Out of curiosity do you call your own game more often or follow the catcher's calls? I ask because I'm torn, maybe I just need to incorporate a little of both as at times the catcher will get fastball happy and call it literally like 8-10 times in a row ignoring all other pitches that particular pitcher throws. Times like those I'll throw a change low and a majority of the time they will chase but makes me wonder why the catcher gets so fastball happy out of the blue. I'm left to assume it's a confidence or fatigue issue so they are calling more of that pitchers #1 pitch in those instances. Anyways, that's neither here nor there was just curious how you went about pitching.

I, for one, let my catcher call the game probably 80% of the time. If my pitcher isn't having much success with a certain pitch I will usually avoid it whenever my catcher calls for it. I'll still mix it in once in a while so I don't become too predictable. That backfired on me in the game I just finished though. I was in the bottom of the 11th against KC and had Luis Cessa pitching since I'd used my whole bullpen aside from Chapman. Anyway, Cessa's changeup wasn't working at all and he just walked Cain to load the bases for Hosmer with 1 out. Sanchez called for a changeup away but I went with a fastball on the hands. Well Hosmer turned on it and ripped a single down the line for the game winning hit. I would have been more angry at myself but I did come from 3 runs down late with a 2 run triple by Gardner in the 8th and a game tying solo homer by Carter leading off the 9th. I had bases loaded in the 11th but Judge and Gregorious both struck out to end the inning. Even losing this game is incredible.

Since the move to HOF I have taken a more hands on approach because when catchers are constantly calling the same pitch....not gonna work on HOF. I would say my ratio is probably 60/40 Catcher call to my own call.

I like shaking off the catcher too.....because if you don’t you will curse them for calling the wrong pitch when you have a feel of what is working well.

Remember too.....I play with all visual aides off so I have to “feel” what is working...I don’t have the confidence bar to aide me. I feel it is a more organic (I know over used word) experience. But not for faint of heart and only the most advanced players.

The reason this game is also so freaking amazing......it really rewards true baseball IQ. As a former player.....I really appreciate the attention to detail the game brings in the pitcher/batter showdown.

It is the core and soul of this great game. They represent it better than any baseball game ever has to date.

For what it's worth, I throw my own pitches 100% of the time. Never even look at the hand signals.

On another note, man I hate being away from this game for more than a couple of days. Reason number one is because I love this game. Reason number two is because I absolutely suck when I come back. I haven't been able to play since Wednesday of last week because adult things and I just fired it up twenty minutes ago. I can't hit worth a crap lol, swinging at garbage and not being patient. Ever happen to you guys??

Duly noted. What I'm about to ask might be incredibly dumb but when you say shake them off are you simply saying throwing the pitch you want too or is there an actual way to shake them off on the mound?

I'm shaking-off my catcher a lot more since the shift to HOF as well.

In some games though, I just have a feel for a particular pitch that day and feel more confident throwing it. When that pitch is working, you have to keep rolling with it and make the other team hit it. Other games, I just rely on my catcher to make the call...

And does anyone else find it a tad peculiar that the above paragraph sounded like a quote from a real life pitcher when I was talking about a video game? I mean, this is the amazing thing with classic pitching...there is so much nuance involved, and yet it is shrouded in mystery (like real pitching). It amazes me that such a simple control mechanism could result in SO much depth. Like real pitching, it is about feel, repetition, and having a plan...pretty daggone amazing if you ask me....

No, there is no shake-off per se.

Your catcher calls for an 0-2 fastball, after the guy just yanked the 0-1 pitch foul 500 feet over the left field grandstands, but you feel that an offspeed pitch of some sort is a much more prudent idea. (it is)

So, you press the square for the curveball, and you'll see the pitcher animation where he shakes his head.

What I have felt for many years, of which I will not litter this thread with my big idea, is that there ought to be a shake off, where the catcher will put down his second choice, or an alternative to the first call. This would then relate to passed balls and cross ups. The cross up, or catcher misplaying the ball would be based on the catcher being crossed up, rather than a random event. That is a topic for another thread, but just choose another pitch than the one the catcher called, and you have effectively, "shaken him off".

I'm sure he means just picking your own pitch/location. But...you can also step off the mound with L1 (which I sometimes do if it is a BIG pitch).

Thanks gents, was wondering having seen it mentioned a few times I wasn't sure if there was something I was completely unaware of or if it was as simply as just throwing the pitch you want regardless of what the catcher called for.

What I DO really like is when I have set up a hitter, and already know what my next pitch should be, based on my real-life experiences, and the catcher calls for that same pitch.

Locations need some work, as I think they would benefit from some real-life input on pitch locations (suggestions), and why.

I also think that some dynamic hot/cold zones, whereby you could keep track of how you have effectively attacked batters during a series, as well as career/season etc.

You pull up the hot/cold zone, and toggle left and right, which would render the zones for the last 5 games you have faced a batter. I know that I ought not throw Jayson Hayward a slider down and in historically, but maybe in the last 5 games he's got a hole there, so you can attack that zone in a more situation-ally-relevant manner, than his career splits with the inside/down pitches.

Well what a difference a day makes, that and calling my own game instead of following the catcher exclusively. Granted it helped that I was facing the White Sox who don't have a lot in the lineup outside of Frazier and Abreu but I'll take it. King Felix was on the mound to open the first series after the All-Star break and he turned in his best performance in months going 7.2 IP, 4 K's, 2 BB's, 0 Runs on 3 Hits. I'd have liked to have seen more in the way of strikeouts but can't complain too much as he was keeping them off balance all game long. It helped to consistently look and see what I started a batter with in the previous AB and never repeat that pitch to start the second AB, little things that I never paid any attention to as I was merely going through the motions of throwing whatever the catcher called for. I went on to win the opener 7-1, an unfortunate Nick Vincent fastball was hung and hit for a HR when I messed up on the release, other then that he struck out 2 in his 1.2 innings of work and looked the best he's looked since the start of the season.

I should have been calling my own game long ago. The catcher gets a little repetitive and ignores calling some pitches which causes them to lose confidence so as the game progresses you suddenly find yourself in a tough spot where you can really only locate 1 or 2 pitches it seems. I made a point of throwing all 5 of his pitches this last game so as the game got deeper in he was able to turn to any of them as he had at the very least established his ability to throw them earlier in the game which seemed to make a world of difference.

The West could be a wild race for the playoffs......

As you can see we've got 4 teams all within one game of the division and all 3 of the teams not in first are within one game of the wild card as well. It is shaping up to be a real dog fight down the stretch as we beat up on each other to see who can make it into the playoffs.

On a side note the trades have begun in earnest. The LA Dodgers traded for Brian Dozier to man second base with Logan Forsythe out for 1-2 months with a torn finger ligament. Boston traded for David Dahl as Mookie Betts is out for 5-6 months with a torn ACL. The Mets decided they needed yet another SP so they traded for Taijuan Walker and have an unreal rotation with Syndergaard, deGrom, Matz, Walker and Wheeler and it will only get better when Matt Harvey returns in 2 weeks from his injury. Those are the biggest trades to date but there's still 16 days until the deadline so I'd imagine there will be plenty more to come.

Who would have thought....with all those injuries you have been dealing with and playing through.....you are a game out of first place.

Now how rewarding does that feel?

Quick question for you guys that quick manage alot: do you find that your pitching gets shelled far more often that not? This isnt really specific to this slider set as I've experienced it with others and even on defaultish sliders. It's kinda taking the fun out of QM so I may just go back to full game.
