Cool Tony Fernandez fact I never thought about.

He was teammates on the Jays with Buck Martinez for a few years to start his career. Buck Martinez was his manager in his final season with the Jays.

Okay, I just watched segments of Rob Manfred's most recent press conference on MLB Tonight (regarding the Astros situation). He just said this:

"Once you go down that road of changing what happens on the field, I just don't know how you decide where you stop."

This is the most hypocritical statement I have heard in a very, very long time.

          MLB Off-Topic

For those wondering what the best player in the league thinks, Mike Trout is not a fan of the Astros players or the non-punishment they were given. He sounded in favor of stripping the title. Wow.

Damn baseball, ya done ****ed up

Also, Justin Turner flamed Manfred: it’s called the commissioners trophy, and the only thing devaluing about it now is that it says commissioner on it.

I’ve not seen a commish get destroyed so openly like this, even Goodell. Manfred coming out to defend his punishments and also that any retaliation would be dealt with more severely was a big mistake. He’s a punk.

I'm literally in favor of a mutiny. MLB should go full lockout till this trash can is replaced and correct punishment is given for those cheating clowns.

Not like that would happen. But I'm very worried about this sport going forward with dip**** as commish.

the bad thing is, attendance will go up when Houston goes on the road. everybody gonna wanna get their boos in. you can't really encourage fans to stay away, that's cutting off your nose to spite your face. on the other hand, baseball could use a new Evil Empire. New York just hasn't been the same since the Boss passed. I mean, the Yankees have been more lovable than the Cubs lately. AFAIC, Houston makes every bit as fine as an Evil Empire as anybody.

Nah like I said. It won't happen, and it can't. I think baseball actually may be re-energized with this whole Houston scandal. A lockout usually hurts more then it helps. That would be disastrous.

But I am nervous about having to deal with Manfred for ex amount of years. The sport is not in good hands period.

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

All these years, he kind of went under the radar. Silver is the gold standard, Goodell was the guy everyone dumped on. But Goodell stopped giving a ****, he just doesn't say anything anymore. He just does his thing gets the heat and goes back to his cave. And now, in the space of a few weeks Manfred is really getting his coming out party. He is just getting torched left and right, and this is coming from someone that, even though I think he was too lenient with Hinch and Luhnow and ****ed up by not punishing (or at least trying to punish the players), I actually think he sounded reasonably on that ESPN interview.

But since I really dislike a lot of the changes he has brought in to the game I don't give a ****. As far as I see it, he is getting what was coming to him even if it is for the wrong thing.

Silver doesn't do anything. He has the luxury of a sport that is still considered cool by young people. Goodell has to deal with BS on a weekly basis. Manfred has to deal with his sport being criticized 24/7 from all angles. I'd rather be the commisioner of the MLS or XFL.

Leadership is always hard; there is a reason they say its lonely at the top...I think all of these commissioners are smart people, but I disagree with the direction Manfred wants to take baseball (for that matter, I don't think Silver is the gold standard....he has a great sport and is always trying to mess with it as well).

I wish for once baseball would let someone who is a baseball fan 1st (someone who isn't a lawyer/businessman) run baseball. I know Bob Costas name has been thrown out, but I think he's too old at this point. An ex-player who truly loves the game would be great, IMO.

My first post on here using Manfred's name was on May 27th, 2016. I have 25 more posts after that using his name alone. For the most part, I actually tend to leave him nameless in his atrocious wrongdoings. I've probably made over 100 posts on his matters which I deem controversial.

He may have flown under the public's radar in your eyes or on Twitter or what have you, but he has been a pox in the league since he first decided he wanted to change everything under the sun. Some may speak of their inevitable fates (such as DH in the NL), but he lobbies hard for some and is getting things instituted on some level, some already up in the MLB.

I'm not saying the league can't be improved. In fact, I am for banning extreme defensive shifts (though I have been since the early 2000's). I just feel like what Manfred is trying to do though is give himself credit for changes that are made so that he will always be historically remembered for it. Changing things for the sake of changing them.

How would that be better, specifically? Would Costas be for robot umps? Would Costas be for extended netting? Would Costas be for banning the shift? I don't like Costas, he is stuck in the past.

I love how you say that you are for improvements and then cite "banning extreme defensive shifts" as an example. I strongly disagree, I think the increase in using the shift is one of my favorites changes in favors in the last 20 years.

The thing I dislike the most about sports, in general, is changing the rules. 4 pointer, pushing the 3 point line farther, automatic walk, 3 minimum batters faced, extra point moved back. And I also understand that when I say changing the rules I mostly mean the rules that were in place when I started paying attention (I have no doubt I would have hated the introduction of the 3 point line, or the DH).

The, at least to me, unbelievable thing about the shift is that it came about inside the context of the current existing game (I know the shift wasn't invented 20 years ago, just the reliance of it). Here is a 140 year game, and still, in this day an age, with the tool available to it with a little imagination and data analysis a groundbreaking scheme was devices to gain a clean competitive advantage. Frankly, I see the defensive shift and I see a ****ing miracle. You and I couldn't be further apart on this subject.

Yeah I do agree that a commish is never really going to be liked, but Silver is as close as one can be to that distinction.

I mean a commish is working for the owners. We cheer for the teams and players, not owners. Yet the owners basically have all the say through the commish in how the game is presented and played. It’s not so surprising when the owners are in it to make money that they’re doing things solely for that purpose, no matter how blasphemous. I just think baseball is a sport where making those types of changes will face the most resistance. Some more worthy of the fans ire then others.

Whoever said Goodell comes out, catches the crap we throw at him, then crawls back to his hole was so spot on. He’s learned by now that he’s in a no win position. Trying to explain around why you’re doing what you’re doing is fruitless because we know there’s what you want us to hear and what you’re trying to accomplish (keep clean image, appease stakeholders, make money in whatever order). Manfred hasn’t gotten the beatdown yet, which I think is why he’s come out so strong lately. But he’s learning now.

No one can outweasel Gary Bettman, though. No one can explain to me why he shakes like he does when he talks. He constantly looks like he’s afraid he’s gonna get a wedgie and his lunch money stolen.
