track. After seeing so many people here already in or close to being in the big leagues, I'm still in my first season in July. Red Sox put me on the trading block so we'll see what's going to happen there. I have the highest AVG and OPS on my team and I'm creeping up in home runs (I think seven right now).

Snider plays LF and 1b. So he's blocked by Headley (who's tearing it up) and Adrian. Adrian is on the trade block however.

I keep reading about people saying that, in their franchise or RTTS, Boston is stacked. Add me to that list. I came in to face them in relief with one on (1st) and nobody out. Got Orlando Cabrera to ground out, sending the runner to second and gave up a single to Julio Lugo, sendning the runner to third. So Lugo steals 2n and now, there are runners on 2nd and 3rd one down. I am facing Ellsbury, who is tearing the cover off the ball. I wonder, should I put him on? So I look at the line. Next is Dustin Pedrioa, batting .360 something followe by Albert Pujols followed by Jason Bay followed by Joe Mauer. No choice but to face him. Struck him out. Then, I easily retired Pedroia. How? By busting him with a high and inside fastball!

I'm in year 4 of RTTS, 2013. Boston has almost the identical lineup that they have today. Except for no more Mike Lowell and someone else who I forget. But anyways their still stacked, they have won 2 straigh World Series. Both Sweeps.

                      Chaper 2...The Draft

The decision has been made. Although Chuck's parents don't seem to be keen on the idea, they understand that it's not a place of theirs to contradict otherwise. What maybe they don't understand is that this decision is one that's been made for some time. Although the reality of it all came into perspective about a month ago, the path had been chosen long before. Chuck has know what was necessary for him to succeed, he just didn't know if it was even going to come true. Of course, the draft isn't until tomorrow, but just to have the opportunity to even be a part of it is still amazing.

The scouts have been excited, but how does that really compare to the rest of the prospects out there. Chuck's name has never been mentioned in books or magazines. Heck the clubs didn't even start showing interest until just last year. Of course that was when he finally added a third pitch to his arsenal and added consistantcy to his pitching. He managed to grow 6 inches over the summer and put on a few more pounds of muscle that hs added some speed to his fastball as well. Finally he has gotten up to 91 mph while going off speed on his wicked slider and dropping 2-seamer. They're all great fastball pitches that have disrupted hitters up to this point. But that's only highschool. All Chuck kept thinking about before closing his eyes that night were all those countless innings he would love to pitch standing in front of 40,000 screaming fans in the most magical place there is in major league baseball - Wrigley Field.

The next morning he sat at home with his family waiting word from his agent. They've been talking non-stop the past few days discussing all the options that could be laid out for Chuck this very day. Various teams have shown some interest, but nothing very promising at this point. He only hoped that that would change today.

As time passed by, the phone stayed silent. Chuck thought multiple times to call in to his agent, but realized that that wouldn't do any good. He knew he would get immediate word the moment something came through and was thinking it was just a matter of time. His parents, especially his father were very supportive and tried to find ways to ease his mind off this very tensious time. Took him out and threw a few balls around like when he was a kid. Grandparetns and family alike all called to wish him luck and and to tell him to keep his head up. This all helped pass a few moments here and there, but really just added more stress than what there was before. Chuck began to feel an added pressure boiling inside that made him contemplate his decision. "Was this the right choice", he would ask himeslf.

Finally the phone rang and his agent had some news. Not exactly the kind he was guessing, but still good at that. Unfortunately today wasn't the greatest day for Chuck as no team took the risk of drafting him. His agent said that his lack of success and experience made him an unlikely canidate. If he would have gone on to college and shown more years of growth, more teams would have taken that risk. But that wasn't all the news his agent had for him. There was one team that was willing to let him try out like any other. He would really have to impress, but could find a way onto a club after all. But who, who would have even given him a glance.

                      "The Cubs", his agent said.

