Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres continue to make progress in trade negotiations around pitcher Jake Peavy, but at the same time, San Diego is talking with the Chicago Cubs about the All-Star -- with the Padres and Chicago engaging a third team as part of their proposals.
Some sources believe that a trade of Peavy, while not imminent, is inevitable, and could occur prior to Thanksgiving. The Padres are in the midst of a significant payroll cut: If San Diego -- which withdrew a contract offer to closer Trevor Hoffman on Monday night -- eventually trades both Peavy and Brian Giles, as expected, then the team's 2009 payroll will be about half of what it was in 2008.
The Braves and Padres have settled on two pieces of the package that Atlanta would send to San Diego -- shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Braves likely would include one of two young pitchers, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. The two sides are at odds over the other pieces in the deal; the Padres are known to have interest in young pitcher Jeffrey Locke.
The Cubs and Padres have talked about a deal built around Josh Vitters, the Cubs' top pick from 2007. But unlike the Braves, Chicago is not steeped in pitching, and so the Padres and Cubs are in the process of drawing in a third team to their talks, and that third team would be the side that would flip the pitching necessary to San Diego, in order to make the deal work for the Padres.
Peavy, 27, won the 2007 Cy Young Award, and went 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 2008. He is signed through 2013, and currently, he has a full no-trade clause and the right to veto any proposal. The Braves and Cubs are among the teams that he would consider, as he has indicated to the Padres.
During the process of considering possible deals for Peavy, the Padres have talked with numerous teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros and New York Yankees.

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
I really like Josh Vitters but its not everyday you have a chance to grab a guy like Jake Peavy. Hopefully we can find a team to deal some pitching and we can get this thing done.
If we do this deal and somehow resign Dempster this will no doubt be the best staff in baseball. With Zambrano, Peavy, Harden, Dempster, and, Lilly."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
From what I've read, Atlanta is possibly thinking about moving Escobar to which I think would be a horrible trade. I love how he plays, in that he has a rocket arm (better than Furcal's) is a heady player and very good in the clutch. I know the Braves need pitching but I wouldn't include Yuni in it.
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing Kelly Johnson leave, or Francoeur, Matt Diaz,...Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Kelly Johnson has been rumored to St.Louis for Ryan Ludwick. But that was when the Cardinals thought they were getting Matt Holliday, not sure how that stands now.
The Braves have other options at SS which is what is allowing them to dangle Escobar in the deal. Omar Infante, Brent Lillibridge and Martin Prado could all step in and play SS. They may not have the arm or the bat Escobar has but they could do the job.
The Braves have to do something to get starting pitching. With Hudson out and Glavine and Smoltz likely gone the Braves are faced with the possiblity of a rotation after Jair Jurrjens of Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, Charlie Morton and Chuck James. Campillo was decent but the other three were terrible.
There have been rumors that the Braves are interested in Brad Penny and Jon Garland. Either one of them would help but neither one has the ace potential that a healthy Jake Peavy has.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Co-sign. I've heard Pie, Marshall, and Theriot are some of the names who have been thrown out there for a trade.
Here is a portion of Ken Rosenthal's article today:
The Cubs and Padres, meanwhile, continue to discuss the same list of six to eight names from which the Padres would choose in a deal for Peavy. The Padres then would have the option of spinning one or more of those players to other clubs.Last edited by Herky; 11-12-2008, 06:24 PM.GT: Herkyalert

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
The Atlanta Braves, full-steam ahead in their pursuit of right-hander Jake Peavy, are offering a four-player package of players, and San Diego is expected to request that Peavy waive his no-trade clause so the deal can be completed, CBSSports.com has learned.
Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, said Wednesday evening that he had not spoken with Padres general manager Kevin Towers. And if that conversation takes place on Thursday, it still may be a bit before the Padres and Braves receive an answer -- Peavy is scheduled to fly home from a trip to Puerto Rico and will be traveling much of the day.
Under terms of the deal discussed by the Braves and Padres, San Diego would receive shortstop Yunel Escobar, Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of two starting pitchers -- Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes -- and either reliever Blaine Boyer or one of two minor-league left-handers (one of which is believed to be Jeff Locke).Comment

Latest rumor on this is that the Padres and Braves have agreed to a trade and are awaiting Peavy's approval. The Braves would send four players, SS Yunel Escobar, OF Gorkys Hernandez, either P Jo-Jo Reyes or Charlie Morton, and either reliever Blaine Boyer (yay, Peavy for relief pitcher) or one of two left-handers (Jeff Locke mentioned as one of the left-handers).

Nice trade Atlanta, you basically gave up nothing for something.

Come on Hendry. Pull a last minute miracle and bring Peavy to the Cubs.
If the Peavy deal doesn't happen, resigning Dempster needs to be Hendry's number one priority this offseason."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

The bad thing is while the Cubs may think a deal centering around Sean Marshall and Felix Pie is a good one--no one else seems to agree with them. Like you said they should focus on re-signing Dempster and go from there.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
You can cross Atlanta out for now. GM Wren has stated today that he will address pitching through free agency, hoping to sign two of the three: Burnett, Dempster, and Lowe.
I'm glad the Padres didn't budge at that proposed deal.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Ken Rosenthal is now reporting the Yankees are in on the Peavy sweepstakes.
Kevin Towers broke off talks with them earlier because he was trying to stick to the agreement of keeping Peavy in the NL. He told the Yanks if the Braves fell through, he'd start talking to them. Well now they're talking.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried.
