Congrats to the Mets on landing Santana. I wish the Cubs could have gotten in on the trade but it was never likely to happen.

I'm not overly disappointed with this trade since we're filling a major hole in center field. I like the direction we're (the Twins) are headed in, with the new arrival of our GM, Bill Smith. I doubt we'll come close to competing this season, but that wasn't the goal once we lost out on Hunter. Give us two or three seasons, and we'll be a force to reckon with, in the AL Central. Don't forget we still have Francisco Liriano to go with along with the other pitching prospects in our system. If there's one department we're not lacking in, that's pitching. We've had one of the better bullpens in baseball since 2002, and our rotation is consistently among the league leaders in ERA. Losing Santana and Carlos Silva this off-season will hurt for the time being, but I like our chances with Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Boof Bonser, Nick Blackburn, and the countless other starting pitchers looming around Triple-A.

With Johan Santana all but gone, pending him signing a contract, I think it's time to focus our attention on trading Joe Nathan. If we're going to completely retool this team, we need to get rid of our bigger contracts. Nathan is a free agent to be, so it's unlikely he'll be back anyways, plus I like our chances with Juan Rincon or Pat Neshek as our closer. Ideally we would acquire more positional prospects in a Nathan trade, but we'll see.

What I don't understand is the Twins are opening a new ballpark in a few years. Why not lock up Santana with a long term deal? When the new ballpark opens fans are going to come and they will have the money to pay him.

I understand the 3 prospect pitchers werent as highly rated as the ones being offered by the Yanks and BoSox but c'mon...Santana pretty much gets to choose where he wants to go because he can invoke his no trade clause. If he wants the Mets and the Mets want him then the Twins are pretty much forced to make a deal. Besides, Gomez is no slouch. He is young, fast, strong, and a big dude. Dude has talent and will do well in Minny.

In NY he got no run because he was stuck behind the more seasoned vets Beltran, Green, and Alou. And Chavez' glove was too good to not play as a 4th OFer. Is it the best deal for Minny? No. Is it a bad deal? No.

You know what a bad deal is? A bad deal is dealing Kasmir to Tampa for Zambrano (not the good Zambrano either).

we still need some work, I'm hearing that after the Mets sign Johan that they should still go after Livan Hernandez and moe El'duc to the Bullpen, they say Livan is a n innings eater.

Moves like that make you scratch your head.

You have a farm system filled with arms. Surely there's someone down there who can do a middle relief job cheaper and more effectively than the old man Duque.

I don't think Livan is the answer in the rotation either. He basically quit on his teammates in Washington; not the type of guy you want after last season's collapse.

they are calling Pelfrey the #6 starter - so I think he will shuffle between the pen and some starts... El Duque would be #5 (as it is right now). I thought they were holding off on Livan unless they couldn't get Johan though...
