Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
I think it will be more likely the Yankees will offer Hughes and/or Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and maybe a couple of minor leaguers. With the Padres screwing up the deal with Braves they just might take it.
As for those needs you listed, Either Matt Antonelli or Travis Denker will likely be at 2B next season. They still have Khalil Greene at SS (even though he appears to be made of glass). Nick Hundley will probably be the startng catcher. Remember that whatever the Padres don't get for peavy they will try to get for Giles. If not, Towers is going to learn real quickley that you are not going to solve all of your roster problems with one trade.Comment

I have a feeling Greene is gone as soon as Peavy leaves. Stellar defense, but he swings for the fences in every AB, and in Petco, you can't get away with that. I hope that, for his sake, he gets sent to a ballpark where he'll be able to excel, but as long as he's a Padre, he'll be a .240 hitter for the rest of his career.
I won't be surprised to see Giles leave, but the biggest problem there is that he doesn't want to leave. I'm sure you remember the whole deal with him and the BoSox back in Septemeber. He's one of the few guys who has been able to really excel in Petco, and made the transition once he realized that he can't hit 30+ HR's there.
Hundley, I'm comfortable with. He did a better job than his counterparts when it came to throwing runners out, and his bat was coming along just fine. Sure, he's probably only a .250 to .260 hitter, but then again, not many catchers are that great at the plate.Through music, you can live forever...TEAMS: San Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, Notre Dame Fighting IrishComment

I know we have Antonelli and Greene, but during Antonelli's time in the bigs this past season, I wasn't that impressed. His defense was average, but his batting was horrible. Petco or not, having a BA under .200 is pathetic.

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Edgar came out swinging, and looked great for about a month or so when Iguchi went down, but I have no idea what happened after that. If he can go back to the way he started when he first came in, I wouldn't be opposed to him starting at 2B.Through music, you can live forever...TEAMS: San Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, Notre Dame Fighting IrishComment

The Padres are a complete joke. It's too bad we fell for the stadium proposal and allowed them to stay in the city. They are a complete embarrassment.Comment

At least there are the Angels up north to root for, but yeah, this past year the true colors of this front office, or actually this whole organization, has shown. Divorce or no divorce, it's been ****ing ugly.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
I think the main problem is his defense. Once his bat started slowing down, there wasn't much of a reason to put him out there, but our other options weren't any better.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Angels are easier for me to get to, have better parking, and don't have the ridiculous TV contract that keep me from watching games despite living in the their primary broadcast area.
I can live with the Chargers, who want to win, but are simply incompetent, the Padres are just fleecing the fans, and I have had enough..Comment

It's been more than just this past year. It's been from 1999 on.

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
I can see the Yanks getting rid of Cano in the deal for Peavy. I really like Cano, but last season was atrocious. I'd like to give him another year or so to figure it out but if you can get a pitcher like Jake Peavy, Robinson Cano all of the sudden becomes expendable.Comment

Re: Where Will Jake Peavy Land?
Padres close to a deal with Cubs
The Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks have reached a point where it will be a stunner if the Cubs don’t acquire Peavy, who immediately would become the best pitcher on a staff that already boasts Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Rich Harden.
That’s because two general managers -– the Padres’ Kevin Towers and the Cubs’ Jim Hendry -- are working hard to make it happen. If it doesn’t happen, it’ll become one of the few trades -– maybe the first -- that couldn’t be made when BOTH general managers were motivated to get it done.
Towers told reporters on Monday that the Cubs were the only team he is continuing to talk to about Peavy and that making a Peavy trade was his full focus at the winter meetings. He then went out and proved it by working to facilitate a potentially four-team trade that would send Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia and Felix Pie to Baltimore and bring back pitchers Garrett Olson, J.A. Happ (the Northwestern product) and Sean Marshall for the Padres.Aaron
