As an A's fan who despises seeing that play constantly I would have to say that as much as I would like to agree with you, you are in the minority and the multiple replays over the years have proven the call wasn't wrong.

I still dont see where Posada tagged him prior to Giambi hitting the plate. I haven't seen other angles though.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

It's a dumb law. Agreed. But 79 grams of Mary J in your car? That is also really dumb. If he just had a few G's but damn that makes him look like he's dealing.

I go into hibernation mode during the MLB offseason, but what's the inside story for why the Red Sox dealt away Betts and were unwilling to sign him long-term? It's still hard to believe that a big-market, prestige franchise let a superstar walk away.

And to think I was legit worried that he'd never play a game for us and we basically swapped Verdugo/Downs for David Price's deadweight contract.

I think it had to do with the luxury tax? They still have several large contracts on the books, so I think it had something to do with that.

Yeah, Bloom wanted to get the two biggest contracts off the books. And now here we are. 4th worst record in the league, but at least we have the uh...future.

Still love Mookie though, he's still my favorite active player.

It was a little coincidental though, nearly 100 years to the day of the last time the Sox got rid of a 'once-in-a-lifetime' player during a global pandemic.

Yeah, I talked about the deterrent effect of the luxury tax a few posts ago - after running up the highest payrolls in baseball history, the Dodgers didn't want to pay an extra huge premium for Zack Greinke's decline years - but still, I don't know how you don't back up the Brinks truck on a potential inner-circle HOFer like Betts.

Shoutout to OOTP for giving me an outlet to imagine a baseball world without Manfred...

He supports expanded playoffs and California Rule extra innings, but reversing the universal DH and is against extreme shifts; basically the polar opposite of the vast majority of baseball fans.

                          My stances:
-Expanded playoffs could/would work when MLB expands to 32 teams, but not before.
-The California Rule is dumb and irrelevant to modern day baseball, because teams operate as if the runner isnt even there.
-I'd much rather have pitchers not get hurt by having to bat when they're essentially an automatic out by giving up just a tiny bit extra strategy. Plus, it evens out both leagues.
-Limiting extreme shifts would be like hockey banning empty nets. If you dont like defenses loading up on a side of the field, adjust.

I don't yet miss that used car salesman Manferd replaced, but I'm getting closer all the time. I keep expecting Manferd's next move to legalise aluminum bats for MLB. either that, or maybe robot fans in the stands and robot owners upstairs

                              Re: MLB Off-Topic

I love how ESPN writes a story about how Kevin Kiermaier is upset at not being a finalist for the Golden Glove but they didn't bother to write a story about the GG finalists being announced (I didn't know that the finalists had been released till I saw the KK story) in the first place.

                              Then, the KK story says:

Finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award at each position were picked purely by numbers this season, and the process did not include input from managers or coaches as it usually does. In the past, a computer component was part of the process -- but not the entire one.
But it doesn't explain what "purely by numbers" means.

I go to MLB.com to check it out and at least they wrote about the finalists but also don't explain which numbers were used to come up with the list.

                              Finally, from Rawlings website:

Historically, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners have been determined by a vote from 30 managers’ and up to six of their respective coaches. Each manager and coach vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, as part of its collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) has previously comprised approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers and coaches’ vote continuing to carry the majority.

Due to the compressed 2020 season, the Award qualifications have been amended to rely solely on the SDI which draws on and aggregates two types of existing defensive metrics: those derived from batted ball location-based data and those collected from play-by-play accounts. SDI utilizes MLBAM’s Statcast, Sports Information Solutions data, and STATS, LLC data as well as traditional statistics with advanced analysis. For 2020 Award consideration, pitchers must have pitched at least 50 innings, catchers must have played in at least 29 games and infielders/outfielders must have completed at least 265 defensive innings. Each player qualifies at the position he has played at most (SDI is only for play at qualified position).
                              Great job everyone.
