Honestly, I have no idea what the Red Sox most recent offer was. According to bergie they lowered it significantly which made the Mets the best offer on the table.

However, there's no way this deal comes close to what the original Red Sox offer was so one has to assume if that deal was still on the table there were other factors at play.

Some combination of Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Maserson and Jed Lowrie and one other prospect. I think the offer was either Ellsbury or Lester, not both.

Works for me though, I didn't want to trade Hughes and didn't want Boston to get Santana.

Some combination of Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Maserson and Jed Lowrie and one other prospect. I think the offer was either Ellsbury or Lester, not both.

I wouldn't have done the trade either... They're giving up one decent player at the least with upside...

Lester AND Ellsbury and I pull the trigger.

Not sure if I agree with that sentiment- Boston's package may have been better initially but it hardly blows the Mets out of the water. Lester is not a slam-dunk pitching prospect by any means. His best WHIP at AAA was about 1.37 and his big league WHIP was around 1.60. One of the pitchers the Mets are sending, Deolis Guerra, put up solid numbers as an 18 year old in High-A ball. He's a damn good prospect.

Ellsbury is a nice prospect, but he's not going to be a franchise changer. I don't think Gomez is as good as him though but I think Gomez absolutely has a higher ceiling.. If you throw in Humber and Mulvey, I don't see how the Red Sox package is a slam dunk. It might be marginally better but its not one that they will regret passing on.

I personally thought any package with Hughes was, far and away, the best package. That guy is a superstar in the making but it seems the Yankees didn't want to move him. He's much better than any individual player that the Red Sox or Mets offered.

Hughes + Kennedy (if that was offered) blows any Red Sox or Mets offer out of the water but it doesn't seem the Yankees budged on that.

Wasn't that all they were offering though? I think the key was quantity in addition to quality for this trade. The Twins actually get 4 really good prospects were if they fail with 2 guys, they still come out on top since they did a 4 for 1.

Call me crazy, but I'm almost releaved.

I always supported the Lester package and probably wouldn't have been too upset if they gave up Ellsbury instead. But this thing was waaaay too drawn out for the Twins to settle on something that ... in my opinion ... wasn't worth waiting for. Johan wanted the Mets. And the Red Sox played the perfect spoiler for the other NY team while being a legit contender to land the guy without losing a single opening day player. Well played by Boston, and congrats to Cashman for winning out with Hank. Shame on neither of the LA teams to make a bid with all those prospects.

Great job by the Mets. Experts seem to think they didn't give up much. I don't know the Mets prospects very well, but this seems like a very favorable trade. They have to pay the big contract, but who cares. That is the easy part, they have money.

That had nothing to do with it. Bill Smith was put in a pretty tough position. He is a first year GM and wasn't able to re-sign Johan due to our cheapass owner, which was his first intention. He was unable to get what he wanted from the Red Sox or the Yankees, whom I am not 100% convinced were willing to part with Hughes so he did the prudent thing and waited. Once the Red Sox realized the Yankees weren't serious about their willingness to give up Hughes, they altered their offer. Today Smith called all three teams involved and said to make their best offer and the Yankees didn't respond and the Red Sox altered theirs. It seems that Smith was damned if he did since he was unable to land what he wanted and damned if he didn't since Johan wasn't taking our offer.
