they are calling Pelfrey the #6 starter - so I think he will shuffle between the pen and some starts... El Duque would be #5 (as it is right now). I thought they were holding off on Livan unless they couldn't get Johan though...

They just need to treat El Duque like the Chisox did a few years ago. Give him extra rest and even put him on the DL when hes not hurt so that he can make it thru the year. I seriously doubt they would spend any more money after dropping 150 mil on Johan.

Moves like that make you scratch your head.

You have a farm system filled with arms. Surely there's someone down there who can do a middle relief job cheaper and more effectively than the old man Duque.

I don't think Livan is the answer in the rotation either. He basically quit on his teammates in Washington; not the type of guy you want after last season's collapse.

The problem is these are young guys with little experience. To bring them up only to place them in relief situations with the game on the line would be suicide to their confidence.

I will forever point to Heilman as a perfect example of this. Solid guy who was just overused and put in the wrong situations way too often.

I dont see how you keep Pelfry out of the rotation this year. Some argue he is better than Maine. I think El Duqe goes to the 'pen and becomes a spot starter.

They can argue all they want but the proof is in the pudding. Pelfrey hasn't proven to be a reliable starter but Maine has.

Are you a Mets fan? Or are you just going on hearsay?

Pedro Feliciano is way unrated as a reliever IMO, he proves every year he can pitch in big spots.

So as a diehard would you be confident with Pelfrey on the rotation? I know I sure as heck wouldn't! The kid may have potential but he wasn't there yet last year, IMHO.

If Sanchez can come back to anywhere near pre-injury form I think the bullpen will be ok. I still say they need to trade Heilman for relief man because I do not think his heart is into the bullpen. He wants to start.

If I was a Twins' fan I'd be upset with what they're getting for Santana. The Red Sox and Yankees were offering much better packages back in December.
I don't mind since it only helps the Tribe's chances of repeating in the Central.

I completely agree with you.

Many Mets fans want to lynch the guy... but I actually feel a bit bad for him. I think he's unhappy in the pen and wants to be a starter. He has the potential do it too...

I'd rather have a guy with talent over a used up veteran. If you want to find out how mentally tough the kid is, let him pitch. The Astros used to do it well by bringing them up and putting them in the pen early on to find their feet. Personally, I'd throw them into the back end of the rotation and stick with them. I understand how it is in New York, but you can't bow to the media pressure when it comes to playing young guys.

I think you're right about Heilman being somewhat overused. They worked him like a dog in the second half of 2005 and he was lights out, started 2006 well and then just hit a wall when that slider he throws just flattened out. He's rebounded alright though, and was pretty good last year. I wouldn't be at all concerned with him.

I still think you should let the farm hands compete for the jobs in Spring, and give very little guarantees to guys like El Duque.
