Re: The Hot Stove League Thread

Pretty funny comment by someone on twitter that replied.

"He already left Cuba, why would he want to go back" LOL

Also, I really hope Chicago picks him up. We have the money to spend, and I believe it's worth the risk, plus it would at lease salvage a lackluster offseason for us.

Oswalt will choose between cardinals and rangers
      Peter Gammons @pgammo
We shall see, but 2 GMs think Oswalt wants to reuinite w/ Ryan and M. Maddux in Texas, 1 says St. Louis.
Please go to St. Louis, Roy.

Fielder has hit 9 HR in 50 games at PNC Park, 4 HR in 17 games at Petco, 6 HR in 21 games at Dolphins Stadium, 9 HR in 24 games at Turner Field, 1 in 6 games at Comerica, 1 in 3 games at Progressive Field. He can hit HR in big ballparks.

I do agree, though. Prince Fielder is obviously a powerful player and you bring up an excellent point about the other smaller AL Parks.

Without looking it up, I feel like the NL has more of the larger parks that fly balls go to die.
If you look at the top 10 as far as HR factor (most hrs given up), 5 are in the NL. 2 of those are in the division he's leaving, and #11 was his home park.

I think Oswalt wants to be back in Texas. How was he in Philly last season?

He was still good, but his stats regressed. He's no longer a TOR starter but is still a good middle of the rotation guy.

Roy Oswalt? Really Nolan? Unless he finds a time machine or becomes one of the pitching coaches, I don't want him here. Scott Feldman is insurance enough.

Oswalt still has it. Only he gets injured a lot now. If he's healthy he can be really good, not so much if he's not

As long as Prince can still get 100-120 RBIs, I could care less about his HR numbers.

He'll hit his fair share of homers. But he can walk up there blindfolded and still post a .400 OBP. His power can drop and he's still a very productive player.

ZiPS projections for Prince through 2020.

                          2012 - .275/.394/.504, 33 HR, 97 RBI
                          2013 - .273/.394/.504, 32 HR, 96 RBI
                          2014 - .272/.390/.496, 31 HR, 94 RBI
                          2015 - .266/.383/.479, 29 HR, 88 RBI
                          2016 - .262/.374/.462, 26 HR, 82 RBI
                          2017 - .259/.369/.440, 22 HR, 74 RBI
                          2018 - .255/.361/.424, 20 HR, 69 RBI
                          2019 - .253/.351/.415, 18 HR, 63 RBI
                          2020 - .248/.338/.388, 13 HR, 50 RBI

                          These aren't numbers of a guy who's worth 9 years, $214 Million.

I heard ZiPS is accurate for the three line numbers of AVG, OBP, and SLG, but there a bit conservative on the counting stats like HR and RBI.

I can't remember but I always had problems with projections ever since I saw one predict Chad Huffman would hit 19 home runs and have 400 at-bats... He's certainly not worth that amount, but everyone knows baseball economics is broken. Good players can now get $20+ a year, which means a mediocre player can get $10+ a year.

Those projections are a little conservative...I can't see him not having at least two or three 100 RBI seasons.

RBI is a finicky stat because you have to have production up front in order to bat in the runs. The three numbers that you should look for up top are batting average, on base percentage, and slugging.
