What you all need to remember is that the Sox and Yankees would not sign Santana for more than 5 yrs. There was a big article in the paper here on Sunday about how Santana's agent was probably gonna have to forget about the 7 yr deal, but now it looks like the Mets are willing to pay Santana $25 million when he is 36 yrs old.


As a Twins fan I am ambivalent about the trade. We sucked with Santana last year, no chance to sign him long term so I just wanted to get something for him before he left after next year and we get nothing ie Torii Hunter.

I hate the Twins.

Mets still need to work on their pitching rotation, though. One pitcher isn't gonna keep the Phils from eating up the rest of those old dudes.

I think you have to look at the big picture here.

Santana will make the Mets more money than they'll pay him, he sells tickets, jerseys, creates a positive vibe around a team coming off one of the biggest chokes in big league history; it just makes sense.

The Yankees couldn't have got Santana anyway. He'd have put them so far over the luxury tax threshold that they'd essentially be paying double for him. They should have bit the bullet and dealt for Miguel Cabrera rather than pay Rodriguez, but that's another story.

Yeah, there are some iffy ones there, but who doesn't have the same problem? There are very few teams in the majors with a solid 1-5 rotation. Solidifying that number 1 spot just helps things fall into place.

The Mets haven't had a pitcher of this caliber since maybe David Cone in the early 90s. Pedro in 05/06 was really good when healthy but Santana is at a different level right now.

I think Pelfrey will be in the pen to start the year personally or AAA. He's not close to being a starter in the bigs yet IMHO.

This year is going to be a great baseball season in the NL East- the Mets/Phillies games are going to be epic.

Pelfrey could be a decent back end starter, and really that's all he needs to be. I don't think he's as effective coming out of the pen. Have they totally ruled out Heilman's wish to start?

I agree about Pelfrey. The other thing is the Mets need to prepare for El Duque's 2 month long vacation from some old-man related disease (neck arthritis etc.). I refuse to count on El Duque for the post-season or anything after the last two seasons.

I didn't realize Livan was still out there; I kind of forgot that he existed. He does seem like a Minaya type guy (latin, retread, questionable character).

This trade makes me wonder if Santana tied the Twins hands a little bit with his no trade clause and forced his way onto the Mets. Unless the Red Sox lowered their offer, this one makes no sense otherwise.
