Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
So does power affect the accuracy of a throw at all? To me, if you take a little off your throw, that should allow you more wiggle room on the stick accuracy. When you throw at full effort, you better hit the accuracy right on the nose, otherwise it's going to be a wild throw.
Is that how it works?"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"Comment

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
I know it's been said before and I know it's redundant, but this game just feels like baseball. The nuances the atmosphere. It just oozes major league baseball. I have said this before in the past, and I'll say it again. This game is in my opinion the finest sports game ever made. I know others will refute it, but that's simply my opinion.
Loving the analog controls. I have the pitching down pretty well. But my timing is off on the hitting, may need to lower pitch speed just a touch, but I really, really enjoy the analog controls.
The camera work is again first rate, and I didn't realize how much adding the different broadcast cams for each stadium were going to add. Really a neat feature imo."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Loving the game.
Disagree with the choice to charge for additional stats, my only complaint.Comment

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
Physics of pitched balls in flight seem off. In MLB 09 & 10 a breaking ball thrown with maximum power would result in a pitch with slower speed but more movement. This year it's the opposite: more power = faster speed AND more movement.
To me this doesn't make sense. For example the average major league curveball speed is around 75 mph. If you add more velocity the result will be a flatter curve with less vertical drop but more horizontal movement. If you reduce velocity you'll get more drop with less horizontal movement.
The reason the average curveball speed is 75 mph is most likely because that is the speed at which a pitcher can place the maximum amount of spin while maintaining control. If you add velocity you're basically changing a curveball to a slurve. Throw it even faster and a slurve turns into a slider. Again more speed = less curve, more horizontal movement.
Last year the game had it right. Throw a 72 mph curve and it would have more vertical movement; while an 80 mph curve would kinda be a hanger. In my mind it doesn't feel right watching a slower curveball flatten out because I'm expecting it to drop down. MVP baseball also had it right. In that game you'd have a rated speed which was optimal. Let's say a pitcher had a 76 mph curve, if you missed your spot on the release the velocity would increase and you'd hang one.
Also, if you edit a pitchers ratings you'll see that you can set their fastball speed in the range of 80-99 mph. However, if you want to edit a changeup your choices are between 88-70 mph. Notice the higher you go the less speed you get. That's because the game understands a slower changeup is basically more effective than a fast one. But use a changeup in the game and the faster speed is most effective. The slower changeup will have less vertical drop which defies physics.
Another example: A forkball is basically a knuckleball thrown hard like a fastball (it's not supposed to have spin.) A 90 mph fork should have less break than an 85, but in this game it has more. There's no spin applied so how is this possible? You can argue the faster one is a better pitch to induce groundball outs because it will look more like a fastball and have a later break, but the slower pitch will drop more! This is why Phil Niekro threw a 30 mph knuckleball - because it danced like crazy.
Speaking of which, I went into practice with Dickey and his knuckleball just looks like a slow curveball. There is no "dance" or unpredictable movement. I was able to throw strikes every time with it by aiming in the center. In reality I think most knuckleball pitchers always aim center but have no clue where it's going to end up. Having the ball end up close to where I was aiming is also not right.
One more thing: why is the speed of pitches thrown high in the zone faster than balls thrown low in the zone?Comment

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
Just wanted to say I got my first win! Love how smooth everything is playing. Only seen one glitch that i saw in the demo a few times. Glitch is when i throw down to first with my catcher to try and pick off the runner who was way off the base, The base runner is caught off the base but instead of getting in a run down he just goes to second and the first baseman just tosses it back to the pitcher. Really annoys me.
But i got my first win 3-2 over the Cubs at Wrigley. I brought in Brian Wilson in the 8th and i struck out 4 in a row!Drew Stubbs is fastComment

