There is a 3rd year opt out on the deal. This is huge, as we could get him for 3 good years, and let him walk when he's 33. I'm just glad we got our ace now, so we can focus on other things.

Okay, but you won't. There'll be 4 years, $120 million remaining, assuming the contract is evenly distributed. He won't get that 3 years from now.

If this contract plays out it's a $30m overpayment, probably.

Big contracts to pitchers. Not even once.

Don't love the signing or player, also don't hate the signing or player. Basically one big whatever. We'll see. *shrugs*

So contract is evenly distributed then?

Hated it before it happened, hating it while it happens, and will hold myself to hating it no matter what ends up happening. Will tie myself to this one, lol.

                  From Bob Nightengale:

David Price will earn $90 million the 1st three years of his contract_$30 million a year_when he then has an opt-out in his contract.#RedSox

The St. Louis Cardinals finished runner-up in the David Price sweepstakes. #STLCards

The #RedSox needed a decision by today by David Price so they didn't lose out on Greinke as well. Greinke was their back-up plan.

Zack Greinke now expected to sign with #Dodgers or #Giants by the end of the week on a 5- or 6-year deal. The #Dodgers still the favorites

                  From Jerry Crasnick:
                  David Price's annual salaries: 30, 30, 30, 31, 32, 32. 32. No deferred money in deal. Opt out after 3 yrs #redsox

He gets to opt out, not Boston. He's not going to leave $30M+ a year on the table that he'll get guaranteed. Not impossible, but I doubt he'll have many suitors in the mid-$30M range at 33 years old to make it worth opting out unless it's a disaster of a few years in Boston and he wants far away.

And this is why I'm glad Toronto passed on him. That is too much to spend on a guy in his 30's. I would say I'd like to see him get a postseason win, but I'd be lying.

Holy cow at the deal Price got...Bo McKinnis (Price's agent) FTW.

$30MM/year for 3 years then he can opt out? My goodness.

Is the opt out on David Price's part or the Sox? If it's the Sox than yeah they'll definitely cut the cord but if it's Price than they're pretty much stuck with him as I can't see him getting that kinda crazy money in 4 years time.

Wanna talk about high AAV? Wait until we see Greinke's deal.

Honestly, I'm excited about this deal for the sole fact we got the ace we needed, and still managed to keep all of our prospects, and our pick. Is it an overpay? more than likely. But we're the Red Sox, and John Henry is our owner. This will not hurt us.

Maybe the dumbest contract I've ever seen.
