Re: Classic Pitching Questions and Discussion

3-2 count? Depends on whos batting, whos pitching, score of game, etc, etc.

Tonight, I had an interleague game against the Nationals. Top of 10th, 2-2 game. Ian Desmond on 2nd. Ryan Zimmerman at the plate, 1 out, full count. Chris Sale on the mound, I decide to go after Zimmerman. Bad idea, 400 ft dong to left. Cost me the game. I usaully just try to get them to chase, but didnt want to risk a walk. So, I guess, it depends.

    Btw, are you using API?

I use API only when it makes sense, making constant adjustments to every pitch suggested (i.e. moving a fastball more towards the corner of the plate if it's more towards the middle).

Throw some down the middle on occasion. If you always try to paint corners the cpu will pick up on it.

          Exactly.

Not necessarily in early or hitter's counts, but I do aim somewhere in the heart of the K zone when either:

          A. Control with that day's pitcher is a memory.

          B. When a walk is literally unacceptable.

          Usually in 3 ball counts.

            heroesandvillains,

I see that I take almost the same approach to pitching as you do. Are you getting strikeouts at a realistic clip? If I get 8 in one game that is AMAZING for me. I usually get 6 at the most (even with great strikeout pitchers).

I've played about a month of baseball (I haven't really touched video games lately) and Sabathia has struck out 12 and 9 in two separate starts; Burnett 11 and I think 8.

I'm in the top third in overall strikeouts.

I've noticed that their are games where even a Sabathia type will be lucky to fan more than a couple, even with solid confidence. It's weird. And forget Nova and Garcia. I'm lucky to see 5 with either of them. Even on a good day.

I have to say the my strikeout numbers (being so realistic and such) are really one of my favorites parts to using the Classic interface. I mean, come on...

Who doesn't love knowing your ace can either mow them down to the extent of double digits, or end the day with a line of 6 strong but with only 3 K?

And Mariano?!?!!?? Forget about it. I catch so many guys looking with his cutter it feels like a real game.

Hang in there. K's come in stretches.

Last night I played my 1st game ever with classic

                Sabathia against the Angels
                6 IP 1H 0R/ER 5BB 7K 101 pitches

Don't know if I was doing it right though...I was always holding the button down until the controller vibrated?

Also do I need to adjust the pitch wilderness? Because it was wild as damn

With classic pitching you are holding or tapping "X" to determine the amount of effort put behind a pitch. I created this tutorial for people who were having trouble understanding classic. Holding or tapping "X" during different points of the pitcher's motion will result in varying amounts of effort put behind the pitch. I prefer the button press over the tap but you can do whichever you want.

                  Full motion

Keeping the X button pressed down, let up at three different points of the pitcher's windup to determine velocity (effort).

Slow velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher just starts his leg lift.

Medium velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher is at his max leg lift.

Maximum velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher finishes his leg lift and brings his leg towards the plate.

                  From the stretch

Slow velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher is in mid lift of his motion.

Medium velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher is in mid stride towards home.

Maxium velocity: Hold X and release when the pitcher has planted his foot towards home and is just starting to bring his arm forward to release the pitch.

Note: If you hold the X button through the entire pitcher's motion you will have max velocity and break but you will lose control and the ball will track away from your desired location.

Anyone down to re-test this with me? I've been moving my User Control and Consistency up and down the last couple of days and can't seem to find the right spot.
I want it where walks will happen, hangers will happen. But, studs and aces should be studs and aces. Currently, I have Control/Consistency at 3/5. I'll have stats after this game, pitching with Gallardo.

I feel like the best way to test is to put on paper what happens on each pitch. Was it a strike or ball? Did the pitch miss far or was it just off the black? # of hangers. I don't mind testing it and recording the data to excel...

I'll start with the same Human sliders as you. Which level are you pitching on?

Don't forget about the pitcher/batter analysis as it shows exactly where each pitch goes (the last 25, at least). And you're not just limited to looking at it in-game - you can screenshot the analysis screens from the XMB and keep a collection of those screenshots for the full analysis!

Just a thought, I would think that lowering human pitcher control would be the wrong way to go. I have found that with classic pitching the pitchers accuracy is already naturally reduced. Wouldn't raising it be the way to go? I'm going to test with all default sliders on the AS level to start.

Re: Classic Pitching Questions and Discussion

I have about 30 games of a franchise currently under progress (AS). Admittedly, I probably simmed maybe 5 or so games, but most of the numbers are me.

I think it was Default AS, with Power at 4 and Consistency at 6.

                              My impressions:

The CPU generally only rallied off of my relievers. Otherwise, their were way too manu quality starts (near 70% of games pitched, which seems to me to be too much).

Walks were surprisingly decent. But, see above. It's easy not to walk guys when the CPU doesn't make a habit out of rattling your starter.

HR's!!! That's like the only way the CPU scored.

SO: Perfect. Very reasonable on AS.

H/9: Perfect. Except, the CPU is HORRIBLE with RISP. I actually attribute this to my raised Consistency, however.

Come to think of it guys, if you prefer testing HOF...rather than dumbing down or making AS harder, I'm all in. I've played a few games on Default HOF, and though there are incredible moments, I do feel like BB may be a pretty big issue.

                              Whatever you all wanna do.

                                I'm pitching on HoF, using Marino's sliders with a Control/Consistency at 3/5.
To start the test, me and heroes were talking about either dropping CPU Contact or Timing to increase swings-and-misses and I feel their 'eye' is WAYYYY too good.

                                My start with Gallardo:
                                7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO (76% Strikes)

At one point, I struck out 4 in a row (3 swinging, 1 looking). I feel that if I leave 76% of my pitches around the plate, I will get hit up.

As for dropping Contact or Timing, they have only 8 hits on the game (Pirates). I feel if I drop the Contact slider a click, it will drop the hits down a tad, which almost seems TOO low.