Initially, when I first played the demo, I wasn't that impressed. Honestly, it felt like MLB 10 with analog controls to me. I popped in MLB 10, then immediately played the 11 demo, and I could appreciate the subtle improvements more after that. I bit the bullet and decided to get 11 earlier today when I was riding around.............
............THIS IS THE BEST DAMN SPORTS & BASEBALL GAME OF ALL TIME!!! I'm only a casual baseball guy. I can't even name you 15 major leaguers if you paid me, but I always get a baseball game each year because I think it's a fun sport to play (despite the fact that it isn't that exciting to watch to me). Like others have already stated, this game just oozes baseball. I had the pleasure of holding the flag on the field during the National Anthem at a Red's game last season, and this game brought me back to that same at the ballpark feeling I had that game. I held on to MLB 10 just in case I was still underwhelmed with 11 and figured I would sell 11 online somewhere if I wasn't impressed with the final build. MLB 10 is now the one that's going online; either that, or I'm going to just give the game to my cousin since he just recently bought a PS3.
I play with analog everything. I lost my very first game, but it was a very fun lost. The only part that frustrated me was the 4 errors I threw throughout the game (which cost me the lead I had). I lost 6 to 3 as the Reds vs the Nationals. I had 13 hits in the game, and I suck badly at hitting (both in real life and in 10). I spent a solid 30 minutes in practice mode first hitting, and that definitely paid off. Kudos to SCEA for having a comprehensive practice mode this year. I absolutely love the pitching as well. The fielding is also more realistic this year. This game is just very well polished, probably the most polished sports game I've ever played in my 20 years as a gamer. I definitely recommend this to anyone that is on the fence or is a diehard baseball guy. If a casual guy like me can love this game, I know a hardcore guy can truly appreciate what this game has to offer. I'm sorry NBA 2K11, but you've been dethroned!!!Last edited by Mos1ted; 03-08-2011, 07:42 PM.According to my old marketing professor, satisfaction is when product performance meets or exceeds consumer expectation.Comment

You aren't throwing errors because of how much power you are using, its because you are offline on the press to the base.
When you throw to second base (North) you want to press up to true north when you start to miss true north is when you will see yellow, and red throws.According to my old marketing professor, satisfaction is when product performance meets or exceeds consumer expectation.Comment

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
Completed two full games: Angels at Giants (HOF level.) Lost the first game 5-4 and gave up 16 hits. Jered Weaver's curveball was getting smoked and Aubrey Huff was a beast. I dont know if the game is programmed this way, but batters weren't swinging at balls when my curveball confidence was shot. When confidence got better they started whiffing. If so that's great because that's how real batters approach the game. They want to see where a pitcher is locating his breaking stuff, and if it stinks they just sit and wait to pound the fastball. I really felt like I had to work on the mound.
Second game I won 8-0 - pitched with Weaver again and he had a complete game shutout allowing 3 hits. In the past one of my major gripes is that too many games end up close so it's refreshing to see a blowout. In the 9th inning I brushed back Aubrey Huff with a slider and he looked angry. He then smashed one 410 feet in the deep part of right center and my OF barely got to it for the out. On the way back to the dugout Huff exchanged words with Weaver on the mound - that really woke me up and made things interesting.
- Got Posey to chase 7 pitches out of the strike zone. Nice! The pitcher/batter matchup is near perfect now. When I made mistakes I knew it and some got punished and others I got lucky.
- Got 3 "caught looking" strike outs to end innings. That's always fun because the umpire goes nuts.
- I want to be able to fast forward through half innings without the CPU making personnel changes!
- I think I'd like to see more check swings - only saw 3.
- Hit variety could improve, and the ball caroming too fast. On a double off the wall the ball bounced off it in a unrealistic speed.
- Messing with the cameras is great stuff. I always liked the view of a lefty on TV, the breaking balls always looked cooler for whatever reason. Now you can have the same camera angle for RHP's, just move it over to the left and behind his shoulder.
- I would love to pitch with the analog meter right in the middle of the catchers vest because you can see the pitchers windup really good that way. The problem is that it doesn't disappear fast enough. It would be nice if you had the option to make it go away as soon as the stick clicks the top of the meter.
Pretty smooth game - like what I see so far. If you liked 09 & 10 it's a must buy I'd say. Time for some MLB 2K11 action...Last edited by swaldo; 03-08-2011, 08:08 PM.Comment

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread
I don't know, I'm really torn this year. A couple questions for you guys. Do we finally have year by year career stats for each player on their cards? Also, can i transer a 1991 roster save from MLB 10 to this year's? And finally, is their any way to get a game update from somewhere else and transfer to my PS3 via a flash drive? Thanks you guys, and go O's!!!Comment

If Target called me and said: "Sorry Sir, we made a mistake. We charged you 60 dollars for your game but we were supposed to charge 100. You need to pay the difference", I would drive back to Target and gladly pay the difference.
Its not just the best baseball game. Its not just the best sports game...
Its the best video game I have ever played, ever.
