Re: MLB 12 The Show Pitch Repertoires Corrections Thread

Saw that they implemented some of our suggestions into the latest roster update. I only really looked at the Phillies but the repertoires look as they should be, at least how I suggested them.

The velocities are still a little off (Halladay's sinker and Cliff Lee's 2seam fastball to be specific... both should have average velocities around 91mph).

Just would like to thank SCEA for taking the time to make these changes.

      Pitcher Name:
      Roy Halladay
      Add/Remove
Sinker velocity should be slightly higher than his cutter velocity

        Pitcher Name:
        Vance Worley
        Pitches to Add/Remove
        Remove: Change Up
        Add: Circle Change Up

The grip he is going to use for the duration of the season is the circle change up grip he used last year.

Average Velocity as indicated by previous posts: 83-85 mph.

Also, while I noted that I believed the repertoirs looked good, I did see something a little off about Worley. According to fan graphs and the untrained eye, his repertoire should look like:

        X: 4 Seam Fastball
        O: Cutter
        Triangle: 2 Seam Fastball
        Square: Circle Change Up
        R1: Curve Ball

As per his catcher Mike Napoil, Yu throws a fastball, sinker, curve, slider, changeup, cut fastball and split-fingered fastball. I know the Show only allows five pitches, so pick and choose.

I would say after watching his starts he throws a 4 seam 90-92, Cutter 90-92, 12-6 curve 75-80, sinker 85-89 and slider 86 (his best pitch or strike out pitch with nasty movement.)

April 9th first start: 2 seam fastball 90-92, Sinker/screwball 90-92, 4 seam FB 94-95, slider 84-86, 12-6 curve 64-80. I watched every pitch, his sinker acted like a screwball, the Rangers commentators were talking about it. The sinker looked like a sinking screwball.

Different, I used Brooks Baseball, he used Fangraphs and Texas Leaguer's I believe. His has control ratings though, but I already got the go-ahead from Knight and Co. to use my edits for v3 of OSFM, I'll be updating as soon as the season starts as well. I plan to use SCEA's control ratings, probably a few tweaks and switchups based on secondary and tertiary, etc. options.

These are edits based off of last year, with a few 2012 edits for pitchers who had substantial 2012 data available, added or subtracted a pitch, or are in the process of converting from reliever to starter or vice versa

Here is the spreadsheet I created, it's in alphabetical order, but you can sort it by team name, etc.

                              A quick primer:

How did you come up with each pitch selection? I went through every pitcher on the list and cross-checked their repertoire using my own personal methods with Brook's classifications. I take into account speed, spin deflection, RPM, charts, and scouting reports.

Why do most players' sliders have a low movement rating?
What I found through in-game testing is that regardless of a pitch having a "0" movement rating, the pitch still moves. Most players' sliders move an average of 5 inches or less (most less), and high movement ratings for sliders should be reserved for guys with slow sweeping sliders. Also, movement is much more organic this year, with the pitcher's arm slot playing a significant role in determining movement direction.

Why is every pitch faster than what is listed in gameday, fangraphs, texas leaguers, etc. ? Brooks Baseball calculates speed 55ft from home plate instead of 60ft to take in account the average major leaguer's release point. Feel free to lower mph 1-2 ticks for fastballs and 1 mph for offspeed.

What about individual pitch command ratings? I have no idea how to come up with these ratings, its more complicated than strike% , I would just use SCEA's control ratings, since most edits are just to give proper movement to a pitch; if a pitch was added to a pitcher's repertoire, it was probably a 4th or 5th pitch that was not used very often, so give that pitch below average command to prevent overuse, since selection is tied to confidence which is tied to command of said pitch.

I'm not sure how or if these will be incorporated into the game, but if need be, I might consider updating the OSFM with these edits, unless MAVS wants to do it instead lol
So we just go in and edit the pitchers with the numbers you provided? Velocity from the chart to the Velocity in the edit screen and is the move the break ingame? And don't touch the control??

Pretty much, yeah. The velo readings are a little hot since they are from 55ft instead of 60, you only need to drop it 1mph though. My suggestion would be to use SCEA's control ratings, but you don't have to match breaking ball to breaking ball, changeup to changeup, etc. Whatever SCEA has for the secondary pitch, give that rating to the one I have on the chart. If a guy has added a pitch, make sure to give it a lower control rating than the previous pitch, since usage is tied to control. If you feel like waiting a bit, I'll have the sheet updated to include more 2012 data and eventually they'll be in v3 of the OSFM.