Chucks mind went racing. All his dreams and fantasies flashed before his eyes. The smell of the honey-dew grass and pine tar fulfilled his senses. All he could see now was that White W flag waiving in the crisp cool air indicating his soon to be victories for one of the most historic franchises in baseball history. Although Chuck's plan of getting drafted didn't come true, his wildest dreams just did. Beginning tomorrow his road to Chicago begins.

Just finished my rookie season with my starting pitcher on the Athletics. The team went 62-100 and we were in dead last in the division. I went 11-7 with a 3.83 ERA. Had about 90 strike outs on the year, and pitched about 190 some innings. Not the best numbers but i did manage to go from last in the rotation to first in the span of a single season. During spring training i hope to up my K/9 rating so i can get those strikeout numbers up. As for the organization it probably won't get any better than 62-100. Jason Giambi was our best offensive player and he retired so it could get worse. Hopefully I and the rest of the 2012 Oakland Athletics do good

Have a question, my pitches are kind of erratic, i was wondering if i improve my arm accuracy rating in training would that help or if i just need to improve my control for each pitch?

Chapter 3 …A Hit of Reality

The journeys never go as planned, but all that matters is getting where you need to the end. Chuck’s journey is definitely one of those. Although the decision was made to bypass college and go straight for the pros, draft day didn’t go exactly as planned. The good news though is that the dream is still alive and kicking with a spring tryout with the Chicago Cubs. A lifelong long fan and Cubbie blue enthusiasts, he is anxious to make an impact upon the organizations elites.

The past few months have been hard. Sleepless nights due to the over excitement along with vigorous training to get ready for the big day. Chucks ball speed and control had improved months prior to the draft, but the Cubs organization felt he needed to work hard on developing that 3rd pitch – 2 seam fastball. It lacked velocity and movement that just didn’t fool that many hitters. But it didn’t take long before the scouts were impressed. It began to compliment his already wicked slider and straight fastball. Although he didn’t have a true off-speed pitch, Chuck could just overwhelm the opposing batters and humiliate them while doing it.

The day had come sooner than expected and the bags were packed to make his way to Mesa Arizona. The journey had been a long one up until this point, but Chuck was destined to not make it end. After getting off the bus and stepping up to park, butterflies fluttered inside his stomach. Even the driver asked if he was feeling all right as Chuck’s face turned pale white. He reassured them that everything was fine and made his way to the clubhouse.

It wasn’t long before Chuck took the field and began warming up with all the other greats that he has watched over the years. He felt eyes cast upon him, but had many welcoming hands along the way. Ryan Dempster made a joke that seemed to have broke the ice while others such as Ted Lilly and Sean Marshall came over to wish him well. The mood was tense, but maybe because of the pressure that Chuck began to feel. Game time was only a few minutes away. All the past months have flashed before him trying to remember all that he’s learned. Larry Rothschild came up and gave him some words of encouragement and a few pointers before everyone headed back and took their seats in the bullpen.

                                <O
The game passed on and a number of players got their call to head out and take the mound. Innings where ticking away and there was no sign of Chuck getting an opportunity this game. He was well aware that it may take a few games and a few practices before he may ever set foot on that field, but the anticipation was nerve racking. He tried to stay calm and sit in his seat, but always felt the need to get up and walk around. Others were doing the same as well as there are many hot prospects itching their way onto that 40 – man roster.

Soon enough the game ended and the opportunity passed for Chuck to get the nod. Afraid that the coaches have been unimpressed with his abilities so far, he dreaded the walk back to the clubhouse anticipating the meeting with the manager saying that he didn’t make it. Fortunately that time hasn’t come yet, but the thought never escapes his mind. A hit of reality just set in that maybe this path of baseball stardom isn’t in his future. That maybe heading to college might have been the best thing to do. Tomorrow is another game, and hopefully a chance for him to prove himself not to just the coaches, but to his own inner self that is lacking the confidence to proceed forward.
