Godspeed Mr. Sunshine Ernie Banks, it's great day for a ballgame.
MLB would do well to have at least one doubleheader scheduled for every day of every season.
Banks mark of over 2500 games & no post-season is one of those that will never be equaled or surpassed,
not in today's climate of 10 team playoffs, though Adam Dunn gave it a good ride.

Make a rule about how many players can be on each side of 2B in the infield. Pretty simple actually, but I would hate it if they did this.

Y'all really need to pump the brakes on the "death of baseball" stuff. College has had a pitch clock in place for years now and to be quite honest, most of the time I even forget it's there. I think I've seen a warning actually given out maybe twice, and that was it. Something like 25 seconds starting as soon as the pitcher gets the ball is more than enough time to regain himself, hit the rosin if he needs to, get the sign, and begin his motion. This "walking around the mound after every pitch" routine needs to get axed.

The beauty of baseball is that you can't sit on the ball and play keep away like you can in football, soccer, hockey, or basketball. Every team is guaranteed 9 innings of ball, weather permitting. There's nothing beautiful about taking a 2 run lead in the 5th inning and then taking the air out of a ballpark by taking a stroll after every pitch and going to the rosin bag nonstop.

Now, outlawing defensive shifts I take issue with. Baseball is the most strategy based out of the big 4 sports and outlawing shifts would only inhibit it.

I wouldn't hate it if they did this but it'd be very interesting to see the reaction of managers late in the game when they try to employ the shift.

Actually they should allow teams a set number of shifts per game (maybe 5 times a game) so that way no one is happy. Those are often the best solutions.

Yeah. I don't understand why they'd wait until a day later to announce he had a heart attack. Gets everybody thinking the wrong thing.

Oh well...at least now we can start thinking about how the Cubs will rightfully honor him.

I get that there's a lack of offense, but I don't understand the idea of boosting offense by handcuffing defense. How about these guys learn to hit the ball hard the other way?

Except, we've never seen this in baseball before. I'm sure if shifts were like this in the '60s when offense was going down the drain they'd definitely ticker around with it a lot worse than we would now.

Sure, you can TRY to hit it the other way but maybe 1% of the power hitters today would be as successful doing that and if you think HRs are down now the numbers would probably plummet even further if pull guys are suddenly trying to hit it the other way.

That being said, I do think there's a place for shifts in the game and as I stated earlier something like a mandatory amount of shifts per game would probably be the best solution.

That, and there are ways to beat it, players are just too stubborn to do it. I remember there were a few times that Anthony Rizzo bunted to the other side of the shift and could have walked to first base last year. I don't think shifts are a problem at all.
