Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Sounds like the Cubs were able to sign Baseball America's Number 1(Eloy Jimenez) and number 2(Gleyber Torres) top International Prospects today.
It's been a good day, boys.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Enjoyed Garza solidifying his trade value with another quality start last night. I only watched parts of the game, but I'm not sure he pitched as well as the results would indicate.
Early on in the game, he was leaving both his FB and CB up in the zone. The CB was especially egregious on the one that Moss roped into RF for a homer. While I think elevating the fastball against the A's was part of the gameplan, they put some good hacks on pitches, only to see the liners and flyballs die in the cavernous OF at o.co.
I also noticed that according to the in-house radar gun, Garza was only sitting 90-92 through the 1st 2 innings, but was in the 92-95 range from there on. It's probably nothing, but hopefully the velo isn't indicative of having a tough time getting loose or a minor injury.
It was certainly a good start, but I'm not sure why Dale Sveum said it's the best he's ever seen Garza. I guess b/c it's Dale Sveum (though kudos to him if it's to help drive up Garza's value).
I could see any number of teams wanting Garza with his recent performance. Rangers, Angels, Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, D'Backs, Rockies, and Nats all seem like fits. Maybe Cleveland too. Let's just hope Garza can stay off the DL for another month.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Javier Baez got promoted to AA tonight. He'll more than likely finish the year there.
Start 2014 in AAA if all things go well(though he'll probably start 2014 in AA and move up to AAA mid-summer is probably the most likely scenario)Comment

And the way Starlin Castro's been playing this year, we might have a wide open spot at SS for Javy Baez.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
I'm so torn with Starlin. He hasn't shown any real progression but, to be slightly less fair, he has at least been consistently average. I know he's got a lot of time, but there really hasn't been any progression. Part of me wishes they were closer so Garza would have a real reason to stick around, but if they were I would be seriously worried about Starlin Castro.
But, hey hey, at least we got a respectable (finally?) stretch sung today from Mr. Cornelison. And a 2 run, 2 homer day for Sori. And good for Travis Wood, I think, which is nice to see because that means Sean Marshall still contributing to the Cubs cause.Last edited by skywalkah; 07-06-2013, 08:57 PM.Comment

It would be a shame if he wastes all that talent, but wouldn't be the first. I have a feeling he'll need a change of scenery from Chicago if this keeps up.Comment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Guess it's the new fad of the week to dump on Starlin.
Guess a 23 year old isnt allowed to have a bad season.
Guess a kid who only played 2 months in AA isnt allowed to make mistake.
Oh well. I hope Baez, Soler, and Almora stay in the minors till like 2016. I would hate for them to be destroyed for breathing with the wrong lungComment

Re: The Friendly Confines: The Official Chicago Cubs Thread
Easy, guys, or I'm liable to strain something from all this eye rolling. I'm not sure what the 'last week' is exactly referencing - I'm sure I've missed a fair amount of particular criticism this year - but it's not like questions have just arisen this year. He's carried it over. I know there are more serious Starlin detractors, some of it I would even say is / was unfair, but I refuse to be a Starlin apologist, either. Like I said, I know he's young and I would like to see nothing else than him get it together. And I should think most fans are aware that their problems don't start with Castro. This guy is supposed to be a major part of this team going forward and he has consistent issues on defense, his hitting as been all over and he already has a reputation for checking out mentally. An instance here or there is one thing, but it has become a legitimate concern. I could live with the hitting if he provided gold glove caliber defense, but he doesn't.
I didn't call for a trade, just said I was worried. About as worried as I can be about a young, struggling player on a team that is facing another 100 loss season, anyways. And since when do we 'allow' players to have a bad season? Play that card enough and you end up with a team as bad as the Cu-
