The buzz in the industry Friday was that Santana's agents, Peter and Ed Greenberg, initially asked for the $28 million per year listed in Roger Clemens' prorated contract with the Yankees last season -- which would have amounted to a six-year, $168 million extension. That amount would not have included either a signing bonus or the $13.25 million Santana is scheduled to earn this season. So his total package would have topped $190 million.

also depends on how bad santana wants to be on the mets and how bad his agents want him there as well. heck he might be thinking if he holds out now next year the yankees will pay 200M for him. not likely but who knows what santanas opinion is of the whole thing.

Hmmm..good point on maybe considering holding out and waiting to become a free agent..

on a side note, what happens if they dont get the deal done by 5 and the trade never goes through? huge backlsh really? im sure press would be all over it but really the trade is contingent upon this so are the mets really that much up against the wall? its not much different than the twins making the mets include fernando martinez and the mets saying no thanks. now the mets can say no thanks to a 160M debt.

If they don't get it done, they can ask for an extension from MLB.

Yeah, im pretty sure there is a work around this deadline and will prolly ask for an extension. If 5 ET hits and a deal hasnt been made, i dont think the deal is over.

Which they would almost definitely get. It's in everyone's best interests for Santana to go to the Mets.

Actually, MLB rarely grants them. The parties have to show that they are very close to a deal.

The Mets' 5 p.m. ET deadline to negotiate an extension with Johan Santana has passed, with no word yet on whether the Mets and the lefty's representatives were able to come to an agreement on a contract extention for the sensational southpaw.

Mets just asked for a 2 hr extension according to Francessa and MLB will almost certainly grant it.

The union would absolutely want this deal to get done as would a host of others like camulos said.

WFAN Radio in New York reported Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. that the New York Mets and pitcher Johan Santana remain about $10 million apart in an attempt to finalize a deal for the Cy Young Award winner by the 5 p.m. deadline

That was mainly inference from Mike and the Mad Dog- they were basically comparing reported numbers.
